35 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep

Posted on 10:31 by Unknown
35 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep
Source:  http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.en
Quality sleep is vital for the mind and body. It is even key to managing - another common diabetes-related issue. The less you sleep, the more tempting it is to eat the comfort foods that poorly help you compensate for that lack of rest and necessary energy.
Sleep plays a critical role in immune function, metabolism, memory/attention span, learning, and other important mind and body functions. It also impacts a person's weight, lowers incidents of depression, and it is one easy way to get stress relief.

1. Try to go to bed at the same time every evening and get up at the same time every morning. This will help your body to work out a healthy sleep routine.

2. A person should only stay in bed equal to the number of hours of sleep they are achieving per night (for example, if you are getting six hours of sleep per night you should plan bedtime and wake time as six hours apart).  Many insomniacs spend far too much time in bed, attempting to "squeeze" out a few more minutes of sleep.

3. If you have difficulty getting to sleep within 20 minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing and distracting.  For many people this is reading.  Do not do housework, bills, work, or anything that is too stimulating within two hours of bedtime or during a nighttime awakening.

4. Although some people's insomnia is helped by a nap at midday, for most, it will interfere with falling asleep that night.

5. Avoid alcohol within five hours of bedtime.  Alcohol is a poor hypnotic and causes nighttime awakenings.

6. Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate) after noon.  Even if it doesn't prevent you from falling asleep, it can cause shallow sleep or nighttime awakenings.

7. Avoid going to bed on either an empty stomach or a full stomach.  A light snack may be of value.

8. Bedrooms should be quiet, safe, and relaxing.  Clocks should face away from the bed, so as not to "count down" the minutes until morning.

9. Daily exercise will improve insomnia, although the effects may not be immediate.

10. Schedule "worry time" earlier in the day, so as to consider the day's problems and find some resolution before getting into bed.

11. Most adults need about 8 hours sleep every night.
Some require more and some less. Many poor sleepers spend much more than 8 hours in bed and this makes fragmented sleep a habit. Except if you have lengthy sleep requirements, limit your time in bed to no more than 8.5 hours. If you often take hours to fall asleep,go to bed later. Remember that children need more sleep than adults.

12. Bed is for sleeping, not entertainment
Television, computers and other distractions can interfere with your sleep. It is better not to sleep with your TV on. Your mind needs to be in the habit of knowing that if you are in bed, you are there to sleep. Don’t stay in bed if you are wide awake.

13. Make sure your bedroom is comfortable You should have a quiet, dark room with comfortable bedding and good temperature control.

14. Avoid daytime naps
Sleeping during the day will make it much more difficult to sleep well at night. If a nap is absolutely necessary, for example because of a late night, then limit this to about thirty minutes. Make sure that you are awake for at least 4 hours before going back to bed.

15. Don’t lie awake watching the clock
Watching the time on a clock just makes you anxious about not being asleep. If possible take the clock out of your bedroom. If you need the clock for the alarm, turn it around so that you cannot see the time.

16. Avoid sleeping pills except in exceptional circumstances They do not fix the cause of your sleeping problem.

17. You may need professional help
If you are still having trouble sleeping, if you have persistent problems with mood, restlessness in bed, severe snoring or waking up unrefreshed despite what should be adequate length sleep, make sure that you go and see your doctor

18. Exercise - Twenty to thirty minutes of exercise every day can help you sleep, but be sure to exercise in the morning or afternoon.

19. Have a hot bath or shower - Helps bring on sleep because it can relax tense muscles.

20. Read a fiction book - It takes you to a whole new world if you really get into it. And then take some time to ponder over the book as you fall asleep.

21. Cool down your room - Most people sleep better in cooler weather, so make sure that you have your bedroom set to the proper temperature.  You shouldn’t be too cold or too hot.

22. Sleep in silence - Avoiding distractions will allow you to feel more restful and to fall to sleep

23. Quieten a racing mind before bedtime.

24. Getting more emotional support may help.

25. Quit smoking.
Besides all the usual benefits of quitting smoking, nicotine is a stimulant and it can take hours for the effects of a stimulant to wear off.

26. Make your bedroom your oasis.
Your bedroom should be a sleep-friendly environment.

  • Clean
  • Dark as possible (a sleep mask can works wonders)
  • Comfortable mattress and pillows
  • No technological distractions, if possible
  • And while you are at it ...

27. Set your thermostat.
Once you are asleep, it is difficult for your body to regulate its own temperature, so make sure you are comfortable beforehand.

28. Drink a warm beverage before bedtime.  Chamomile and Valerian Root Tea are calming.  As an alternative, a natural sleep remedy is a glass of warm milk with some nutmeg and honey.

29. Create a comfortable and quiet environment for sleep.  Make sure your pillow, mattress and sheets are comfortable and support the creation of a nurturing environment.

30. When you are ready to fall asleep simply close your eyes and “observe your body”.  Wherever you feel tension you can consciously relax that area.  Then gently observe the in-flow and out-flow of your breath until you fall asleep.

31. Some foods can help, though. Milk contains tryptophan, which is a sleep-promoting substance. Other foods that may help promote sleep include tuna, halibut, pumpkin, artichokes, avocados, almonds, eggs, bok choy, peaches, walnuts, apricots, oats, asparagus, potatoes, buckwheat, and bananas.

32.  Keep pets off the bed. Does your pet sleep with you? This, too, may cause you to awaken during the night, either from allergies or pet movements. Fido and Fluffy might be better off on the floor than on your sheets.

33. If your partner’s snoring is loud and disturbing, have them see their doctor to see if they might have a sleep disorder.

34.  If you have a strong urge to move your legs at night, you might have a sleep disorder, restless legs syndrome (RLS).  RLS is treatable!

35. If you awaken and begin thinking, try counting slowly backwards from 500. Say each number slowly in your mind along with a complete inhale and exhale.

So catch those zzz's!

21 Topics for Small Talk Conversation for all occasions

Small talk - a conversation or chit chat without any specific topic - is a necessity in any social or professional environment. In fact, making small talk is the lesser of an evil when you compare it to an awkward and drawn out silence. But, what would you talk about - during small talk.

Here are some of the most common topics to start a conversation, or keep it going:

1. Hello/Hi: A simple hello is good way to start any small talk.

2. Introduction: If meeting for the first time, make sure to introduce yourself. It shows your interest in the meeting, and puts a name to the face.

3. Situation and surroundings: Talk about the surroundings or the venue: ‘Nice place, huh!’ or ‘I like this cafe!’

4. Weather talk: This is all time classic, may be a bit too much used. However, a talk about weather always gets the conversation going.

5. How was your day? : If the meeting is in the late day or in the evening, talk about how your day was, there is always something to share: ‘how is your day going so far?’

6. So what are you up to today/tonight? : Ask about short term plans for the day, or the night or the next day. This is always good way to keep the discussion going.

7. Talk about traffic: ‘How was the traffic on your way over?’ or ‘how did you get here?’

8. Give compliments: ‘Nice dress’ or Nice car’ or ‘Nice house’…say something nice. It makes the other side feel at ease and warms up the conversation.

9. How is school/work: The school or work topics are always good; people love to complain about work or school.

10, Sports: It is not only guys’ things anymore, women enjoy the sports equally. The trick is to find out -‘So, what kind of sports do you watch/play?’

11. Current news: Talk about current topics in the news - Swine flu, Tiger Woods, Health Care or any other current topics that your company may be interested in.

12. Family talk: If appropriate, e.g. among family friends, talk about your parents, kids, family vacation etc. Family friends can always have tons to chit-chat about.

