Speed Hacks

Config> Emulation Setting > speed Hacks.
This is the thing to increase fps in some game (Specially God Of War 1 & 2). These have different effect on different games . Though in some games they may reduce performance. Discuss Here for any game , and there are not so many options there , cycle through them and see yourself what is the best settings for a particular game.
And if you have 2+ cores then don't forget to tick "MTVU (multi threaded micro VU1) ".

Ingame Setting to improve visuals
most game support progressive scan or progressive video mode. This greatly improve clarity and visuals.

Health benefits of Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Posted on 18:48 by Unknown
Health benefits of Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Ocimum sanctum (Holy basil), called Tulsi in India, is ubiquitous in Hindu tradition. Perhaps its role as a healing herb was instrumental in its "sacred" implication.Ocimum sanctum(Tulsi) is perhaps the most common and most revered of all household plants in India.Tulsi is an erect sweet -scented pubescent herb, 30-100cm in height, growing in abundance near cultivated field gardens and waste lands. Its leaves, seeds ands whole plant is useful.

Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum)
Rama Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum),
Vana Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum)
The two main morphotypes cultivated in India and Nepal are green-leaved (Sri or Lakshmi tulsi) and purple-leaved (Krishna tulsi).

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), known as”Queen of Herbs” is the most sacred herb of India. It has been revered in India for over 5000years, as a healing balm for body, mind and spirit, and is known to bestow an amazing number of health benefits. Commonly called sacred or holy basil, Tulsi is a principal herb of Ayurveda, the ancient traditional holistic health system of India. Although it is also known as Holy Basil, Tulsi is a different plant from the pesto variety of Basil (Ocimum basilicum).

Tulsi in Ayurveda
Ayurveda, in Sanskrit , means “knowledge of life”.Ayurveda specializes in natural herbal remedies designed to correct the imbalances in the body. Herbs lie at the very heart of Ayurvedic practice. Ayurvedic knowledge was born from the wisdom of the ancient rishis (sages and healers) and yogis (ascetics practicing yoga) of India, and was first passed on from healer to healer for untold generations before the earliest known texts were written around 5000 BC.

In the ancient ayurvedic texts, Tulsi holds the supreme place among the various medicinal herbs. Ayurveda went through a period of decline in India when the Western medical education became dominant during the era of the British rule. However, Ayurveda was recognised as an official form of medicine after India gained its independence in 1947. Today, Ayurveda has gained worldwide recognition.

Health benefits of Tulsi
Tulsi is renowned for its restorative powers and has several benefits:

Rich in antioxidants
Relieves stress
Bolsters immunity
Promotes a healthy metabolism and
Helps fight cough and colds

The unique chemistry of Tulsi is highly complex. Tulsi contains hundreds of beneficial compounds known as phytochemicals. Phyto-chemicals possess strong antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, adaptogenic and immune-enhancing properties that promote general health and support the body’s natural defence against stress and diseases.

Adaptogens
Adaptogens help the body adapt more efficiently to stress. Tulsi is one of the most effective adaptogens known to us,Tulsi can reduce the intensity and negative impact of the stress caused by mental tension, emotional difficulties, poor lifestyle habits, disease and infection, pollution and other factors.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants slow down the process of excess oxidation and protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. The cellular damage caused by free radicals can be responsible for causing and/or accelerating many diseases. Tulsi is rich in antioxidants and recommended for protection against excess oxidation.

Consumption of Tulsi
Tulsi can be consumed for good health either in the form of a capsule or as a herbal tea. Tulsi Tea can be prepared from fresh or dried leaves and served hot or cold. The three principal varieties of Tulsi, Rama, Krishna & Vana Tulsi have notably different aromas and flavours that may include hints of lemon, clove, anise and peppermint.

Tulsi can be prepared singly, as a blend of Tulsi varieties, or in combination with other herbs, spices, sweeteners, lemon or milk, for varying tastes and/or medicinal benefits. Naturalsweeteners may contribute to desirable effects of their own, unlike refined white sugar, which should be avoided.

International Recognition of Tulsi
“When I was first introduced to the sacred Tulsi, my first reaction, as a Western scientist, was disbelief. This herb sounds too good to be true. There seemed to be far more wide-ranging health benefits attributed to this plant than could be possible for a single agent. Yet, I realized that there must be a compelling reason why Tulsi has, for thousands of years, remained one of the most cherished of India’s sacred healing plants. Research offers impressive evidence that Tulsi’s vitality-enhancing properties, which support and enhance the body’s natural capacity to maintain a state of well-being, likely account for much of the impressively wide range of Tulsi’s traditional health-promoting uses. The industrialized West has, until very recently, tended to discard traditional nature-based, dietary and lifestyle approaches in favour of reliance on isolated compounds or synthetic drugs. However, the Western medical system has not been able to cope with the growing array of chronic, degenerative, environmental, lifestyle and stress-related physical and mental disorders that plague modern society. Tulsi is certain to emerge in the near future as a forerunner in the prevention and treatment of these pervasive modern illnesses.” – Dr. Ralph D. Miller, Former Director of Research, Canadian NationalDepartment of Health and Welfare.

Installing Ubuntu on USB Flash Drive

Posted on 09:04 by Unknown

Installing Ubuntu on USB Flash Drive
How to install a fully working linux specifically Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on USB Flash drive?.

