Recipes for a Healthy Home

Recipes for a Healthy Home

Cleaning product companies tell you that to keep your home clean and smelling fresh, you need to rely on an army of cleaning and air care products. Sprays, wipes, powders, liquids and more are sold with the promise of improving your home and your health by removing dirt and germs.

What companies are not telling you is that cleaning products can contain toxic chemicals that may harm your health. Manufacturers often recommend frequent and repeated use of their products, but this also translates to frequent and repeated exposures to potentially harmful chemicals. You may inhale these chemicals by breathing indoor air and some of them can be absorbed through the skin. Long-term exposures to certain
chemicals found in household cleaners have been linked to serious health problems like pregnancy complications, breast cancer, birth defects, asthma and allergic reactions.

Some simple natural items can deal with the majority of household cleaning tasks. These products are already in most kitchens and are very inexpensive. TOOTHACHE-HOME REMEDIES

Posted on 20:51 by Unknown
TOOTHACHE-HOME REMEDIES
A 'toothache' usually indicates infection, pain and inflammation of the soft tissue within the tooth. This usually results in cases of dental caries or decay in a cavity, an injury, abscess of root of the tooth, cracked tooth or a worn-out filling. Initially the tooth may merely be sensitive to hot and cold substances in the mouth and also to pressure, like from eating. Later on the pain may become sharp, an electric jolt-like, sharp, throbbing, pressing, shooting or a constant dull ache. The pain may radiate from the one painful tooth to all the teeth in that row and rarely the pain may radiate right upto the temples. If the tooth is not properly treated, it will eventually have to be extracted. Insufficient intake of vitamins, minerals and proteins can also lead to
toothache.

HOME REMEDIES

1. People who suffer regularly from a toothache must avoid taking sweets, coffee and junk food. Take in more of fresh fruit juices, raw vegetables, millet and sesame (til) seeds, milk and milk products.

2. A moist hot  or  cold compress (whichever is comfortable) should be applied to the cheek over the painful area.

3. Pack the cavity in the tooth with a cotton piece saturated with clove (lavang) oil, which has anaesthetic and antiseptic properties. Even holding a clove in the mouth next to the aching tooth helps decrease the pain.

4. Mix juice of half a lemon in a  glass of warm water and gargle two to three times daily, preferably after meals. Limejuice promotes healthy teeth and gums due to its high content of vitamin C and thus can be used to apply locally to relieve the pain.

5. Press a piece of dry ginger over the  tooth that is affected and spit out the excess of saliva collecting in the mouth.

6. Placing a small piece of onion (or onion juice) on the painful tooth will relieve the pain since it is considered to have bactericidal properties.

7. Grind a few holy basil (tulsi) leaves with a little pepper and place this paste between the affected teeth and in the cavity (if present).

8. Aloe vera gel can be applied to the painful tooth to relieve the pain.

9. Sour milk is rubbed over the teeth and then rinsed with warm water to make them clean, remove the tartar and shine.

10. The juice squeezed from a fresh fig can be used as an application also.

11. A clove of garlic with a little rock salt should be placed on the painful tooth.

12. Apply a little pecacuan (hing) mixed with a little salt in the cavity of the teeth. Also a small piece of raw ginger is pressed into the cavity in the tooth.

13. A pinch of powdered milk can be pressed into the painful cavity.

14. Pieces of papaya fruit taken after meals tend to prevent tooth decay.

15. Soak a black tea bag  in hot water and then apply it externally to the cheek.

16. A mixture of pepper and mustard powder is placed in a piece of cloth and applied over the aching cheek.

17. The leaf of mango should be rubbed daily over the teeth for preventing tooth decay and for teeth that have turned sour.

18. Rub common salt on the teeth daily and gargle the mouth with a warm salt-water solution.

FEVER - HOME REMEDIES
Source: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en
Fever is the body's natural defense mechanism and a good sign to indicate that the body is fighting against invading organisms, but it can also occur from overexposure to heat or cold. When the body temperature goes over the normal level (which is 98.6 degrees F in the mouth and 97.6 degrees F in the armpit), it is termed as 'fever'. Some of the other symptoms which indicate that a person is suffering from fever are - hot, dry or flushed skin, chilliness, shivering, a rapid or slow pulse, malaise, bodyache, decreased appetite, thirst, headache, cold and cough etc.  If the person feels hot and sweaty, taking a lukewarm bath will help the body to cool off slowly. Consult your doctor, if the fever lasts for more than three days or if the temperature is more than 101 degrees F or if the fever is associated with severe headache, stiff neck, rash, confusion, back pain, excessive vomiting, excessive diarrhea, painful urination or in cases where the patient becomes vague or comatose along with the fever.