13. Mutual friends: Talk about mutual friends, or friends of friends. Be positive, saying bad stuff behind someone’s back reflects poorly on you.

14. Drinks and Food: If you are invited over for a party, or if meeting someone over a drink or a meal, you can always talk about the food or the drinks being served,

15. Music, TV, movies comments: ‘Have you watched any movie lately?’ Or ‘Did you watch the Late Night Show last night?’ and so on…

16. Discuss hobbies: Talk about your hobbies, find out what your company likes to do in the free time. Exchange ideas on any common interests you share.

17. Talk about environment: It is the new fashion - a new trend, to be environment friendly. You can always talk about new initiatives or ideas about saving environment.

18. Travel talk: Talk about travel or vacation or a trip. ‘Any plans to go out-of-town this year?’

19. Share a funny anecdote or a joke: If appropriate for the occasion and if you feel comfortable, share some funny story or a joke to lighten up the mood.

20. Tech Stuff or new Gadgets:Talk about new toys - new cell phones, iPods, iPhones, new computers, new applications, Face-book….All of us have some new gadgets or computer applications that we like and love to talk about.

21. Discuss politics: Not everybody enjoys politics, but if you find the conversation stumble upon a political subject and if that is something you can talk about, nothing wrong with that.

To master the art of small talk or improve upon it, you should also take a look at the article ’30 tips on the art of small talk  it discusses the proper approach to small talk, how to keep the conversation going, and how to end it gracefully. Rather than dreading an occasion, you may actually find yourself enjoying it, if you can master the art of small talk!

Windows Mango vs Android : Which is the best os for your Smartphone

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
Windows Mango vs Android : Which is the best os for your Smartphone

A lot of times I come across people who think a phone is a smartphone only if it is powered by Android. Any one having a WP (windows phone) has supposedly wasted his hard earned money. So is this the case? Before we come to any conclusions let us first understand what an OS on a phone means.

Just like your computer a phone also requires a platform to run. An ecosystem is required on which you can install any application or play your favorite games like Angry birds. What windows(xp,vista, 7 or 8) is to a laptop or pc, Android or Windows(mango is the latest version) are to a smartphone. These are the basic software on which any additional software can run. So the question is why has two different OS when they basically do the same thing?

Well for one having a choice is always good. Just because some prefer chrome over Firefox doesn't mean Firefox shouldn't exist. Every one has a different taste and while Android may suite to some not all may find it similarly pretty or useful. Though Windows and Android basically do the same thing they do it in a totally different way. Some users may find tile system on the windows appealing while others may prefer the customization on Android.

Android
Android has been in the market for quite a while now and Google has made has proved that their little monster is not only here to stay but to dominate. One can find a slew of Android powered phones in the market from various manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC. So what makes Android so special?

Well the number of applications you can find on Google market( the online store where you download your apps from) is one of the major reason for the success of this platform. There are over 400000 apps available on the market( though you probably wouldn't download more than 100-150 of those but still its good to have a choice). One can find apps for anything from getting latest stock updates to monitoring your heart beat(not sure if it gives accurate results).

The problem with Android is fragmentation. Presently there are phones with Gingerbread, Ice cream Sandwich or Froyo available in the market. Every version of the android is named after a dessert. Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) is the latest version available. One can still find phones Gingerbread (Android 2.3, the predecessor to Ice Cream Sandwich on phones). It is all good as long as you get the lastest and greatest version of the software on your phone. But usually the manufacturers drop support after one or two updates and you are left with an older version on your phone that makes it somewhat obsolete.

Windows Phone

Windows is relatively a new comer to the market. The number of devices available with Windows are relatively less as of now but with Nokia joining the bandwagon recently this number is only going to increase in the future. The greatest difference between Android and Windows is the interface. While the Android offers the conventional interface with round icons and widgets, the Metro interface on the Windows uses live tiles as icons.

It is a breeze of fresh air from the conventional system and many may find it appealing. The core idea is to make things simple and provide live feed on the tiles rather than having to open them individually. Social media like facebook and twitter come intergrated out of the box.

Windows has got its own marketplace. Though the number of applications aren't anywhere close to that on Android; Microsoft & Nokia are personally taking care of that. Presently there are around 70000 apps available to choose from and that number is definitely gonna increase in the near future.

Now the big question comes what to choose? Both OSes have their own pros and cons.

Android
Pros

1. Number of applications
2. Customization
3. Internet tethering (sharing) over wifi or usb
4. Removable battery and Sd card support
5. More number of devices available to choose from

Cons

1. Due to a large number of devices available some application may be incompatible on some phones
2. Fragmentation( you can never be sure whether your phone will get the next version of the os or not)
3. Poor battery life

Windows Mango
Pros

1. Facebook and twitter integration
2. More fluid and responsive than Android
3. Multitasking
4. Social gaming on xbox live account
5. Simple user interface

Cons

1. No external sd card support(though windows phones come with 8-16 gb of inbuilt memory)
2. Bluetooth file sharing only with other windows phones
3. No internet tethering (an update to fix this problem promised by Nokia though)
4. File sharing with pc requires Zune

Bottom line being it all depends on your own preference. Both OS have their pros and cons. While there are a lot of sites and a lot of people on the forums over the web who will defend on one OS or another, the truth is both of them are equally good. If you already have an Android tablet or you are looking for an upgrade from your old android phone, Windows mango can provide you with that fresh change. For users who are getting their first smartphone it depends on what you want. Even though windows doesnt support dual core processors, that is because it doesn't need them. It is equally(or probably more) fluid and responsive on a single core as Android on a multicore.

10 Sex Tips For Women

Posted on 05:00 by Unknown
10 Sex Tips For Women
1. “Why does he want sex so much more often than I do?”
Basically, because he's awash with the hormone testosterone and you're not. Women have it, but not nearly as much as men. Testosterone is largely responsible for lust, anger and increased physical strength. Ceren Altin, of online science magazine Kingdom Robertea, explains: “As you get older, the level of testosterone decreases in both sexes and causes a decrease in libido.”

On the upside, what women lack in testosterone they make up for in sensitivity. Women respond better to touch than men, whose testosterone levels mean their skin is thicker and thus less responsive.

Researchers are currently investigating the possibility of producing a testosterone-based pill for women, because women with greater levels of testosterone have a higher sex drive. Currently there are no female equivalents of Viagra that have been medically approved, although various sensitising creams that draw blood to the genitals do exist. Alternatively, some herbal pharmacists suggest small doses of damiana, which stimulates the urinary tract and thus feelings of sexual excitement,  or herbal supplements such as ArginMax, which helps the body develop nitric oxide and leads to arousal.

2. “Why do women orgasm?”
This is a hot topic in sex circles because, unlike men, women don't need to orgasm to ensure conception. US anthropologist Donald Symons suggest women share men's basic neurological mechanisms, which is nature's way of simplifying the genetic human blueprint, In this way, the clitoris is simply an undeveloped version of the penis, serving no biological purpose - just as men have nipples but can't breastfeed.

Undeveloped it may be, but the clitoris is extremely sensitive. And although many women don't orgasm through intercourse, clitoral orgasms are much simpler to achieve (and many hours of fretting could be avoided if most women - and men - realised that). If he can rub your clitoris while inside you - the best position for this is you on top - you, too can come during intercourse, without worrying about where your
G-spot is.

According to Dr Glen wilson, co-author of The Science of Love, “Impressive confirmation of Symons theory of female orgasm comes from the discovery that male hormones increase a woman's sexual responsiveness.”