Pro's of installing linux in a USB flash drive---

1. Linux is a great OS which can run on a variety of computers without the need of additional drivers unlike windows where you have to install drivers every time you install the OS. So you can say it's a very good OS having very good mobility. ( Now it is challenged by 'windows to go' feature of windows 8 which is going to be released very soon)

2. Linux requires very less hardware to run.

3. In linux, drivers do not conflict unlike windows so it's easy to use same linux installed on USB flash drive to work with different computer.

4. You can carry your personal and customized OS with you anywhere you want on a USB.

5. Various application can be installed on it like avast antivirus, Gparted etc.... which can rescue a broken system.

Con's of installing linux in a USB Flash drive--

1. As USB flash drives are slow than Hard Disks so the OS will run really slow. Mind it, it will be annoyingly slow.

2. Installing OS on USB may eat your USB Flash drive soon as Flash drives have limited write cycles.

3. Browsing may seem very slow as browsers waits to read cache from filesystem.

Now as you have seen the pro's and con's now we will proceed on installing linux.

If you have not downloaded ubuntu then download from www.ubuntu.org

After downloading burn the downloaded image on CD or DVD and boot from it.

You need at least 4 GB Flash Drive but 8 GB is recommended.

Here is step by step procedure-

1. Boot from live CD in ubuntu.

2. Insert the USB flash drive in USB Port.

3. On desktop double click on icon 'install ubuntu 12.04'

4. Click on continue and it will ask if you want to unmount the flash drive click on yes

5. Choose some thing else when ask to where to install ubuntu.

6. Next you will see your hard disk partitions and flash drive. Click on flash drive partition and then click on change. Change the partition type to ext4 and mount as to '/'. Click on ok to close the dialogue box.

7. In last you will see a drop down menu on where to install the the boot loader. Initially it will be showing sdc,sdd but on drop down you must select sdc1 or sdd1. Failing this step you may render your computer unbootable.

8. Then click on install and linux will be installed on your USB Flash drive.

Tips to find peace of mind

Tips to find peace of mind
Inner peace is a state of mind.  It is a time when your body and mind are quiet and relaxed.  Inner peace allows you to have a quietness of mind.  To achieve inner peace you must learn to control feelings of trouble from stress and complete exhaustion from what goes on around you every day in the world.

Inner peace allows your body and mind to help keep obstacles out of your way.  It allows you to feel serenity even at times when stressful situations arise.  Your brain power controls all of the power of your being and if you can control the way you respond to certain situations, you can achieve inner peace.

When inner peace is achieved you will find you are more creative, intuitive and have a quietness of mind that will allow you to achieve more in your life.  You have the ability within you right now to achieve inner peace.  In this report we will discuss several ways for you to arrive at your own inner peace.

When you feel yourself becoming stressed why not try some of the following relaxation techniques to calm your mind and body.

1.  Take a relaxing drive to the country.  When you find a beautiful place pullover turn on some soothing music in your car and sit back and listen to the music. You can also take a folding chair with you so you can sit outside the car with the windows rolled down to hear the music.  Take a leisurely walk to the countryside and think only good thoughts.  Think of happy memories or times when you felt inner peace.

2.  Sit in a room by yourself in a comfortable chair.  If you have a fountain turn it on and listen to the water flow and focus on watching it.  If you do not have a fountain turn on soothing music and focus on a picture of a beautiful ocean or mountain scene and imagine yourself being there.

3.  Turn on some soothing music and lay flat on your back on your bed with your arms lying flat out to your side.  Bring your arms straight up towards the ceiling and touch your fingertips together.

Now start moving your arms around as if they are floating.  As you move your arms around the floating, floating, picture yourself floating in the clouds and dancing around.  Repeat to yourself, I am relaxed and I am happy.  Do this for 10 to 20 minutes every day.

4.  Take a warm soothing bath.  Light plenty of aromatherapy candles turn on some soothing music and just lay back and relax.

5.  You can lie on your back on your bed and try to clear your mind of any thoughts.  A good method to clear your thoughts is to count from 600 backwards by fours.  By doing this your mind can not think of other thoughts.  Start at 600, 596, 592, 588, 584 etc..  Continue to do this until you get to zero.

Top Digital Cameras In India

Top Digital Cameras In India

No matter what smartphone you take pictures with, and no matter how much the world advances, there’s nothing that compares to taking pictures from a dedicated (digital) camera. Like rest of the techno world, digi-cam sellers are at a neck-to-neck level competition, and this particular post is about those top cameras that leave the rest behind, based on factors such as light weight, easy on the pocket, high pixel resolution, etc.

1. Canon IXUS 120 IS
For all those obsessed with clicking tons of photos and uploading them over social networking sites, this sleek and simple-to-use digi-cam is the way to go for you! The IXUS 120 is easy to work with, even for the ones with large hands. Not to forget, the small yet apt size makes it a perfect fit in your pocket. And talking about pocket, this digi-cam comes at a reasonable price of Rs. 9780.

It’s known for its HD camera quality, holds true for even the videos, and is HDMI-out. The 12 megapixel camera has a 2.7-inch LCD display and a 4x optical zoom. There are three modes to choose from, and while taking videos, the resolution is capable of going up to 720 p. However, you won’t be able to optically zoom your device while recording a video.

Smooth and stern, the device captures good snaps and even if you don’t know what a certain feature in the device does, the revamped menu will help you through. Though you will get mixed reviews for the camera in terms of performance, there’s a reason- the camera is still one of those point-and-shoot kinds, while many others have advanced well ahead.

2. Sony CyberShot W320
One of the most popular and classiest cameras in market, this Sony production has a bucketful of features to impress its users. It is a 14.1 megapixel camera with a 2.7-inch LCD display, giving crisp and crystal clear images. Do take note of the impressive zoom technology of up to 18x. Another smart feature is the way shakes are handled- with two simultaneous snaps taken and then combined together by the device to automatically produce a better, stabilized picture.

