Disable low disk space message in Windows 8

Posted on 08:44 by Unknown
Disable low disk space message in Windows 8
This tweak also applies to Windows XP.
When your system hard disk is running out of space, Windows Vista will pop up a small message indicating that there is less memory on your system. This pop-up message can come in handy but may even get annoying at a particular point of time. Aside from being annoying, Windows 8's constant checking for low space uses system resources which slow down Windows. Hence here’s a small registry tweak that can turn off the low disk space checks in Windows 8.

1. Click “Start”, and type “regedit” in the search box, and then hit the “Enter” key.

2. Browse to the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion” registry key.

3. Select “Policies” key under “CurrentVersion”.

4. From the Registry Editor menu, click “Edit|New|Key”. The key will be named New Key #1 by default.

5. Change the name of the key to “Explorer” and press “Enter”.

6. While the Explorer key is still selected, click Edit|New|DWORD (32-bit) Value. The DWORD created beneath Explorer, will be named New Value #1 by default.

7. Change the DWORD to “NoLowDiskSpaceChecks”.

8. Right-click on the new “NoLowDiskSpaceChecks”  DWORD and select the “Modify” option.

9. In the “Value data”, type “1”.

10. Click OK and close the Registry Editor. Windows Vista will no longer pop up the low disk space warning.

11. Schedule a backup.

Disable automatic restart in Windows 8
If there is a major error on your system, Windows 8 restarts the machine by default. This reboot occurs to record the error message for troubleshooting purposes but at the same time may cause inconvenience as the system is restarted without a warning. To disable the automatic restart feature in Windows 8:
1. Click on “Start|Settings|Control Panel”. The “Control Panel” window appears.

2. In the “Control Panel” window, double click the “System” icon.

3. In the “System Properties” window, click on the “Advanced” tab.

4. In the “Startup and Recovery” area and click “Settings”.

5. In the Startup and Recovery window, clear the “Automatically restart” check box.

6. Click “OK” in the “Startup and Recovery window”.

7. Click “OK” in the “System Properties window”.
After this when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. It will ask the user to reboot the system manually.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR LAPTOP IN 15 EASY WAYS

Posted on 06:42 by Unknown

TAKE CARE OF YOUR LAPTOP IN 15 EASY WAYS
Source:  http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en
Taking care of your laptop is one of the most important things you should know. You would want to take advantage of its full life, don’t you? It might have cost you quite a bit out of your pocket so it is just proper that you’d do everything to take care of it and maintain its good health. Here’s what every laptop owners should do to protect and extend its life.
1. Do not eat and drink while you’re in front of your laptop. Spilled liquids and fallen food crumbs and bits can easily damage the sensitive circuitry inside.

2. Do not touch the LCD screen. Close the lid gently by holding it with both hands when shutting it off. This is to avoid breaking it. It is also important to clean your monitor with approved cleaning materials only. Screen repairs don't come in real cheap so you may want to make sure the monitor is taken cared of properly.

3. Keep its temperature cooler by installing a laptop cooler or chill mat to reduce its operating temperature.

4. A laptop’s battery is like human muscles - if you don’t exercise it, it’d become useless. Use your laptop's battery until it tells you to recharge. At least once a week unplug it from the wall and let it run on battery power. This will make the battery life lasts much longer.

5. Do not let it run for straight two days, even on powerful laptops. Laptops can get very hot and leaving it on for a longer period of time may cause overheating. It is advisable to install software that automatically puts your laptop in a sleep or hibernate mode or even shut it down after a period of inactivity.

6. If you need to move and take your laptop more than a few feet away, shut it down or put it to sleep
before moving on. Do not walk with your laptop on because you are risking the hard drive with every stumble, stump, or jar you make.

7. Don't close anything inside your laptop. There is a little clearance between the screen and the keyboard and even a couple sheets of paper can put stress onto the screen. Also, avoid putting heavy objects on top of your laptop. These careless actions can damage and break the screen.

8. Always use the laptop carrying bag given by the company gave you to reduce the risk of breaks because of laptop being bumped to or dropped accidentally.

9. Cover your laptop, and also your keyboard, when you’re not using it, e.g. with a simple cloth, to protect it from dust, especially in dry and dusty areas.  However don’t forget to turn of the power first!  You can clean the keyboard from time to time with a little airpump.

10. Finally guard its health by using antivirus software and firewall.  Keep the installed antivirus updated. Your internet-connected laptop is always at risk of being infected with viruses, so you may want to take the necessary precautions. Data loss because of viruses can give you headaches.

11. Treat the laptop like you would your wallet. Don’t leave it lying around. Avoid leaving it in the car, or if you must, lock it in the boot.