If you are still pursuing the big O, Wilson's advice is not to give up. “Fingers haven't yet evolved for playing the piano,” he explains. “However, many of us have learned to do so, thereby giving ourselves - and other people - a great deal of pleasure. Likewise, many women who have not experienced an orgasm can learn the skill and their partners can be taught to assist.”

3. “What actually happens during an orgasm?”
Sex research pioneers Masters and Johnson tabulated 10,000 episodes of sexual activity in more than 600 women (and men). They found that the human sexual response cycle consists of four stages: excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution. During orgasm men and women report very similar feelings. For men, direct genital stimulation usually causes an erection in seconds. Also, the testicles are pulled closer to the body, the scrotum tenses, muscles clench and blood pressure increases. For women, the excitement stage is characterised by the onset of vaginal lubrication, clitoral erection, changes in the size and shape of the labia, nipple erection and swelling of the breasts. At this stage, symptoms increase in intensity. Orgasm, for men, involves emission (when semen gathers in the upper part of the urethra, leading to a three-second sensation of “ejaculatory inevitability”, according to Masters and Johnson) and expulsion (four to five rhythmic contractions at the base of the penis, forcing semen out).

Orgasm in women involves rhythmic contractions of the uterus and the muscles round the vagina. Women normally experience three to 10 very strong contractions, also at 0.8 second intervals. In both sexes, oxytocin is released, which strengthens contractions.

Best of all, while he only gets one orgasm per session, you are ready to go again  from standing start.

4. “Yes, OK, but how do I get one?”
If you've never experienced an orgasm you're not alone: it's a sad fact that three quarters of women don't orgasm through intercourse - but you can change your fortunes.

Firstly, you have to prepare your body for sex. The vaginal lubrication, clitoral erection, changes in the size and shape of the labia, nipple erection and swelling of the breasts are all the basic ingredients to get you to the finishing line. Unless all these changes happen, you're unlikely to come - so if he's bashing away and you're getting nowhere, he needs to pay more attention to your clitoris and breasts until you reach the plateau stage. Then, he needs to take a bit more time out from his side of things to make sure he's reaching all the right places.

Dr Barbara Keesling, author of The Good Girls Guide To Bad Girl Sex, says “Some intercourse positions are more likely to offer the stimulation a woman needs to have an orgasm.

“The one I recommend is the position in which the woman lies on her back with her legs in the air and knees bent and her partner kneels between her legs. This stimulates the pubococcygus (PC) muscle (also known as the pelvic floor muscle, which you use to hold back urine), the cervix and the G-spot and allows her partner to easily withdraw his penis to stimulate the clitoris.

“Some orgasms may include only PC muscle spasms and a mild, good feeling - others maybe strong they cause your body to arch of the bed,” Now you know the theory behind it, it's a case of practice.

5. “Can he tell if I fake an orgasm?”
Not necessarily, but some signs can be harder to emulate than others. As well as the flushing and screaming, real orgasm cause your toes to clench, so it you are faking it, don't forget to get your tootsies involved. Internally, the only certain physical changes are the contractions of your vagina - and they can easily be faked, as women have strong muscles in that area. In fact, doing so may be very worth while as it can
encourage a real orgasm.

But instead of faking it, why not try to get into it. Make sure you allow yourself to relax; stress lowers your libido by inducing the hormone prolactin, which reduces sexual arousal. Pour yourself a glass of wine, have a massage and let your mind wander into the play zone.
6. “What's the most pleasurable time of the month to have the best sex?
Women become more sexually promiscuous during the middle of their cycle, which is your body's way of encouraging you to get pregnant. The female fertility hormone, oestrogen, is released in greater quantities mid-cycle to prepare you for pregnancy. Also women who have regular sex have higher levels of oestrogen, making them more fertile (and more keen!).

As well as this oestrogen surge, there's another factor contributing to your increased sex drive mid-cycle - your sense of smell.

Scientists of the Research Group for Sexology at the University of Cantania, Italy, studied 60 women, aged 18 to 40, none of whom were taking the pill. Each was exposed to a range of common smells - aniseed, musk, clove, citrus and ammonia - at various times during a single reproductive cycle. The researchers found that a woman's sense of smell is strongly linked to sex drive and may give women the ability to detect
pheromones in a man (sex chemicals that send subliminal messages to those around you), thus helping them find a sexual partner.

Backing this up, a University of Northumbria study conducted this year asked women to rate men's attractiveness from photos. When the experiment was repeated with the volunteers secretly exposed to male pheromones, all rated the men as more attractive.

7. “Why are some areas of my body more erogenous than others?”
Erogenous zones tend to be areas with the thinnest skin and the greatest concentration of nerve endings. They include the sides of the neck, breasts, inner arms and thighs and obviously genitals. The thinnest skin on the body, however, is on the eyelids.

Women may be more interested in having their erogenous zones explored than men are, as guys are already blessed with the ultimate in thin-skinned erogeny in the form of a penis. As for where's best, well, if it feels good, do it.The ancient Greeks believed that the most erogenous part of the body was the philtrum - the indentation above the lip. Whatever area flips your switch, it's worth paying attention to it - stroking and licking erotic zones sends signals straight to the penis or clitoris.

Focusing on the erogenous zones is the essence of foreplay, but sex counsellor and author Susan Quilliam issues a word of caution. “Penetrative acts are the way men most easily get aroused and climax.” she states. So whereas 34 per cent of women think foreplay is more important than intercourse, only 14 per cent of men agree. Men value foreplay simply because it gives pleasure to women.” Make sure he knows how vital it is for your pleasure.

8. “Is 'not tonight, I've got a headache' a valid excuse for not having sex?”
No. In fact, sex can cure a headache faster than Nurofen. This is because of the dopamine produced by the body during sex. Christophe Maquestiaux, a neuroscience expert based at the California Institute of Technology, explains, “Scientists have determined that, at its maximum, the pain relief offered by dopamine release is as potent as a high dose of morphine, making you feel better and letting you forget your worries as long as the stimulus is present.” Dopamine is the chemical that floods the brain when cocaine is taken, deadening pain. So if you've got a headache, you know what to do...

9. “When I fell in love with my partner, I wanted sex all the time. Four years on, I can't be bothered more than once a fortnight - why is this?”
When you're first attracted to someone, the hormone phenyulethylamine (PEA, which is also found in tiny quantities of chocolate) increases feelings of infatuation. And it's joined by a cocktail of equally strong chemicals, including norephinephrine, which makes you energetic and attentive, and dopamine, which floods you with happiness and desire.

The bad news is that after four years of neurotransmitter bombardment, your responses dull. You lose your sensitivity to chemicals responsible for that furious sex drive that you had when you first fell in love. Instead, other endorphins - including the “mothering” oxytocin - prevail, keeping you together but not necessarily desperate to spend all your time in bed.

So, what can you do about it? Research shows that dangerous situations increase production of adrenalin and in turn boost sex drive, because the body, having just averted death, wants to procreate. In an experiment in 1974, US psychologists found that when volunteers crossed a rickety rope-bridge, they were far more likely than volunteers who'd done nothing dangerous to rate pictures of the opposite sex as “very
attractive”. So, to rejuvenate your flagging sex life, take up dangerous sports together. Or failing that, just watch a scary movie.

10. “Is monogamy a realistic hope - or are we genetically hard-wired to sleep around?”
There may be little scientific truth in the old ditty, “Hogamous higamous, man is polygamous, women is monogamous.” In fact, it's a far more equal world.
Sexual attraction is activated in the brain by a variety of endorphins, including phenyulethylamine (Pea). This in turn releases a chemical called vasopressin, also known as the monogamy hormone, as it urges a man to make sure his mate doesn't go off with anyone else. One plus is that it means he has to stick around, too.