There are numerous shooting modes to select from, 8 potential face detections per shot, full metering available, proper self-timer and more, to multiply the camera’s functionalities and value. Not just these fancy features, the stylish body and slim design make the camera easy-to-handle, and are very popular amongst the photo-freaks who love capturing every moment, just at the drop of a hat! This Sony digi-cam comes for the price of Rs. 8990, and seems to offer much more than it asks for. A must have!

3. Nikon L-Series COOLPIX S400
Nikon’s latest L series which took over the previous S-series is fully loaded this season, and this COOLPIX digi-cam comes with the new 3.0-inch touch-panel containing high resolution and special 460,000-dot LCD screen, all giving it amazing color clarity along with other top-class touch features such as Touch Shatter, Subject Trakking and more, all for you to explore once you lay hands on this gadget. The 12-megapixel device comes with 4x wide-angled zooming which enhances the picture quality, ISO sensitivity of the 3200 range, HD videos capable of resolutions up to 720 p, scene selector (auto), etc.

The camera comes in many vivid and attractive colors to suit every individual’s preference- black, pink, bronze, gloss champagne and red. The model has an estimated weight of 131 grams, optical and digital zooming upto 4x, full metering, and 190 shots availability. You can run this device on both the Mac and MS windows OS. The format for images supports jpeg, only. All in all, the bottom line to the gadget is an effective model in the market, at the cost of Rs. 9950.

4. Samsung PL100
If you’re unwilling to compromise on looks, this is the best for you in terms of Indian digi-cams, coming with many good functionalities and undoubtedly, a sharp picture quality. The PL100 comes at the price Rs. 9630, a few hundred more or less, and seems completely fair with the results it brings.

It’s loaded with a 12.1 megapixel lens, has HD video recording that goes up to 720 p resolutions, has good face detection, red eye reduction and self-timing features. The camera has only 3x optical and digital zooming though, a notch down from the other cameras in market. Under the range of Rs. 10,000, this is probably one of the best buys around. Take note of the unique dual-display feature which helps perfect your self-portraits and what not!

5. Panasonic Lumix DMC FH3
Panasonic’s going the extra mile to come up with fine-looking, metallic-bodied digi-cams at your doorstep. The FH3 is a point-and-shoot featuring device with ample amount of features to make its price of Rs. 10,000 worth it! To begin with, the camera has a high quality lens of 14.1 megapixels, refining every image and giving you striking results. The digital zooming goes up to 4x, and the optical zooming is one more, at 5x.

An advantage with this camera is that you get as many as 310 shots or a battery life of 2 hours at a go, with obvious rechargeable Li-Ion batteries. The camera supports SD cards to expand the memory storage, another one of its plus points. Like most other digi-cams in market, the Lumix FH3 has the necessary features like proper face detecting, image stabilization, reduction of red-eye and a self-timer. There are plenty of modes and small adjustments to give you great images, even in night-mode.

There are tons of cameras and lots of competition to make you get off track while choosing the right one for you. Hope this little compilation eased your task!

BEST Free Firewalls

Posted on 18:42 by Unknown

BEST Free Firewalls
Why do I need a firewall ?

I am using a paid / Pro antivirus and it is the best. Do I still need a firewall ?  Yes, because with antivirus alone,

1. Hackers can get through open ports of your computer.

2. Any one can do a port scan and find out security loop holes to get into your computer.

3. Hackers may show themselves as legitimate source accessing your computer in the network activity list.

4. After finding ways to get into your PC, hackers will install malware which are able to send your sensitve like account no.s, passwords, personal email ID etc. You can imagine how they use your credit card details once it reach them.Ya, I know all these. I have Windows Firewall, why should I bother installing a separate firewall ?

It is true that Microsoft made a smart move by adding a firewall to its latest version of Windows. But it is an inbound protection firewall. It will help you only from points 1 & 2. Hackers can still find a way to get into your system. And Windows Firewall does not check outgoing connection. If a malware gets into your PC (not necessarily through net, USB for eg.) it can send data to hackers and Windows Firewall will be a silent spectator. If you use a limited bandwidth plan (say BSNL Home 500C), most of your bandwidth will be eaten by malware and you may get a huge bill for excess usage. You are making me nervous. Ok tell me more.Simple, get a two way firewall from any trusted source. They are mainly classified into two

1. Basic Firewall

2. Firewalls with Strong HIPS Protection (What is HIPS ?

http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/g/hips.htm

1. Basic Firewall

The best possible example for a Basic firewall is Zonealarm free. It is best suited for users with beginner or average experience on computers. Zonealarm free effectively safe guards your PC from inbound and outbound threats. You can add exceptions for programs like utorrent and service like file and printer sharing. Though it is very silent and ask very less user intervention, you can get a pop up alert whenever a program is try to access net from your PC. You can allow or deny this request by a single click. If you do not wish to get pop ups for that program, you can choose to remember the option (which you can modify later if necessary).