12. Be sure nothing is stacked or thrown on top of the laptop.

13. Put the laptop on a solid surface if you are using it for a long time. Resting it on a pillow or other soft material might block the airflow vents and cause it to overheat.

14. Recharge the battery each night. While charging, place it on a hard surface like the dining table or kitchen bench. Don’t charge it near water.

15. Unplug the laptop if there’s an electrical storm.

9 Steps to help in keeping your organization Secure

Posted on 01:09 by Unknown

9 Steps to help in keeping your organization Secure

The following are a few Anti-Hacking tips that will help in keeping your systems secure.

1. Install Anti-Virus software and ensure that it’s regularly updated.(If you do only one thing to help protect the safety of your computing environment, always take prompt advantage of software updates).

2. Anti-virus software isn’t enough – it’s also a good idea to install firewall (Good fences make good neighbors) software which will help prevent unauthorized incoming and outgoing communications from your computer while connected to the Internet.

3. Passwords protect the settings on the software so no-one else can alter protection levels. Most anti-virus programs also offer some protection against Trojans, which aren’t actually a virus, but a small program that allows others to control your computer.

4. Turn off your preview window in your email program. Some viruses, called worms, can infect your system without you clicking on attachments – just by you having your preview window open. Some worms can cause your sensitive information and documents to be transmitted to millions of people. Be very cautious in opening attachments, even if it appears to come from someone you know – their system may be infected.

5. Disconnect your computer from the Internet when not in use. The longer you are connected to the Internet, the more opportunity you give for persons to gain unauthorized access.

6. If your computer is used by others, carry out regular examination of the software on it and research any software that you discover that you haven’t installed yourself. It’s safest to make it a policy not to allow any software to be installed without your permission.

7. If you must store usernames and passwords on your system, ensure they are contained in a document that is password protected. It is safest not to store any passwords on your computer. Don’t let Windows “remember” passwords for you. Passwords should always be more than 8 characters long and include upper and lower case letters, numerals, symbols.

8. Ensure that you log out of online services properly. Failure to do so can allow others who use your computer to gain access to those services and you can be blamed for their activities.

9. Back up your files and store them away from your computer. Frequent backups just make good sense. The more virulent types of attacks damage or infect your hard drive and you can lose valuable personal information. By backing up your data weekly you can help protect your important files, computer settings, and irreplaceable digital media.

How to recover password in Windows

Posted on 07:54 by Unknown

How to recover password in Windows

Because of the security features built into Windows XP, it is virtually impossible to get back into the system without the password.
You have several options to try and get around this problem.

If you have access to another user account with administrator rights, you can use that account to change the password of the account that is locked out. You can also use the default Administrator account that is built into Windows XP.

First you need to boot the system into Safe Mode.
1.Restart your system.
2.When you see the blue Dell globe or screen, press the ( F8 ) key about 3 times a second.
3.You should get the Windows startup menu. Use the (Up or Down) arrow keys to highlight (SafeMode)
4.Press (Enter) on (Safe Mode), then press (Enter) on (Windows XP).
5.The system should boot to Safe Mode.

Once you are at the Account Log on Screen, click on the icon for the user account with administrator rights, or click on the icon for the administrators account.
Note: For Home the Administrator account isn't normally shown & in Safe Mode you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys twice to show.
For PRO you can do this in normal mode

When the system has booted to the desktop, use the following steps to change the accounts password.
1.Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools.
2.Click Computer Management.
3.Double click Local Users and Groups, double click the folder Users.
4.Right click on the account name that is locked out, and click on Set Password.
5.You may get a warning message about changing the password, simply click proceed.
6.Leave the New Password box blank, also leave the Confirm Password box blank.
7.Click OK, and OK again.
8.Then close all Windows, reboot the system and try to log in.

There are also applications that can recover the password for you.
The following companies provide these applications at a cost.
iOpus® Password Recovery XP here.
http://en.kioskea.net/download/start/download-17730-iopus-password-recovery-xp
Asterisk Password Recovery XP 2.14
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=1903&file=15&evp=2e7b41299bb4858eb129888d11ddcfdf
Windows XP / 2000 / NT Key here.
http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2094_4-10219965&ontId=2094_4&spi=05e8cc79a80bf6567db4aaaa19dffa0d&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=10280982&mfgId=101313&merId=101313&pguid=UUM1ywoOYJEAAAzBLlcAAACo&ctype=dm;&cval=TIGHTROPE;&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.cnet.com%2F3001-2094_4-10219965.html%3Fspi%3D05e8cc79a80bf6567db4aaaa19dffa0d

If the above information does not help in recovering the password, the only option left is to format the hard drive then reinstall Windows and the system software.