Women also have a monogamy drug. During physical intimacy - touching, stroking and sex - women produe the hormone oxytocin. As well as engaging the mothering instinct, it also helps you bond with your partner. (Men respond less hormonally to touch, which is why cuddling is often less important to them).

However, this doesn't mean it's monogamy all the way. While men may have a biological urge to “spread their seed”, women are just as likely to keep their options open. Dr Robin Baker, author of Sperm Wars, claims that during ovulation women are programmed to seek out the best sperm to impregnate them, even if that means having sex with two men in the same day during their monthly window of fertility. But, girls, if you do take advantage of your naturally sexy times of the month, remember: that handsome stranger might not seem quite so appealing in a few days time.

Six healthy habits for using laptops

Posted on 07:19 by Unknown

Six healthy habits for using laptops

1  Sit on a chair at a desk. this is especially important if using a laptop for longer than 30 minutes.

2  Keep a good posture. Adjust the chair and laptop for a “neutral” posture. this means ankles, knees, hips and elbows are at about 90-degree angles and hands are in line with wrists.

3  Relax arms, neck and shoulders. most muscle strain centres on arms, neck and shoulders so try to keep these relaxed. typing and using the mouse should be light, and hands and arms rested when not typing.

4  Don’t sit too close to the screen. Sit about arm’s length from the screen, depending  on individual eye conditions.

5  Take regular breaks. take five minutes out of every 30 minutes to rest both eyes and muscles. Stand and walk or change position to do other things like reading. look at an object about 10 metres away for 20 seconds.

6  Make sure there’s enough light. Work where lighting is sufficient and make sure your screen is free from glare.

Natural Help for Anxiety

Posted on 01:33 by Unknown

Natural Help for Anxiety

Dealing with Anxiety
Anxiety is a part of normal human existence. Everyone has been tense before a big test or performing in front of a crowd. It’s hard wired into our system to protect us through the “fight or flight” reflex. For some people these experiences are isolated, but for others anxiety is a constant and domineering force that controls and impairs their whole being.

A fast-paced modern lifestyle can be difficult for both adults and children. Trying activities such as work deadlines, job interviews, school competitions and public interactions don’t make it any easier either.

It’s not uncommon to find oneself a little overwhelmed at the thought of a particular upcoming event or situation. Sometimes demands may be so great that it is difficult to slow down and take a deep breath, causing us to worry about everything.

The natural way
1. A lot can be done to support a healthy ability to relax and slow down. One way of doing this is to keep your mind producing its own natural feel good chemicals by eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grain foods, getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine and exercising regularly.

2. Practicing relaxation techniques, meditation or even taking time for a regular walk on the beach can all help to reduce stress levels and facilitate a feeling of calm - helping us to wind down and relax.

3. Natural remedies can also help to support the nervous system and to keep nerves settled and soothed - to enable us to cope more easily with the everyday stresses of our modern existence. In fact, natural remedies have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years to support the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system.

4. In more recent times, research has confirmed this traditional wisdom. There are now many published clinical studies demonstrating the ability of a range of herbs to support the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system and maintain a healthy equilibrium - which will assist with staying calm under pressure.

5. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter manufactured and found in the brain. Along with other neurotransmitters, serotonin helps to support emotional wellness and sleep patterns as well as energy levels, sex drive and appetite. Serotonin also promotes healthy concentration, a positive mental attitude, memory and mental alertness.

6. While your feelings are not all about brain chemicals, the delicate balance between neurotransmitters and other hormones can play a big part in maintaining emotional stability, wellness and a positive outlook. Lifestyle, stress management and maintaining healthy relationships all contribute to happiness.

7. However, when there are challenges to face, a solid foundation of emotional health, balanced brain chemistry and a healthy self esteem will make all the difference to how we are able to cope or have the emotional strength to make changes necessary to improve our lives.

8. A lot can be done to naturally maintain emotional health and a healthy positive mental attitude.

9. It is a good idea to keep your natural feel-good chemicals flowing by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain foods, ensuring plenty of fresh air, adequate sleep, moderate sunshine and regular exercise. Many healthy foods (e.g. bananas, turkey and carbohydrates) contain nutritional precursors of serotonin and this makes them natural ‘mood foods’ to maintain healthy serotonin levels!

10. Also, never underestimate the power of a few stolen minutes during the workday (or school day) to rejuvenate the spirit and relax the mind - meditation, yoga or listening to a calming CD can all promote relaxation. Smoking, recreational drugs and alcohol can all depress the nervous system and affect the balance of neurotransmitters like serotonin - so try to cut back or avoid these habits for the sake of your emotional as well as your physical health.

11. Participate in social and community activities.  Social interaction and a sense of giving to your community enhance self-esteem and reduce stress.

12. Take care of yourself. Get regular exercise, eat nourishing food, and maintain a healthy weight.

13. Participate in activities you enjoy. Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Take up ballroom dancing? Mentor a child? Now is the time! (And activities like these will also help your brain.)

14. Stay focused on positive things and avoid negative self talk such as “I can’t do that” or “I’m too old.” When your self talk is negative, you will feel more stress. Instead of thinking what you can’t do, remember what you can do.

15. Connect with the people who are most meaningful to you. People with friends tend to be happier than those without. Stable social relations help you adjust to changes such retiring, moving, and losing loved ones.

16. Remember stressful events that you successfully coped with in the past and repeat what worked before.

17. Focus on addressing your problems instead of feeling helpless about them. Think of them as “challenges” or “tests” rather than as insurmountable obstacles.

18. Learn and use relaxation techniques and meditation.

19. If you are a caregiver, make use of support and education groups, as well as respite care, which provides time off for caregivers.

20. Medication may be needed in severe cases, which would require consultation with your doctor. Also, symptoms may begin to diminish on their own with age.

TOP TEN HOME REMEDIES FOR SEXUAL DEBILITY AND IMPOTENCE

Sexual debility usually results in people who are stressed up emotionally and physically or in people who overindulge in sex since an early age, resulting in poor sexual performance, resulting in the person further feeling low and depressed. Impotence also called erectile dysfunction [ED] is a condition that involves a partial or complete failure of erection of the penis with a normal sexual desire. This may occasionally resolve on its own within a few days, but if it persists then consulting a doctor becomes necessary. Avoid eating a heavy meal late at night. Taking a cool bath before going to bed may help in certain cases. Avoid taking excessive alcohol and stop smoking.

Give yourself some time to relax and avoid talking of work at home.

SOME HOME REMEDIES

#1. Those who are suffering from the above said condition are advised to take a well-balanced diet consisting of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits. They should avoid tea, coffee and all kinds of processed, canned and refined foods.

Sprouts are considered as wonder foods. They rank as the freshest and most nutritious of all vegetables available to the human diet. By a process of natural transmutation, sprouted food acquires vastly improved digestibility and nutritional qualities when compared to non-sprouted embryo from which it derives.
Sprouted foods have been part of the diet of many ancient races for thousands of years. Even to this day, the Chinese retain their fame for delicious mung beansprouts`. Sprouts provide all the essential vitamins and minerals. They should form a vital component of our diet. Sprouting requires no constant care but only an occasional sprinkling of water.
All edible grains, seeds and legumes can be sprouted. Generally the following are used for sprouting :
i. Grains : Wheat, maize, ragi, bajra and barley.
ii. Seeds : Alfalfa seeds, radish seeds, fenugreek seeds, carrot seeds, coriander seeds,
pumpkin seeds and muskmelon seeds.
iii.  Legumes : Mung, Bengal gram, groundnut and peas.