Best Free Firewall Software for Download: Personal Firewall by ZoneAlarm

2. Firewalls with Strong HIPS Protection

It is for user who think they are capable of handling settings of a firewall.Though you can make it silent like a basic firewall, Pro users prefer to handle the request and make sure that they are safe. Let us discuss a few extremely efficient Pro active firewalls.

a. Comodo Firewall
Comodo Firewall is considered as the best available firewall at the moment. According to independent reviews, it is more efficient than most paid firewalls. It has Defense + feature which monitors programs and make sure that they are not compromised. It consist of a memory firewall which protects you from buffer overflow attacks and a light sandbox. Users can choose the following settings Firewall Only, and Firewall with Optimum or Maximum Proactive Defense. The later being the best. You can use Clean PC mode which declares all programs in PC as safe (do not choose if you are not sure if your PC is clean or not). Even if you choose Clean PC mode there will be "my protected registry keys" and "my protected COM interfaces" which adds protection to your PC.

b. Online Armor Free

If you want an alternative to Comodo, Online Armor free can do it for you. It has a HIPS feature enabled " Program guard " to keep you safe. You can use Run safer feature and set high risk application such as browsers, download managers, messenger clients etc (which are known to be easy entry for malware to your PC) under a limited account. The keylogger detection is one of the fine features which other free firewalls include in their pro version. If you are paranoid user, Online Armor Free can be set to give pop ups for every suspicious action on which you can make a decision.

Positive Thinking

Posted on 08:41 by Unknown

Positive Thinking

Deep down we all know that positive thinking results in a positive and more fulfilling life. Positive people are happy people. They manage stress better, they have better relationships, they are healthier, and they are happier and often more successful in their careers. This isn’t to say that the only way you’re going to be healthy, happy, and wise is to put a smile on your face.
Every positive person has bad days.  Every positive person has struggles and days where it is difficult to smile and look on the bright side.  The difference between the eternal optimist and the rest of us is that they have developed the ability to refocus their thoughts.  They have practiced the art of positive thinking.

1. The power of awareness
The first key to making changes is to become aware. As you create your inner power statement, you will be literally forming a new positive thought into both your conscious and eventually into your subconscious mind where you will no longer have to think about the thought.

2. Speak to your brain in language it understands.  Create a new statement written in the positive.  Ex)  I am brilliant (positive tense) versus I am not stupid. (negative tense)

3. Create your statement in the present tense.  If you create your statement in the future tense, your brain will put your thought into the “I will get to this later".

4. Make it a powerful statement.  Create a positive statement as powerful as your negative statement. A common example is people calling themselves “fat”. People often have the definition of fat connected to words like lazy, disgusting, unattractive, and unlovable. This makes the word “fat” an extremely emotionally charged and well connected to many pathways. This means it will be more difficult to change and will need a statement powerful enough to combat all these other pathways. It is important to dig deep and understand what is connected to your statements.  As you understand the deep force attached to the statement, you can then manage the issue at the root and be more successful at clearing out the negative.  A powerful statement to combat fat may be “I am a healthy energetic and lovable and worthy of all that my heart desires.

5. Create a clear definition of what you statement means. Create a specific definition that will allow your brain to know what to look for in your environment to make your positive statement true.  For example, if I were to say that I am brilliant, I need to write out my definition of brilliance.  My definition of brilliance is that everyone has inner strengths and gifts inside them to offer to the world.  One of the ways that I am brilliant is by being a good listener. Being a good listener is important as I am able to  listen to someone’s heart and respect them where they are on their journey.  Having someone to listen to you supports another’s personal growth and lets them feel as if they are not alone.

6. Set an intention and look for evidence.  When you decide 100% that you are going to make a change, your brain will find new possibilities and opportunities to ensure your achieve your goal.  Henry Ford said it best when he said, “If you think you can or you think you can’t you are right”.  Once you have set the intention, start looking for evidence to prove yourself right.  Once I intended to believe that I am brilliant for being a good listener, I would listen for anyone who thanked me for being a good listener as evidence.  I would then keep a journal of the ways that I am brilliant.

7.  Get a live your power buddy - Studies show that having someone support you while you are making a change can increase your success .

8. Repeat and combine your affirmations.  By repeating an affirmation over and over again and combining it with action, it becomes embedded in the subconscious mind, and eventually becomes your reality.

9. People that laugh live longer.  Laugh every day.  What makes you laugh?  Do you have a favorite television show?  Cartoon?  Pets and children can be extremely funny, actually many adults can be too without intending to.  People watch and look for the humor in life. When you do this too, it can save your life.

10. Listen to positive music
The effect of classical music has been studied on infants.  Scientists theorize that the music triggers brain development.  Music has a profound power on our brain, emotions, attitude and outlook.  Music can trigger a memory.  You favorite song can place a smile on your face and a song that you dislike can cause you to groan and cover your ears. Music is powerful.

A Basic Guide To Internet

Posted on 21:05 by Unknown
A Basic Guide To Internet

The Internet is a computer network made up of thousands of networks worldwide. No one knows exactly how many computers are connected to the Internet. It is certain, however, that these number in the millions.

No one is in charge of the Internet. There are organizations which develop technical aspects of this network and set standards for creating applications on it, but no governing body is in control. The Internet backbone, through which Internet traffic flows, is owned by private companies.

All computers on the Internet communicate with one another using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol suite, abbreviated to TCP/IP. Computers on the Internet use a client/server architecture. This means that the remote server machine provides files and services to the user's local client machine. Software can be installed on a client computer to take advantage of the latest access technology.

An Internet user has access to a wide variety of services: electronic mail, file transfer, vast information resources, interest group membership, interactive collaboration, multimedia displays, real-time broadcasting, shopping opportunities, breaking news, and much more.

The Internet consists primarily of a variety of access protocols. Many of these protocols feature programs that allow users to search for and retrieve material made available by the protocol.