Top Ten Tweaks in MS Window7

Posted on 03:40 by Unknown

Top Ten Tweaks in MS Windows 7
In the sense of this topic and my belief, "tweaking" is doing something to make Windows work better, either by changing the "safe default" to something that utilizes the hardware more, turning some component on or, most frequently, turning some unwanted component off and or/deleting files/reg entries.

While with OS-es up to XP I could get the job (of clean install + updates+ installing few most needed programs + calming down) done in 3 days, with 7 I'm satisfied and confident in the OS installation only after 3 weeks or more. Of course, that time will go down with experience, but it will never approach the time XP requires.

So here goes my list, from best to "less best, but still pretty good":

1. Install SSD - OK, I break my criterium with the first item, but I think it absolutely made most difference - on a 5400 laptop HDD, Windows 7 was unbearable, but even on a crappy first gen SSD it can be lived with. Other tweaks help, but this is the biggest quantum leap.

2. Use "Install Wim Tweak" / "DISM remove components" (Also pre-install "liters", of which I use Windows 7 Toolkit) - a great help to speed up cleaning, but of course, even though some dependencies are mapped, we're still a long way from a "safe" preset or list for everyone.

3. Turn off "Startup Event Trace Sessions" in "Computer Management -> performance -> Data Collector Sets" - The speeedup is noticeable immediately (OK, after reboot), at the expense of losing functionality that might or might not be needed.

4. Remove unneeded foreign language fonts - yeah, it still makes a big difference.

5. With the help of Sysinternals Autoruns and/or Nirsoft's ActiveXHelper, FileTypesMan, MimeView, RegDllView, ShellExtensionsView remove unnecessary things (Now you know why it takes me weeks to complete this.

6. Tweak services, of course.

7 Turn off IPv6 protocols (they are still not widely used today, but it might be needed someday). I noticed some speedup (maybe it's all in my head?).

8. Take ownership of files/reg keys - not a tweak in itself , but a skill that every Win7 tweaker must learn.

9. Plain old Reg tweaks - I can't really single out one or few that is/are most important and made most of the difference because there are simply too many of them (my XP tweaks folder is 300 KB, the new one for 7 is addidional 150 KB on top of that - many of the old ones still apply).

10 Boot tracing with Process Monitor - it's not the tracing that is important, it's deciphering and hunting for the undocumented registry entries that's fun for me. I strongly believe that it's better to "tell" windows what you want - leaving registry entries unpopulated is simply not an option for me. Of course, you have to find the default, which is not always easy to do or obvious, but it is still rewarding IMO.So, that's it. I hope this will bring some useful discussion.

10 RULES IN INDIAN FILM MAKING

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown

10 RULES IN INDIAN FILM MAKING

1.  Two brothers separated in childhood will always grow up on different sides of the law. The law-breaker, however, will suddenly turn over a new leaf before the end, bash up the villain (who is the *real* bad guy), and be pardoned for all his sins before the last-scene family reunion. (This is possible only if he has a heroine - see rule 2 below).

2.  If the number of heroes is not equal to the number of heroines, the excess heroes/heroines will a) die b) join the Red Cross and take off to Switzerland before the end of the movie.

3.  If there are 2 heroes in a movie, they will fight each other savagely for at least 5 minutes (10 if they are brothers).

4.  Any court scene will have the dialogue “Objection milord”. If it is said by the hero, or his lawyer, it will be overruled. Else, it will be sustained.

5.  The hero’s sister will usually marry the hero’s best friend (i.e. the second hero). Else, she will be raped by the villain within the 1st 30 minutes, and commit suicide.

6.  In a chase, the hero will always overtake the villain, even on a bullock-cart, or on foot.

7.  When the hero fires at the villain(s), he will never
a) miss
b) run out of bullets. When the villain fires at the hero, he will always miss (unless the hero is required to die, as in rule 2).

8. Any fight sequence shall take place in the vicinity of a stack of
 a) pots
b) barrels
c) glass bottles, which will be smashed to pieces.

9. Any movie involving lost and found brothers will have a song sung by
a) the brothers
b) their blind mother (but of course, she has to be blind in order to regain her sight in the climax)
c) the family dog/cat.

10. Police inspectors (when not played by the hero) come in two categories:
a) Scrupulously honest, probably the hero’s father – killed by the villain before the titles.
b) Honest, but always chasing the anti-hero (as in Rule 1), saying “Tum kanoon se bach nahin sakte”, only to pat him in the back in reel 23. Usually, this inspector’s daughter is in love with the anti-hero.
c) The corrupt inspector, (usually the real villain’s sidekick) unceremoniously knocked about by the hero(s) in the climaxWell i really found that interesting and very true in fact. Indian movies really run full of crap. That doesnt make hollywood any better. It runs with the crap too. But with more special effects