Alfalfa, as the name in Arabic signifies, is the king of all sprouts.
Grown as a plant, its roots are known to burrow as much as 12 meters into the subsoil to bring up valuable trace minerals of which manganese is especially important to health and digestion ; it is a vital component of human insulin. Apart from minerals, alfalfa is also a rich source of vitamins A,B,C,E and K and amino acids. Sesame seeds are another good source of nourishment. They contain all the essential amino acids in their 20 per cent protein content and higher concentration of calcium than does milk. They are high in letichin, unsaturated fats, vitamin E and vitamin B complex, besides other live nutrients.

Water for Health

Water for Health
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:W.J.Pilsak
People are always being told to drink more water but a lot of us struggle to get through a set amount every day. Almost two thirds of our body is made up of water, so it is not surprising that when we don't drink enough are health and well being start to suffer. Government guidelines recommend that we should try and drink at least eight glasses a day and some nutritionists claim that a staggering 80% of us are walking around dehydrated! This lack of fluid could affect your health, your weight and even your job.
Find out what the main benefits of water really are:

1. It helps with weight loss
Great news for anyone trying to lose a few pounds - water naturally reduces your appetite. A lot of people confuse feeling thirsty with feeling hungry so they eat when their body wants them to drink something. When you're dehydrated, fat cells become harder to break down and so anyone actually trying to diet will find it a lot harder if they don't drink very much.

2. It supports your heart
The hardest working muscle of all needs a lot of water to keep it going at full speed.  When you get dehydrated your blood gets thicker so the heart has to work even harder; if your heart is weak, this can lead to more serious heart problems later in life. A study by Eden found that drinking more than five glasses of water a day could cut your chances of having a heart attack by 41%, compared with people who drank less than two glasses a day.

3. It keeps you regular
If you suffer from constipation or piles you might have been told to increase how much fibre you eat. This is definitely one way of getting rid of the problem but you'll need to drink more water for the fibre to work properly. Otherwise it could have the opposite effect and make you worse.

4. It boosts your energy
In the same way that not drinking enough water makes your brain slow down it has the same effect on your body. For example, your muscles are around 75% water, your bones are about 22% and your blood is around 83%. If you are dehydrated, these body parts don't work as well as they should meaning you lack energy and feel tired or lazy.

5. It improves concentration
Because your brain is made of around 85% water if you get dehydrated it can affect your concentration and even your short-term memory. It has a particularly strong effect on your maths skills and it's all because lack of water causes your brain's energy levels to decrease.

6. It stops headaches and dizziness
Don't reach for the pills straight away; your headache could be a symptom of being dehydrated so drinking water could make it go away.  Even tension headaches and dizziness, which can be brought on by fatigue can be cured or eased by drinking water - this is because fatigue is also a sign of dehydration.

7. It fights infections
Drinking water can help fight infections all over your body, not only because it flushes out toxins but because when you're dehydrated you're more likely to catch a bug. It's especially good for getting rid of and preventing urine infections and kidney stones. Being well hydrated is also great for allergies and colds because it clears the airways.

8. It clears your skin
Most people know that drinking more water can be good for clear skin and it can also help the symptoms of acne. If you've got dry skin, drinking water will give it more moisture but that's not all. Water flushes toxins out of your body and anything else that shouldn't be there so it clears your skin of any dirt and bacteria.

9. It makes you exercise better
It's common sense to replace the fluids you lose when you sweat with water, but what might not be obvious is that your body works better and harder during your workout if you drink water.

10. Healthy individuals need approximately 10 to 15 cups of water each day. Water makes up a large percentage of the body’s systems and organs including the blood, muscles, brain, and bones. It is needed to regulate body temperature, to transport nutrients and oxygen to cells, to maintain proper lung function, to protect organs and joints, and to remove waste from the body. It is important to drink the recommended amount of water to keep the body healthy.

11. Help our eye health: Our cornea  is 80% water. Working long hours on the computer makes the eyes dry.

12. To prevent and treat Hypertension: hydration is crucial in treating it without using diuretics or medication.

13. To prevent and treat Depression: hydration helps the body naturally replenish its supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Top 10 Tips for Camera Phone

Posted on 22:36 by Unknown

Top 10 Tips for Camera Phone
Whether you're a novice or a pro with your camera phone, we've got some tips that will help you get more camera out of your camera phone. So grab your camera phone and get started!

1. Take lots of pictures
Since your camera phone is always with you, take advantage of capturing those spontaneous moments. Take lots of pictures to increase your chance of capturing just the right shot. Use pictures to communicate - it may be faster and easier for both you and the recipient.

2. Move in close
Many camera phones lack a zoom lens, so make sure you move in close to capture your subject Fill your phone's display screen with your subject to create pictures with greater impact.
Up close you can reveal telling details - a wrinkled nose or an arched eyebrow. Don't get too close or your pictures will be blurry and distorted. As a general rule, stand about one to two feet from your subject.

3. Shoot at eye level
Direct eye contact can be as engaging in a picture as it is in real life. When taking a picture of someone, hold the camera at the person's eye level to unleash the power of those magnetic gazes and mesmerizing smiles. For children and pets, that means stooping to their level. Your subject doesn't have to stare at the camera - all by itself that eye level angle will create a personal and inviting feeling that pulls you into the picture.

4. Watch the light
To create impactful pictures, move in close and fill your viewfinder or LCD with the subject. Unless your camera phone has a built-in flash, low light - bad picture. Try to take pictures in bright light. Without adequate lighting, your camera phone pictures will look dark and grainy. In sunlight, move around where the sun beams onto your subject. Indoors, turn on extra lights to brighten your subject.

5. Use a plain background
A plain background shows off the subject you are photographing. When you're ready to take your picture, force yourself to study the area surrounding your subject. Make sure a tree isn't growing from the head of your subject and that no cars seem to dangle from their ears. Check your picture in the your phone's display screen and retake it if necessary.

6. Try different angles
Start by shooting at eye level. CLICK Capturing many angles will add variety and  interest to your photos. Keep the ones you like, delete the ones you don't.

7. Set resolution to high
Many camera phones include a low, medium, and high resolution setting (picture quality).
Setting your camera phone to the highest setting gives you the best quality pictures.
The quality difference might not be apparent on your phone's display screen, but you'll see it on a computer screen.

8. Discover your phone's capabilities
Flip through your phone manual and see if your phone has any of these features: Picture messaging - send pictures from your phone to others.
Picture effects - snap black & white or sepia pics or add different frames.
Photo caller ID - set a picture for people in your address book so it appears when they call.
Wallpaper - save your favorite picture as the background for your phone.
BLUETOOTH - wirelessly send pictures to Bluetooth Wireless Technology enabled devices.

9. Stay still
Jittery hands cause blurring. Keep your hand still a second or two after shooting, since the shot is still processing. When you hear the click sound, it doesn't mean you captured the photo, it just indicates that you pressed the shutter.

10. Be courteous, be legal
Cell phone etiquette includes being mindful of its camera. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind.
Ask permission before taking people's picture.
Don't use your camera phone in places like health clubs or theaters.
Places like airplanes, courthouses, concert venues, and military bases, don't allow
cameras or phones. Abide by their rules.
Phones have limited storage space. Send pictures to online photo sites, Photobucket Gallery, instead.

Top 10 Health Tips for Men

Posted on 23:04 by Unknown

Top 10 Health Tips for Men
When it comes to health care, we men are like ostriches. We bury our heads in the sand. We are much less likely than women to visit our doctors regularly, take symptoms seriously and live a healthful lifestyle. Maybe that’s one reason why women have a seven-year average survival advantage on us!
Yet it’s obviously important that men of all ages become more proactive about their health. And an easy way to start is to follow these 10 basic steps to maintaining health and vitality.