COMPONENTS OF THE INTERNET

WORLD WIDE WEB
The World Wide Web (abbreviated as the Web or WWW) is a system of Internet servers that supports hypertext to access several Internet protocols on a single interface. Almost every protocol type available on the Internet is accessible on the Web. This includes e-mail, FTP, Telnet, and Usenet News. In addition to these, the World Wide Web has its own protocol: HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. These protocols will be explained later in this document.

The World Wide Web provides a single interface for accessing all these protocols. This creates a convenient and user-friendly environment. It is no longer necessary to be conversant in these protocols within separate, command-level environments. The Web gathers together these protocols into a single system. Because of this feature, and because of the Web's ability to work with multimedia and advanced programming languages, the Web is the fastest-growing component of the Internet.

The operation of the Web relies primarily on hypertext as its means of information retrieval. HyperText is a document containing words that connect to other documents. These words are called links and are selectable by the user. A single hypertext document can contain links to many documents. In the context of the Web, words or graphics may serve as links to other documents, images, video, and sound. Links may or may not follow a logical path, as each connection is programmed by the creator of the source document. Overall, the Web contains a complex virtual web of connections among a vast number of documents, graphics, videos, and sounds.

Producing hypertext for the Web is accomplished by creating documents with a language called HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. With HTML, tags are placed within the text to accomplish document formatting, visual features such as font size, italics and bold, and the creation of hypertext links. Graphics and multimedia may also be incorporated into an HTML document. HTML is an evolving language, with new tags being added as each upgrade of the language is developed and released. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), led by Web founder Tim Berners-Lee, coordinates the efforts of standardizing HTML. The W3C now calls the language XHTML and considers it to be an application of the XML language standard.

The World Wide Web consists of files, called pages or home pages, containing links to documents and resources throughout the Internet. The Web provides a vast array of experiences including multimedia presentations, real-time collaboration, interactive pages, radio and television broadcasts, and the automatic "push" of information to a client computer. Programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic, Cold Fusion and XML are extending the capabilities of the Web. A growing amount of information on the Web is served dynamically from content stored in databases. The Web is therefore not a fixed entity, but one that is in a constant state of development and flux.

For more complete information about the World Wide Web, see Understanding The World Wide Web.

E-MAIL
Electronic mail, or e-mail, allows computer users locally and worldwide to exchange messages. Each user of e-mail has a mailbox address to which messages are sent. Messages sent through e-mail can arrive within a matter of seconds.A powerful aspect of e-mail is the option to send electronic files to a person's e-mail address. Non-ASCII files, known as binary files, may be attached to e-mail messages.

These files are referred to as MIME attachments.MIME stands for Multimedia Internet Mail Extension, and was developed to help e-mail software handle a variety of file types. For example, a document created in Microsoft Word can be attached to an e-mail message and retrieved by the recipient with the appropriate e-mail program. Many e-mail programs, including Eudora, Netscape Messenger,Yahoo Messenger and Microsoft Outlook, offer the ability to read files written in HTML, which is itself a MIME type.

TELNET
Telnet is a program that allows you to log into computers on the Internet and use online databases, library catalogs, chat services, and more. There are no graphics in Telnet sessions, just text. To Telnet to a computer, you must know its address. This can consist of words (locis.loc.gov) or numbers (140.147.254.3). Some services require you to connect to a specific port on the remote computer. In this case, type the port number after the Internet address. Example: telnet nri.reston.va.us 185.

Telnet is available on the World Wide Web. Probably the most common Web-based resources available through Telnet have been library catalogs, though most catalogs have since migrated to the Web. A link to a Telnet resource may look like any other link, but it will launch a Telnet session to make the connection. A Telnet program must be installed on your local computer and configured to your Web browser in order to work. With the increasing popularity of the Web, Telnet has become less frequently used as a means of access to information on the Internet.

FTP
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is both a program and the method used to transfer files between computers. Anonymous FTP is an option that allows users to transfer files from thousands of host computers on the Internet to their personal computer account. FTP sites contain books, articles, software, games, images, sounds, multimedia, course work, data sets, and more.

If your computer is directly connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable, you can use one of several PC software programs, such as WS_FTP for Windows, to conduct a file transfer.

FTP transfers can be performed on the World Wide Web without the need for special software. In this case, the Web browser will suffice. Whenever you download software from a Web site to your local machine, you are using FTP. You can also retrieve FTP files via search engines such as FtpFind, located at /http://www.ftpfind.com/. This option is easiest because you do not need to know FTP program commands.

E-MAIL DISCUSSION GROUPS
One of the benefits of the Internet is the opportunity it offers to people worldwide to communicate via e-mail. The Internet is home to a large community of individuals who carry out active discussions organized around topic-oriented forums distributed by e-mail. These are administered by software programs. Probably the most common program is the listserv.

A great variety of topics are covered by listservs, many of them academic in nature. When you subscribe to a listserv, messages from other subscribers are automatically sent to your electronic mailbox. You subscribe to a listserv by sending an e-mail message to a computer program called a listserver. Listservers are located on computer networks throughout the world. This program handles subscription information and distributes messages to and from subscribers. You must have a e-mail account to participate in a listserv discussion group. Visit Tile.net at /http://tile.net/ to see an example of a site that offers a searchablecollection of e-mail discussion groups.Majordomo and Listproc are two other programs that administer e-mail discussion groups. The commands for subscribing to and managing your list memberships are similar to those of listserv.