HOME REMEDIES

1. Eat minimum if required, but drink more fluids. Light coffee and tea are useful beverages to bring down the fever and increase the perspiration, because of the caffeine content in it. Give more of warm soups (preferably vegetable and onion juice), ginger ale and diluted fresh fruit juices (especially ones made from apples, oranges, grapes, cherries and pineapple).

2. The juice of half a lemon and a tablespoonful of honey when mixed with some warm water provide energy to the person.

3. Orange juice is the ideal liquid food in fevers, since it provides energy, increases the urine output and thus helps to flush out the toxins from the body naturally. In the start of the fever it is useful to keep the person only on  warm orange juice, given every two hours for a period of twelve hours and then slowly start giving the person all kinds of fruits for a day or two, followed gradually by a well-balanced food diet.

4. Half a glass of fresh grapefruit (chakotra) juice should be taken with an equal quantity of water twice daily. It not only quenches thirst but will also remove the burning sensation produced by the fever.

5. Soak about twenty-five raisins in half a cup of water and then crush them in the same water. They are then strained and the skin discarded. The raisin-water thus prepared becomes a tonic, to which half a teaspoonful of  limejuice is added to enhance its taste and usefulness. This should be taken twice daily.

6. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and take it twice daily.

7. Tea made from fenugreek (methi) seeds is to be taken twice daily. It acts as a useful cleanser and is a soothing drink during fever.

8. Coriander seed (dhania) decoction with little milk and sugar is also useful.

9. Chew a few garlic cloves or have a little bit of garlic juice three to four times daily to decrease the fever.

10. Cumin seeds (jeera), preferably in the powdered form, in combination with old jaggery are given in the form of small pills at bedtime to induce perspiration.

11. Mix a quarter teaspoonful of pepper powder with a teaspoonful of honey and a teaspoon of ginger juice and give it to the patient three to four times daily.

12. The juice of holy basil (tulsi) leaves mixed with some ginger juice should be taken twice daily for relief. Adding crushed ginger to tea during its preparation also helps.

13. Mix a few teaspoonfuls of onion juice and honey in equal quantities, and add a pinch of black pepper to it and take it thrice daily.

14. A liberal intake of rice starch (liquid) acts as a diuretic and thus reduces the fever after increasing the urination.

15. The juice of tender leaves of tamarind (imli) tree is useful.

PRICKLY HEAT-HOME REMEDIES

PRICKLY HEAT-HOME REMEDIES

"Prickly heat" is especially seen in people who, unaccustomed to high temperatures, are exposed to extreme heat of the summer and is also seen in those wearing an excess of clothing in the summer. Perspiration is a mechanism that helps regulate the body temperature by cooling the skin as it evaporates; but in this condition the sweat gets trapped under the garment resulting in blockage of the sweat ducts and heating up of  the skin.complains of itching, burning, redness and inflammation of the skin in patches with formation of small red vesicular eruptions, about the size of a pin's head with an inflamed base. The areas usually affected are the ones where the sweat usually collects (armpits, chest, back, etc.) or where the skin repeatedly rubs against skin (e.g. inside of breasts, inside of elbows, armpits, buttocks, etc.).

Wear comfortable, loose fitting, cotton clothes and take cool showers or apply wet cold compresses to help decrease the complaint. When the skin is very red and angry-looking put some ice cubes in a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel and apply it locally every few minutes till some relief is obtained.

HOME REMEDIES

1. Drink a lot of diluted limejuice, coconut water, buttermilk or lassi and water flavored with Khus grass roots. These decrease the overall heat in the body and thus prevent the prickly heat.

2. Almond and grapes (especially dry grapes) are very useful for these patients.

3. Increase your intake of Vitamin C by taking more of citrus fruits, black currents, green peppers, parsley, broccoli etc.

4. Fruit juice should be taken in plenty by these patients.

5. Application of sandalwood paste has a cooling effect and so heals the inflamed skin or  dried sandalwood powder and powdered coriander seeds (dhania) is mixed in rosewater and applied over the affected parts.