1. Eliminate "White Foods" from Your Diet. White flour, white sugar and other processed foods are not only devoid of vitamins and minerals, but they’ve also been stripped of their natural fibre. As a result, they rapidly drive up blood sugar levels, which contributes to weight gain, diabetes and a host of other health problems. Avoid breads and baked goods made with white flour, sugar-laden sodas and snack foods. Instead, focus on eating fibre-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains.

2. Stay Away from Dangerous Trans Fats. While it’s important to reduce your overall fat intake, it’s even more important to watch the types of fat you eat. Deep-fried foods and anything made with hydrogenated oils (margarine, peanut butter, shortening, store-bought pastries and cookies) contain trans fats that raise your risk of heart disease. Eat only healthful fats, such as olive oil and the omega-3 oils found in salmon and other cold-water fish, which actually protect against heart disease.

3. Take a Potent Daily Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement. Although there is no substitute for a good diet, I am convinced that for optimal nutrition, you need to take a high-potency multivitamin and mineral supplement. Even if you are eating right, it’s unlikely that your food contains all the nutrients you need. Poor soil quality, storage, processing and cooking deplete our food of vitamins and minerals. Taking a high quality daily supplement is "health insurance" against possible deficiencies.

4. Include Weight Training in Your Exercise Routine. Aerobic exercise is great for cardiovascular conditioning, but it’s vastly inferior to weight training in attacking the "flab factor." Recent research has shown that as little as once-weekly resistance exercise can improve muscle strength. Even the busiest or laziest among us can find the time and energy for that. Join a gym, consult a personal trainer or ask an experienced friend to show you the ropes.

5. Maintain Your Optimal Weight. Current statistics suggest that half of us are losing the battle of the bulge, but maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You’ll look better, feel better and reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and other major killers. I know this is easier said than done, but if you just follow the four steps above, you’ll be well on your way.

6. Drink Alcohol Only in Moderation. You’ve probably heard of the "French Paradox," and that drinking wine protects against heart disease. Repeated studies have shown that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol (all kinds) protects not only against heart disease, but also lowers risk of death from all causes. Remember that moderation is key. While one to two drinks a day are protective, excess alcohol consumption is devastating to health. And for some, one drink is too many.

7. Protect Your Prostate. Around the age of 40, the prostate gland begins a growth spurt that results in symptoms such as frequent nighttime urination. The good news is that this condition, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, can be prevented or reversed by taking extracts of two herbs: saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) and pygeum (Pygeum africanum). Dozens of studies have shown that these herbs work in improving urinary flow without adverse side-effects. Suggested doses are 160 to 320 milligrams of saw palmetto and 40 to 80 mg of pygeum daily.

8. Reduce .Your Risk of Prostate Cancer. Experts estimate that 80 per cent of all cancers can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices. Avoid saturated and trans fats, which may fuel prostate cancer growth, and incorporate protective foods, such as soy, green tea and tomatoes, into your diet. Soy contains isoflavones with specific anti-cancer activity. Green tea is rich in polyphenols that inhibit the formation of cancer-causing compounds and block the growth of prostate cancer cells. And tomatoes, particularly cooked tomato products, are an excellent source of lycopene, which is linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. In addition, make sure your daily nutritional supplement contains high doses of the antioxidant selenium (200 micrograms) and vitamin E (800 IU), which have been shown to dramatically lower the risk of prostate cancer.

9. Maintain Vigorous Sexual Function. Most cases of erectile dysfunction (impotence) have a physical cause: You’re just not getting enough blood to the area in question. To improve overall circulation, follow the diet, exercise and supplement recommendations above. If you’re taking drugs, review them with your doctor, as many can worsen erectile function and impair libido. Smoking also significantly impairs erectile function. Several herbs have been shown to improve sexual function. Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow to the penis, and Panax ginseng, oats, horny goat weed, maca and seroctin improve libido.

10. Maintain Close Relationships. Another thing women seem to do better than men is maintain close relationships. Make a point to strengthen ties with your family and friends. Volunteer work, religious ties, even pets–anything that keeps you involved with others–reduces stress and enhances health.

Take charge of your health by incorporating these 10 steps into your life. The rewards of optimal health and well-being will be well worth your efforts.

Men’s Longevity "To Do" List

1.  Eliminate "white foods" from your diet.
2.  Stay away from dangerous trans fats.
3.  Take a daily vitamin-mineral supplement.
4.  Incorporate weight training in your exercise routine.
5.  Maintain your optimal weight.
6.  Drink alcohol only in moderation.
7.  Protect your prostate.
8.  Reduce your risk of prostate cancer.
9.  Maintain vigorous sexual function.
10. Maintain close relationships.

Safety tips for Women

Posted on 02:59 by Unknown

Safety tips for Women

Collection some general tips on how to avoid dangerous situations outside your home. Generally, the best idea is to use your common sense. Remember, most of the violent situations (mainly domestic violence) starts after verbal quarrel. Always try to "cool down" the situation or try to get out of your home before it's too late.

Here are some safety tips for Women:

1. Always be aware of your surroundings

This applies whether you are traveling alone or in groups. Don't just focus inwardly on your thoughts if you are alone, or your friends if you are together. Keep one eye out for your environment, looking out for suspicious characters, possible danger, etc. Also, don't assume that because your area has been "safe" thus far, that it will continue to be so.

2. Travel in groups

"There is safety in numbers" is not just a cliche. Its true. Make a point of traveling together with other sisters, whether its on public transportation, on campus, in cars, etc.

3. Change the route you normally travel by

If youv'e taken the same bus, train or highway to get to work or school, change your route. Even if it takes you a little longer, your safety is more important. By changing your route, you can avert possible attacks or harassment from those who know your schedule, method and route of travel well. Please note though that you should avoid short cuts that take you through unfamiliar or unsafe areas.

4. Look confident

Walk with a straight posture and your arms swinging by your sides. Avoid slouching or walking like a victim. This makes you an easy target for attackers.

5. When riding by public transportation choose the right seat

If you are riding by bus or train, do not sit on the window seat as you may be "blocked in" by a potential assailant. Always select the seat next to the aisle so that you can quickly leave if necessary. If you are taking public transportation alone after peak hours, sit as close to the driver as possible and/or choose the section of the bus/train that is most crowded. Try to get a seat near the exit as well.

6. If you are driving alone

Don t think that if you are in a car, you're safe. Windows should be up and doors locked even when driving to avoid unwanted passengers at intersections. When you are walking to your car, always have your keys ready, so that you can quickly get into your car.But don't just get in right away. Always check your car before entering, especially the back, for any intruders.

7. Never leave your car door unlocked

Even if it means for one minute to drop something off in the mailbox that's a few feet away. Attackers have been known to lie in wait for such an opportunity.

8. Be careful in parking lots

Always be alert in parking lots, especially when it's dark. Ask someone to *** you to your car. Between cars and inside cars, it's easy for someone to hide and wait until an unalert person comes along.

9. If you are traveling by taxi

Always check the identification of the driver (usually located near the visor) and ensure that it matches the driver. Once inside, don't sit behind the driver as it may be easy for the driver to lock the rear passenger door. Always choose the adjacent seat In addition, avoid flagging taxis. Always order taxis so the driver can be traced if something happens.

10. Don't use the walkman

If you're used to listening to your walkman while outside, drop this habit, especially in isolated areas. With your walkman on, you cannot hear the approach of a possible attacker.