USENET NEWS
Usenet News is a global electronic bulletin board system in which millions of computer users exchange information on a vast range of topics. The major difference between Usenet News and e-mail discussion groups is the fact that Usenet messages are stored on central computers, and users must connect to these computers to read or download the messages posted to these groups. This is distinct from e-mail distribution, in which messages arrive in the electronic mailboxes of each list member.

Usenet itself is a set of machines that exchanges messages, or articles, from Usenet discussion forums, called newsgroups. Usenet administrators control their own sites, and decide which (if any) newsgroups to sponsor and which remote newsgroups to allow into the system.

There are thousands of Usenet newsgroups in existence. While many are academic in nature, numerous newsgroups are organized around recreational topics. Much serious computer-related work takes place in Usenet discussions. A small number of e-mail discussion groups also exist as Usenet newsgroups. The Usenet newsfeed can be read by a variety of newsreader software programs. For example, the Netscape suite comes with a newsreader program called Messenger.

Newsreaders are also available as standalone products.

FAQ, RFC, FYI
FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. These are periodic postings to Usenet newsgroups that contain a wealth of information related to the topic of the newsgroup.

Many FAQs are quite extensive. FAQs are available by subscribing to individual Usenet newsgroups. A Web-based collection of FAQ resources has been collected by The Internet

FAQ Consortium and is available at  http://www.faqs.org

RFC stands for Request for Comments. These are documents created by and distributed to the Internet community to help define the nuts and bolts of the Internet. They contain both technical specifications and general information.

FYI stands for For Your Information. These notes are a subset of RFCs and contain information of interest to new Internet users.

Links to indexes of all three of these information resources are available on the University Libraries Web site at /http://library.albany.edu/reference/faqs.html.

CHAT & INSTANT MESSENGING
Chat programs allow users on the Internet to communicate with each other by typing in real time. They are sometimes included as a feature of a Web site, where users can log into the "chat room" to exchange comments and information about the topics addressed on the site. Chat may take other, more wide-ranging forms. For example, America Online is well known for sponsoring a number of topical chat rooms.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a service through which participants can communicate to each other on hundreds of channels. These channels are usually based on specific topics. While many topics are frivolous, substantive conversations are also taking place. To access IRC, you must use an IRC software program.

A variation of chat is the phenomenon of instant messenging. With instant messenging, a user on the Web can contact another user currently logged in and type a conversation. Most famous is America Online's Instant Messenger. ICQ, MSN and Yahoo are other commonly-used chat programs.

Other types of real-time communication are addressed in the tutorial Understanding the World Wide Web.

MUD/MUSH/MOO/MUCK/DUM/MUSE
MUD stands for Multi User Dimension. MUDs, and their variations listed above, are multi-user virtual reality games based on simulated worlds. Traditionally text based, graphical MUDs now exist. There are MUDs of all kinds on the Internet, and many can be joined free of charge.

FUN FACTS: FAMOUS SCORPIO PEOPLE

Posted on 22:50 by Unknown

FUN FACTS: FAMOUS SCORPIO PEOPLE
Scorpio, being a water sign, is by nature intuitive and deep and possesses great sensitivity and emotionalism. Issues of trust present a great problem for many Scorpios so they are not always open and do not communicate well in relationships. There is a tendency to be guarded, and jealousy can at times rear its ugly head. Sex is merely a vehicle for deeper passions of which they are very capable.
Their emotions run deep. Scorpios have an incredible ability to regenerate their lives after any form of adversity and this allows for truly strong individuals. They make excellent researchers and psychiatrists. In fact, they do well in any occupation where they can use their probing abilities.

1) Scorpios are intelligent and can be great business people. That's why they usually succeed what they do. Bill Gates is one!

2) Scorpios are artistic and often eccentric. Icelander and famous musician Bjork is a Scorpio.

3) Another icon under the Scorpio sign who will be remembered (for as long as fashion exists) is Calvin Klein!

4) Hot MILF anyone? Demi Moore, star of GI Jane and Striptease is one hot Scorpio.
5)You know how Ally McBeal was so career oriented and confident and extremely sexual in the TV series? She's probably the same in person. Calista Flockhart is a Scorpio.

6) Still not convinced of their artistic capabilities? Another famous and immortal names in the world of the arts is Pablo Picasso. He will forever be remembered for his surreal paintings, drawings, sculptures and his really long name. Pablo Picasso was born Pablo Diego Jos Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santsima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso.

7) The only Scorpio of the band Scorpion is Matthias Jabs  not that it had anything to do with the bands name!

8) One of the most seriously misunderstood and mysterious Scorpios of all time is Charles Manson! Go figure.

9) Another world famous Hollywood A-Lister? Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm beginning to think Scorpios are a real good catch.
10) And speaking of hot and talented A-Listers you can add The Phantom of The Opera and 300 star Gerard Butler. A great voice and hot ass is always a nice addition to the positive Scorpio traits.

11) Canadian musician, songwriter and painter who was very famous for the Big Yellow Taxi song was Joni Mitchell. She was born November 7, 1943.

12) Scorpios are regarded as authoritative and even shrewd. One of the most famous country leaders who possesses these qualities was Indira Gandhi, the worlds first female prime minister to hold office and remain longest in term as of 2011.
13) If you don't agree that Scorpios are very sexual people she might actually get to convince you 100%. American model and 1993's Playboy Playmate of the year Jenny McCarthy was born November 1, 1972.

14) Another great leader to be remembered in the history not only of the United States but the while world was Theodore Roosevelt.
15)My Best Friend's Wedding and Eat, Pray, Love star Julia Roberts is a Scorpio born on October 28, 1967.
16) Multiple Grammy Awardee K.D.Lang was born November 2, 1961 and is not only famous for her music but also for raising HIV and gay rights awareness. Scorpios can change lives.