6. Aloe vera gel is a soothing itch controller.

High blood pressure is experienced by nearly million adults all over the world. Often accompanied by excess weight, high blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, and the leading killer heart disease. If you are someone who has high blood pressure, the mainstream medical industry wants nothing more than your eternal business, buying their pharmaceutical drugs that never really cure anything. But instead of doing that, try utilizing one of these natural solutions.

1. Drink Coconut Water to Combat High Blood Pressure
Coconut water is a tasty and nutritious beverage which has also been shown to be effective at lowering blood pressure. In one study where authors investigated the effects of coconut water when regularly consumed, they found that coconut water was able to significantly lower blood pressure in 71 percent of the study participants. This refreshing beverage has also been shown to rise above sports drinks in hydration while causing not nearly as many stomach pains.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Effectively helping thousands of health ailments such as  strep throat  and  acid reflux, apple cider vinegar is also a fantastic solution for high blood pressure. Just a few tablespoons a day for one month could have a dramatic impact. I have seen people’s blood pressure go from 150/80 to 130/80 in just a month while taking 2 tablespoons of ACV a day. Many others have experienced the same scenario, and blood pressure medications are often chucked. It could help you too.

3. Vitamin D
Research  points out that  vitamin D  can be an effective solution to  lower blood pressure, promote vascular health by helping blood vessels, and contribute to healthy arteries. While helping to lower blood pressure, this powerful cancer fighter can also protect you from the flu 800% better than any flu vaccine.

4. Aloe Vera, Hibiscus Tea, Cayenne Pepper
Aloe, cayenne pepper, honey, and tea are all fabulous for helping with a whole host of health problems. They are often used in combination to treat anything from strep throat to lowering insulin levels to boosting overall health. Not surprisingly, some individuals have also found this combination to effectively lower blood pressure.

5. Lifestyle
In addition to all of these solutions, living an overall healthy lifestyle with some exercise will also help greatly. This means avoiding fructose, which has been shown to up the risk of having blood pressure levels of  160/100 mm Hg by 77 percent  with the consumption of 74 grams (2.5 sugary drinks).

6. Fiber Rich Diet
Having a diet that has a huge amount of fiber has been proven to be successful in preventing and treating many different cardiovascular diseases such as Hypertension. However, the effect of different dietary fibre varies. Water soluble gel-forming fibers have the best result in lowering high blood pressure.

7. Sugar Low Diet
The common sugar that we use for cooking increases our blood pressure. This common sugar is called sucrose. The actual mechanism to how sucrose does this is still not fully understood.

8. Instead, people should switch to a diet that is high in potassium (vegetables and fruits) and essential fatty acids. Seven grams of potassium should be ingested daily. The diet should be low in salt, sugar and saturated fat. On the whole, diets should have a big component of vegetables and members of the onion/garlic family.

9. Vegetarian Diet
People who follow a vegetarian diet tend to have both a lower level of blood pressure and lower occurrences of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. There vegetarian diet can be a diet that can control blood pressure. Therefore researchers have a hypotesis that it could be that a vegetarian diet contains a greater amount of complex carbohydrates, potassium, vitamin A, polyunsaturated fat, vitamin C, fiber, calcium and magnesium; all of them might have a positive impact on high blood pressure.

10. Low Sodium Level Diet
The key for Hypertension patients to note is that they must avoid foods that have high levels of salt and sodium. People who were not able to get high blood pressure medication in the past resorted to consume a very low salt-reduced, low-calorie "rice diet." Apparently, people were able to lower their blood pressure significantly just by avoiding salt. If you have Hypertension, you must avoid foods that contain huge amount of salt or are highly processed. Examples of such food include fast food, frozen pizza and preserved vegetables.

11. Lose Weight:
Hypertension diets are commonly used to lower high blood pressure. Foods enriched in nutrients, mainly calcium, potassium, magnesium, protein and fiber are recommended to lower it. Decreasing salt and sodium enhanced foods are typically included in all hypertension diets. The key to hypertension diets are foods low fat foods and lean meats, to stop additional weight gain and/or lose extra pounds, and eating grains, vegetables, fruits, and proteins to obtain the proper minerals and nutrients needed in one's daily diet.