11. Note "safe houses" along your route

Mentally note houses at intervals on each route you take that can be used as "safe houses" if you are attacked, such as shops or houses that you know to be occupied by a friend or acquaintance.

12. When you make a call from a phone booth

After dialing the number you wish to call always turn around so that you have your back to the phone and may see who or what is coming your way. You will then be able to tell the person to whom you are speaking that you may be in trouble and you may be able to use the weight of the phone as a weapon. The door of a telephone box could be used to wedge in the limbs of the attacker.

13. Do not open the door of your home without checking

DO NOT open the door to your home without first checking from a window, peephole or by asking and verifying who it is. Instruct children to do the same.

14. Report any suspicious activity around your home

If you see people loitering on the streets near your house, call the police on a non emergency number and report it.

15. Invest in a cell phone

This is an invaluable safety device. Keep it with you at all times and keep emergency numbers on it. Also, keep it next to your bed before you go to bed at night. Cell phones were first popularized by women as a security device, business people came later.

16. Parking tips

Avoid parking in areas that are not well lit. Where possible, park close to a school or work entrance or in a parking garage that has an attendant. If you see a suspicious person approaching or hanging around near your parked car, turn around and go back to an area where there are other people. Try to get an *** to your car through the campus or job security or local police.

17. Tell others about your whereabouts

Parents, spouses and friends should know where you are going and when you will be back, so that your absence will be noticed. Arrange a call in system with a friend if you live alone, whereby you call when you arrive home.

18. Trust your instincts

If you are walking somewhere and feel strange or scared, don't ignore this feeling. Take extra precautions by walking a little faster to get to a more populated or well-lit area or change the route you've been driving on.

19. If you think you are being followed, change your route and activity.

You can cross the street, change directions, or enter a populated building or store. Do whatever is necessary to avoid being alone with the person who is following you. Inform a police officer or security official about the follower.

20. Attract attention if you are in a dangerous situation.

Get others to pay attention to what's happening to you if you are under attack or being harassed. You can alert others by honking a car horn or loudly describing what is happening.

21. NEVER admit that you are alone

If someone calls your home and asks if you are alone, NEVER admit it. Ask who the caller is. If they refuse to identify themselves, calmly hangup. Keep the radio on in the house so that callers will get the impression that others are in the home too. Instruct children to do the same when they pick up the phone.

22. Obscene phone calls

If you receive an obscene call or a crank call, do not talk to the caller. Hang up if the caller doesnt say anything, or as soon as s/he shouts obscenities. Hang up the phone calmly and do not slam it down. Note down the date and time of the calls. If they are persistent, inform local police.

23. If you are a student

Avoid studying in isolated classrooms in parts of the college campus that are not regularly patrolled by the schools security officers.

24. In large buildings take the elevator, not the stairwell

Stairwells are usually quiet and dark. Most people take the elevator. But if someone creepy gets on, don't hesitate to get off at the same time. Or, if someone is already on the elevator who you feel strange about, do not get on and wait for the next elevator.

"Just For Kids" Tips

Posted on 19:03 by Unknown

"Just For Kids" Tips

1. Remove dried formula from a baby's face the gentle way - with a wash cloth dabbed with petroleum jelly.
2. Can't get your kids to take their vitamins? Try putting them in a Pez dispenser. It makes vitamins more fun to take.
3. Make kids' clown make up by mixing 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to 1 tablespoon of shortening. Color with food coloring.
4. Clean kids' wounds with a dark red wash cloth so they won't see any blood.
5. Make your kids bathmitts using old socks filled with left over soap slivers.
6. Make kids fingerpaints by mixing 1/4 cup of cornstarch with 2 cups of cold water. Boil until the mixture thickens, then pour into small containers and tint with food coloring.
7. Use a zipper-type storage bag to hold your childs artwork adorned with glitter and other substances which may not remain on the paper. This will eliminate clean up on the floor around the fridge or wherever you display their creations.
8. Clean the brushes from old nail polish bottles with nail polish remover, then give them to your kids as a brush for their water color paint set.
9. When your child complains of a sore throat, check it using a round flat lollipop as a tongue depresser. That way he or she won't complain when you want to take a look.
10. For painless removal of a bandage, lift the corner of the bandage, and use a Q-tip dabbed with petroleum jelly to lift it.

TEN TIPS FOR POSITIVE BODY LANGUAGE

Posted on 07:10 by Unknown

TEN TIPS FOR POSITIVE BODY LANGUAGE

Our face, eyes, hand gestures and posture express what is going on inside of us.

They each give valuable clues to others (and to us), as to whether the words we say are consistent with what we are really feeling.

Being aware of our body language allows us to send a consistent message and be more aware of what others are subliminally conveying to us.

#1. Eye contact

Eye contact is the first thing that people look for when they meet us first and good eye contact will give them a feeling of comfort and genuine warmth in your company,

Maintaining good eye contact shows respect and interest in what they have to say.

Here in Ireland we tend to keep eye contact around 60-70% of the time. (However, there are wide cultural differences, so be careful in other countries) .

By drawing the eyes away occasionally or looking at different areas of the face around the eye area, you create the impression of eye contact without making people feel  uncomfortable. Any more eye contact than this and you can be too intense, any less and you give off a signal that you are lacking interest in them or their conversation.

#2. Posture

Getting your posture right will automatically make you feel more confident. And when you feel good other people pick up on that.

Next time you notice you're feeling a bit down, take a look at how you’re standing or sitting. Chances are you'll be slouched over with your shoulders drooping down and inward.

This collapses the chest and inhibits good breathing, which in turn can help make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.

#3. Head position

When you want to feel confident and self assured keep your head level both horizontally and vertically.

You can also use this straight head position when you want to be authoritative and want what you're saying to be taken seriously.

Conversely, when you want to be friendly and in the listening, receptive mode, tilt your head just a little to one side or the other. You can shift the tilt from left to right at different points in the conversation.

#4. Arms

Your arms give away clues as to how open and receptive we are to everyone we meet and interact with, so keep your arms out to the side of your body or behind your back.

This shows you are not scared to take on whatever comes your way and you meet things "full frontal".

In general terms the more outgoing you are as a person, the more you tend to use your arms with big movements.

The quieter you are the less you move your arms away from your body. So, try to strike a
natural balance and keep your arm movements balanced.

Crossing your arms is a no, no in meetings or at interview as it can be interpreted as being passive aggressive or closed to suggestion.

#5. Legs

Your legs are the furthest point away from your brain; consequently they're the hardest bits of your body to consciously control.

When we are nervous, stressed or being deceptive our legs tend to move around a lot more than normal. So best to keep them as still as possible in most situations, especially at interviews or work meetings.

Be careful too in the way you cross your legs.

Do you cross at the knees, ankles or bring your leg up to rest on the knee of the other?

Quite often this is more a question of comfort than anything else.

But do be aware that the last position mentioned is known as the "Figure Four" and is generally perceived as the most defensive leg cross, especially if it happens when someone is telling you something that might be of a slightly dubious nature or, just moments after.

#6. Angle of the body in relation to others

The angle of your body in relation to others gives an indication of your attitude and feelings towards them.

We angle inward toward people we find attractive, friendly and interesting and angle ourselves away from those we don't, it's that simple!

#7. Hand gestures

Our hand gestures are so numerous it's hard to give a brief guide but here goes.

Palms slightly up and outward is seen as open and friendly. Palm down gestures are generally seen as dominant, emphasizing and possibly aggressive, especially when there is no movement or bending between the wrist and the forearm.

This palm up, palm down is very important when it comes to handshaking and where appropriate we suggest you always offer a handshake upright and vertical, which should convey equality.