17) Former US first lady Laura Bush was born November 4, 1946.

18) It's not only their personality that causes mystery, world famous novelist Neil Gaiman has enchanted kids and the kids at heart with his critically acclaimed works Coraline and Stardust, to name a few.

19)Other talented Hollywood celebrities that share the Scorpio sign include, Owen Wilson, Piper Perabo, Ricky Martin, David Schwimmer, Ryan Gosling, Scarlett Johansson and Winona Ryder.
20)Famous 1800s English novelist George Elliot was actually a woman who used a male pen name for her works to be taken seriously during the time when females were only good for writing romance novels. Gotta admire that!

Some more Famous Scorpios:
Björk, John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jodie Foster, Ryan Gosling, Grace Kelly, Ang Lee, Diego Maradonna, Joaquin Pheonix, Ryan Reynolds, Tara Reid, Brittanny Murphy ,Anne hathaway, Gerard Butler, Matthew McConaughey.

Shot Guns

Posted on 21:57 by Unknown

Shot Guns
When buying a shotgun, there are many different factors to consider. Gauge, size, type and brand to name a few, but one of the first things you must consider is what type of shotgun is best for you. There are four basic types of shotguns, all of which accomplish the same goal which I have briefly described below. Each type has its own pros and cons; you must carefully consider each type and what the gun will be used for.

A single shot shotgun is a gun that only holds one shell at a time. They are typically the least expensive type of shotgun available, mainly because you only get one shot before you have to open the breach and reload a new shell before it may be fired again. These types of guns are great for the inexperienced or youth as they tend to be safer with only one shot at a time.

Pump-action shotguns are the most common type of shotgun, they are reliable and typically on the lower end of the price range. These guns hold multiple shells and require you to pump the for end after each shot to eject the spent shell and load a new shell.

Auto-Loader -These guns are also known as semi-automatics and use a variety of different automatic systems to eject the spent shell and load a new shell with only the pull of the trigger. This type of shotgun also tends to have less recoil (about 30% less) due to the automatic cycling action absorbing some of the recoil. Automatic loading shotguns generally are more expensive than pump-action and depending on the quality of the gun, they can be as reliable as a pump-action.

Double Barrel - A double barrel shotgun is a gun that only holds two shells at a time and can be found in one of two styles; over/under or side-by-side. One of the main advantages of a double barrel is that a hunter or shooter can insert a different choke into each barrel; this increases the chance of a successful shot which can depend on the distance of the target. Due to reliability and usability, double barrel shotguns tend to be the most expensive of all the shotgun types. Magazine fed guns need about 3 extra inches of barrel to allow for the action cycling of the gun which makes the barrel of a double barrel shotgun shorter and lighter. These guns are usually well balanced and swing effortlessly with a natural feel to them. Without a place to hide, a shell can be seen at a quick glance, making this gun type one of the safest. Due to the fact that the barrel is not connected to the firing action, double barrel guns may be broken open when you’re carrying your gun around camp or to your hunting spot without the chance of an accidental discharge.

Antivirus Companies and their Hometown

The age of the Internet had brought about the proliferation of viruses, their method of infection, and means of distribution. Subsequently, antivirus companies were forced to combat this threat. They began to release new versions of their products at a much faster rate and began to update the signature database of their products via the Internet.

In today’s market, there is a wide variety of antivirus products, some that are freeware, and others that cost money. Studies show that the majority of people prefer and settle for freeware antivirus. Furthermore, the popularity of any given antivirus product does not reflect its effectiveness. The below diagram illustrates the popularly of the major antivirus products with the largest market share. Though as noted, the percentages in this diagram do not necessarily reflect given products capabilities.

Recommended processes to prevent virus problems:

1. Always run the Corporate standard, supported anti-virus software is available from the corporate download site. Download and run the current version; download and install anti-virus software updates as they become available.

2. NEVER open any files or macros attached to an email from an unknown, suspicious or untrustworthy source. Delete these attachments immediately, then "double delete" them by emptying your Trash.

3. Delete spam, chain, and other junk email without forwarding, in with <Company Name>'s Acceptable Use Policy.

4. Never download files from unknown or suspicious sources.

5. Avoid direct disk sharing with read/write access unless there is absolutely a business requirement to do so.

6. Always scan a floppy diskette from an unknown source for viruses before using it.

7. Back-up critical data and system configurations on a regular basis and store the data in a safe place.

8. If lab testing conflicts with anti-virus software, run the anti-virus utility to ensure a clean machine, disable the software, then run the lab test. After the lab test, enable the anti-virus software. When the anti-virus software is disabled, do not run any applications that could transfer a virus, e.g., email or file sharing.

9. New viruses are discovered almost every day. Periodically check the Lab Anti-Virus Policy and this Recommended Processes list for updates.

10 Reasons to switch to Windows 7

Posted on 00:01 by Unknown
10 Reasons to switch to Windows 7
Some people still use Windows XP - even if it's 10 years old now. The support will end in April 2014 but there are 7 main reasons why not to use it these days.

#1. Security
Windows 7 is way more secure than Windows XP; it has two completely different user profiles; normal user and admin. In Windows XP you have this as well but as a normal user you will have a lot of trouble running your system without any problems. Another thing that is missing in WinXP is Data Execution Prevention and the Address Layout Randomization.