12. Cut Back Alcohol:
Save some money at the bar! Decrease the amount of alcoholic beverages consumed daily, if a typical night out consists of 3 drinks, cut it in half, save some money, and naturally lower blood pressure. A healthy amount of alcohol varies based on medical conditions, but a healthy male should consume no more than two drinks per day (24 oz of beer, 10 oz of wine, 3 oz of heavier liquor) a healthy female should cut the male's intake in half.

13. Limit Caffeine:
Make a half of pot of coffee in the morning. Caffeine can raise blood pressure by tightening blood vessels and restricting blood flow to the body. If a typical coffee drinker drinks 2-4 cups per day, cut that amount in half or switch to a decaffeinated brand. Sodas and teas with high levels of caffeine have the same affect on the body. Caffeine also effects people's way of dealing with stress.

14. Reduce Stress:
Take a deep breath, relax, and shrug off what a happened during the rush hour traffic drive home. Learning to deal with stress and maintaining a way to deal with it is important to lower blood pressure naturally. People are put in stressful situations daily, learning how to respond and react to them is important in keeping a clear mind as well as a healthy blood pressure.

15. Start An Exercise Plan:
Exercise is important in everyone's life, more so in a person's life with hypertension. Lowering body fat and increasing blood circulation is critical in lowering blood pressure. This does not mean one needs to get a gym membership, but it does mean there should be some sort of daily physical activity in one's life that they follow and continue until it is back to normal ranges (as told by a doctor, not your own monitor).
Try the above tips and  control high blood pressure.

Acne - Home Remedies

Posted on 16:30 by Unknown

Acne - Home Remedies
Acne is a skin disease caused by changes in the pilo-sebaceous units(the unit consists of the hair shaft, the hair follicle, the sebaceous gland which makes sebum, and the erector pili muscle which causes hair to stand up when it contracts) of a person. It usually strikes during adolescence but rarely continues till adulthood.

Commonly referred to as pimples, blemishes, spots and zits, acne lesions generally occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. It may range from being mild and moderate to a severe form. While an increase in sex hormones, during puberty,  is the leading cause for acne, there are other factors as well that add to its occurrence.

Remedies :-
1. Mix equal quantities of glycerin, rose water and lime juice and store it in a bottle. Massage with this liquid daily on all the exposed parts of skin to get a glow in a very short time.

2. To get a glow on the skin, mix a little curd with radish juice and massage with this mixture daily.

3. To get a soft and glowing skin, squeeze the juice of a whole lime in a bucketful of warm or cold water and then bathe with it.

4. To cure any kind of old skin diseases apply bitter gourd juice on the skin, let it dry for few minutes and then take a bath.

5. To bring a glow, apply sesame seed oil daily.

6. To get a wrinkle free skin, apply cucumber juice, let it dry and then wash it off. To get a blemishes free skin, dry a few orange peel, make a powder and make a paste by mixing little rose water, apply this on face, let it dry, and then wash it off with cold water.

7. In cases where there are cracks  in legs and hands or even prickly heat, mix 1 portion of lemon juice with 3 parts of sesame oil or coconut oil and apply it to the affected parts.

8. To get a fairer and glowing skin, mix little water and ghee with gram flour and apply during bath, instead of soap.

9. In cases of scars left over after burns, apply coconut oil regularly over the scars.

To cure many skin diseases like irritation, boils and scars mix 20-22  gms  honey with cold water and drink it daily  in empty stomach.

10. To get a beautiful and glowing skin, mix water with which  rice has been washed;  with turmeric powder, apply just before bathing.

11. Apply malai (fresh cream) on the face half an hour before bathing, scrub it off with hands on drying and then wash it off to get a beautiful and glowing skin.

12. To make skin soft, scrub raw potato peel over the skin.

13. To unclog the pores and to get a glowing skin, scrub used lime peel for few minutes on the skin.

14. To get a fair and beautiful skin mix amla (Indian gooseberry) powder with turmeric powder and milk and apply it and wash it after drying. Repeat this process daily for a few months.

15. Boil 1  litre  of water till it reduces to half, and then mix equal quantities of glycerin and lime juice, mix thoroughly and store it in a bottle. Wash your face with this liquid 2-3 times in a day. It keeps your skin cool in the summer and prevents it from drying in winter.