#8. Distance from others

The distance we place between ourselves and others is crucial if we want to give off the right signals.

Stand too close and you'll be marked as "Pushy" or "In your face".

Stand or sit too far away and you'll be "Keeping your distance" or "Stand offish".

As neither of these is what we want, it’s always a good idea to observe other people in the group and see how close they are standing to each other. Then you can mimic that distance.

Also notice if you move closer to someone and they back away, you're probably just a tiny bit too much in their personal space, their comfort zone and should pull back a little.

Spatial distance varies greatly from country to country so always be aware of how others are spaced in groups around you.

#9. Ears

Yes! Your ears play a vital role in communication with others, even though in general terms most people can't move them much, if at all.

However, you've got two ears and only one mouth, so try to use them in that order!!

If you listen twice as much as you talk you come across as a good communicator who knows how to strike up a well balanced conversation.

Remember you never learn anything by speaking, only by listening .

10. Mouth movements

Our mouth movements can give away all sorts of clues about us.

We purse our lips and sometimes twist them to the side when we're thinking.Or, sometimes we use this movement to hold back an angry comment that we don't wish to reveal. Nevertheless, it will probably be spotted by other people and although they may not know the comment, they will get the feeling that you were not too pleased.

There are also different types of smiles and each gives off a corresponding feeling.

A full smile with the lip coming above the teeth shows genuine joy .

A tight lipped smile implies disapproval or shyness .

When one side of the mouth is raised in a closed lip smile it can imply attraction, or it can mean complicity for an ‘in’ joke.

A smile that does not reach the eyes is NOT a smile but  manipulation .

10 TIPS FOR EYE CONTACT

Posted on 06:37 by Unknown

10 TIPS FOR EYE CONTACT
What Is Eye Contact?
When we talk to others, we use more than just our words to communicate! We alsocommunicate through our body language, gestures, and such facial expressions as eye contact. Eye contact is when we look directly at a person’s eyes as we talk to him/her. Asking and answering questions, sharing stories, and greeting others as we pass by are examples of everyday situations in which we make eye contact with others.

#1:  GREET YOUR LISTENERS AS THEY GATHER.
Before the meeting or event even begins, an initial greeting with direct eye contact helps build rapport, turning strangers into friends.

#2:  START AND END WITH DIRECT EYE CONTACT.
Once you’re introduced but before you say a word stop, look out at your audience directly, and smile. End your remarks by looking out, scanning the audience, and smiling.

#3:   DIVIDE THE ROOM INTO SECTIONS.
Make sure to give each section of the room equal time and energy. Look to the left side for a few seconds, then the middle, then to the right. Don't neglect the people in the back!
Hint:  When looking at the back of a large room, it makes more sense to focus on a section or a head in the distance rather than trying to make direct eye contact with someone far away.

#4:  LOOK FOR FRIENDLY FACES.
To build confidence, initially make eye contact with people who are smiling, nodding, and showing support for you and your message.

#5:  USE THE 3-SECOND RULE.
Hold eye contact with a person for 3 seconds at a time. Have direct eye contact with a number of people in the audience, and every now and then glance at the whole audience while speaking.

#6:  MAINTAIN DIRECT, ROVING, CONTINUOUS EYE CONTACT.
Sweep your gaze across the audience, remembering to engage with people at the very back and far sides as well as those in the front.  The rule of thumb is 90% direct, roving continuous eye contact.

#7:  BE EASY ON THE EYES.
Have sincere eye contact but careful not to drill holes through people.

#8:  SPEAK TO THE EYES.
Avoid speaking to your notes, slides, flip chart, ceiling or back wall.

#9   USE YOUR EYES TO READ YOUR AUDIENCE.
Remember, a presentation is more than a one-way communication; it's a dialogue with your audience. As you scan the audience they are communicating with their eyes, their body language and their facial expressions.  Take advantage of this non-verbal communication and adjust your delivery accordingly.

#10: BE SENSITVE TO CULTURAL DIFFERENCES.
In the United States, eye contact communicates confidence, credibility and connection. People from Arab countries use prolonged eye contact to gauge trustworthiness.  However, in some countries direct eye contact is seen as challenging and rude, for example in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, people avoid direct eye contact as a sign of respect. It will be worth your while to know this about your audience ahead of time.

Top 25 Tips For Eyecare

Posted on 18:39 by Unknown

Top 25 Tips For Eyecare
1.  Feed your eyes good food. Vitamins A, C, D, and E are especially important for both adults and children who want good eyesight. Eat lots of green, red, and yellow vegetables. Good fats, such as fish oil, are necessary, too.

2.  Don't make your eyes work too hard! Wear the correct contacts lenses and glasses. Keep your prescriptions up to date.

3.  Protect your eyes from injury. Wear top quality, shatterproof glasses and sunglasses.Wear safety glasses for hazardous work and sports, and always follow work safety rules.

4.  Keep your eyes clean! Bacteria can easily cause painful and damaging infections in your eyes. Be very careful putting on and removing makeup, inserting contacts, and keep tissues used for sneezing away from your eyes.

5.  Keep your blood pressure normal. Have it checked regularly. Use natural means to lower it when possible, drugs when necessary.

6.  Don't smoke. If you are around smokers, you are smoking.

7.  Give your eyes a break! Look away from close work like sewing and computer screens frequently. Blink often when doing close work to keep your eyes moist.

8.  Do “eye yoga.” Blink slowly, look gently as far as you can left, right, up, down, and at your nose.

9.  Wear sunglasses during high ultraviolet light times of the day; mornings and afternoons.

10. Make sure you have your half-hour eye checkup every year at your optometrist. Children should be checked before school starts for near- and farsightedness, astigmatism, Amblyopia (lazy eye) and general eye health. Adults should be checked for near and farsightedness, glaucoma, cataracts, and other issues with aging eyes.

11. You only have one pair of eyes. Once lost, your eyesight may never be replaced.

12. Unlike your teeth, your eyes do not usually hurt when there is something wrong.

13. The eye examination can pick up early signs of potentially blinding eye conditions, such as glaucoma.

14. The earlier a problem is detected the greater the chance of successful treatment. This is particularly true for young children and the elderly.

15. The eye examination can also detect a number of other underlying health problems, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

16. An examination checks whether your eyesight needs correcting with spectacles and determines the best form of correction for your vision.

17. Good vision means working and playing better and safer in fact it means a better quality of life.

18. For young people, good eyesight is vital for learning. An eye examination will detect any problems in sight which may be affecting school performance.

19. Failing eyesight is often taken for granted as people get older. However, by having an eye examination and remedying problems in eyesight, older people can improve their quality of life significantly.

20. Poor eyesight is dangerous. Make sure that you meet the legal requirement for driving.

21.  Visit an optometrist regularly. Optometrists are professionally trained not only to test sight and prescribe glasses and contact lenses; they can also spot eye problems and treat infections.

22.  Be "eye aware" - make sure to check each of your eyes one at a time, and if you notice any changes, consult your optometrist.

23.  Parents, keep an eye on your children don't forget, they don't know what "normal" vision is, so watch out for signs that there may be problems. These include instances where children's eyes appear not to work together, if they rub their eyes often or if they seem to shut one eye to see more clearly.

24.  Contact lens wearers - never wear anyone else's lenses, wash them in tap water or sleep in them (unless your optometrist says you can) .

25.  Buy good quality, dark sunglasses - Sunlight can damage the retina and the lens of the eye, and we risk causing long-term damage to our eyesight. Good sunglasses don't need to be expensive: you can purchase perfectly adequate protective sunglasses from high street stores .