#2. Speed
Windows XP and Windows Vista need a lot of time to start up. Windows 7 does this in a faster way plus gives you a lot of abbreviations while using it, like running a program through the search box in the startmenu.

#3. Hardware Support
Latest hardware needs the latest operating system. Some people think it was this way back in the 90s when you had to buy Windows 98 to get USB support (didn't really work in Win95C) just as an example. Nowadays it's the same situation: If you want to use SSD's, HDD's >2TB or 'just' a lot of RAM, then you need Windows 7. Windows XP can't handle all of this at all.

#4. Software Support
Sure, most programs still work with Windows XP, but some features require Windows 7. Even Microsoft stopped shipping their Internet Explorer or Media Player for it. Same will happen with other software developers as well.

#5. Stability
How many bluescreens did we have with WinXP? Maybe 10? Maybe 100? Did you ever see one running Windows 7? No? It's because Windows 7 uses a newer kernel than Windows XP; this one can handle driver crashes and other stuff.

#6. Comfort
Aero. It doesn't just look nice; no, it even makes EVERYTHING easier like handling window management with Aero Snap. The Superbar brings a ton of new features that make the OS feel the round way.

#7. Configuration
Did you notice that no-one defrags his HDD anymore? No? It's because Windows 7 does this job in the background so that you don't need to care for that anymore. Now you might say: Ouuh, defragging, so outdated. Ok, now take a search on your Windows XP machine and see how long it takes to find some files or programs.

#8. Greater stability
Unlike Windows Vista, most hardware and software is readily compatible with Windows 7 and will work right out of the box, with no need to download and install additional drivers. Happily, in instances where necessary, locating and adding these updates to your PC proves a relatively painless procedure.

#9. Upgrading from XP is easy
If you are one of those who switched back to XP after your terrible encounter with Vista, and aren’t sure about upgrading to Win 7, then here’s the good news - it has been built in a way that it supports most of the apps supported by XP and so upgrading isn’t that difficult.

#10. XP Mode and Virtualization.
All of your applications should run fine on Windows 7 if they run on XP. 7 also has built-in virtualization with Virtual PC if you purchase the Ultimate or the Enterprise version.

Windows 8 Security Tips

Posted on 19:52 by Unknown

Windows 8 Security Tips
Windows 8 is being touted as a major change in the way that people will use and interact with their PCs, tablets and other devices. Much of the change is evident in the user interface, with its tiled appearance and app-friendly setup. But there are some important changes behind the scenes, as well, and many of them are designed to make life online safer and more secure for users.

Here’s eleven quick tips on how to keep Windows 8 running securely:

1. Turn on Family Safety. This feature allows parents to set up separate accounts for each child and have the option of receiving reports on the kids’ activities online. Parents can create lists of allowed sites and will be able to see which sites their kids visited, how much time they spent on them and which blocked sites they tried to visit, as well

2. Use automatic updates. This should be one of the first things you do on any new Windows PC. Using automatic updates removes the worry from the patching process and instructs Windows to download and install new updates as soon as they’re available.

3. Be smart. Microsoft has added a new anti-phishing feature to Windows 8 called SmartScreen, which helps protect users against fraudulent sites or malicious apps. It checks downloaded apps against a reputation database to see whether they’re known to be malicious. The feature also is deployed in Internet Explorer and warn users when they hit a reported attack site. Heed these warnings.

4. Encrypt your data. Math is hard, even for attackers with lots of time and powerful computers at their disposal. So take advantage of the beauty of massive integers and use the built-in data encryption feature in Windows 8, known as BitLocker. Once enabled, this system will automatically encrypt any files or other data stored on designated drives, making it useless to hackers.

5. Run antimalware software. This should go without saying at this point, but you need to run antimalware software on all of your computers. Windows 8 includes an application called Windows Defender that provides basic protection against viruses and other threats, but you also should install a premium antimalware product, such as Kaspersky Internet Security or Kaspersky PURE, that is designed to work with Windows 8. This will defend your PC against the broadest set of threats, including unknown malware.

6. Use picture passwords. Typical alphanumeric passwords are easy prey for attackers, so Microsoft has added a new feature that allows users to select an image from their photo library and then perform several gestures on the photo, either with a mouse or on the touchscreen. Those gestures on the photo become part of the authentication method and are required to be performed in the same way on the same photo in order to unlock the machine.

7. Turn on the firewall. Windows includes a built-in firewall, which helps prevent malicious traffic from getting through to your PC. It’s enabled by default, so unless you have a 'very' good reason, leave it alone.

8. Remove Java. There’s no good reason to have Java installed on your PC these days, and there’s a very good reason not to have it: attackers target Java more than almost any other software. Java vulnerabilities are plentiful and easily exploitable and so hackers love to use them in attacks. If Java is installed on your Windows 8 PC, disable it or remove it.

9. Use the Windows 8 style UI version of Internet Explorer
By default, plugins are disabled, blocking a major target for exploit kits and Blackhole attacks.

10. Disable hard drive encryption hibernation
Hard drive encryption is a cornerstone of data protection. If possible, disable the hibernation option in Windows 8 through group policy, as it doesn’t always work well with encryption.

11. Treat Windows RT (ARM) devices like any other mobile devices
Make sure you impose the same security levels on Windows RT devices as all others. You should have the ability to control, track, remote wipe and encrypt them.

You should still run a full security suite for superior filtering and centralized management and reporting. While Microsoft has included a minimalist antivirus and firewall, most organizations will still require commercial-grade security.  And of course, all the old security rules also apply with Window 8. It’s still a bad idea to allow automatic log-on. Above all, remain vigilant.
