Doctors’ Day In India

Posted on 19:06 by Unknown
Doctors’ Day In India
First of July has been designated as Doctors’ Day in India. It is indeed important that both doctors and patients be made aware of the existence of this day and at the same time, of its relevance and significance in the larger context of healthcare in this country. Here is a little history as to why doctors’ day is celebrated on this particular day.

Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1, 1882 at Bankipore in Patna in Bihar. His career as a physician started in 1911 when he came back to India from Bartholomew’s hospital in the UK having completed his MRCP. Thereafter, he joined the teaching staff of Calcutta Medical College and later moved to Campbell Medical School and then to Carmichael Medical College. He dedicated his life to the Upliftment of Indian society, especially, the downtrodden. Dr Roy was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.

Not only did he excel as a physician, he was an educationist, social reformer, freedom fighter (joined Mahatma Gandhi in the Civil Disobedience movement), leader of Indian National Congress and later second chief minister of West Bengal. Dr B C Roy passed away on July 1, 1962 on his birthday. Thus July 1st was considered an appropriate day to be designated as Doctors’ Day- a tribute to Dr B C Roy and the entire medical profession.

He was a breach birth and was born with an enlarged bottleneck heart.  Infamous Serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Jr. was arrested for murder on December 21, 1978. His private life was full of sexual perversions and sadistic murders. Gacy was full of public private conflicts and contradictions. Publicly he was a homophobic
heterosexual.Privately he was a homosexual psychopath. He was executed on May 10, 1994 for the torture, rape, and murder of at least 33 boys and men, 27 of whom were buried in a crawl space under the floor of his house. His physical autopsy revealed no abnormalities. The current psychological autopsy reveals Evil.
He lured these men to his home to sexually abuse them and ultimately either stab or strangle them to death.  When police began investigating a missing person report on a young boy, Gacy became a targeted suspect.  Through a search warrant, investigators found 29 of the 33 victims had been buried in a crawl space underneath Gacy’s house.  The other four victims were discarded into a nearby river.

Ted Bundy -A Serial Killer

Ted Bundy -A Serial Killer
Theodore Robert Bundy seemed destined to live a charmed life; he was intelligent, attractive, and polished. He had been a Boy Scout in his youth and later an honor student in psychology at the University of Washington. He also served as a work-study student in a Seattle crisis clinic.

Bundy’s quest for domination may have begun with his shame for having been the illegitimate son of his 22-year-old mother and a sailor with whom she had had a brief sexual encounter-Bundy was born in 1946 in the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont.

One of Bundy’s psychology professors wrote of him: “He conducts himself more like a young professional than a student. I would place him in the top one percent of the undergraduates with whom I have interacted” (quoted in Leyton, 1986). While still in his 20s, Bundy was also named assistant to the chairman of the Washington State Republican Party and was lauded as an “up and comer” in political circles. Of course, this rosy biography omits the fact that Ted Bundy hunted down, raped, and killed young women for the sheer thrill of possessing and controlling them. It was early in January, 1974, when Ted Bundy attacked his first victim: a young woman who Bundy maimed while she was asleep, leaving her with permanent brain damage.

From 1974 through 1978, Bundy stalked, sexually assaulted, and killed as many as 36 victims in Washington, Oregon, Utah, Colorado,  and Florida. He used his good looks and charm as lures to trap his victims. Looking helpless and harmless -he would walk on crutches or wear a fake cast on his arm-Bundy would enlist the aid of a young woman and, after securing her trust, would choke her to death
and mutilate and sexually abuse her body before disposing of it in a remote area. No one knows for sure how many women he killed, because he never gave a complete confession.

Beneath the superficial charm of Bundy’s overt behavior lurked a far different person, one who was driven by a lust to dominate people and who was incapable of feeling guilt. In Bundy’s own words, he was the “most cold-hearted son of a bitch you’ll ever meet” who didn’t “feel guilt for anything” and felt “sorry for people who feel guilt”. Like many antisocial personalities, Bundy overestimated his skills; he was convicted of the sorority sisters’ murders and the kidnapping, murder, and mutilation of a 12-year-old Florida girl.

Ted Bundy, one of the United States’s most notorious serial killers, was an extreme example of an antisocial personality disorder. Some clinicians still use the terms psychopath or sociopath to describe such people.

Bundy’s delaying tactics finally came to an end on 24 January 1989, and he was executed at 7 am, taking the secret of his actual victim count with him. His body was cremated and his ashes were spread over the same Washington State mountain area that had served as his favourite dumping ground for the bodies of his victims.

“You feel the last bit of breath leaving heir body. You’re looking into their eyes. A person in that situation is God!” -Ted Bundy, on the joy of murder

How to Rewire Your Brain

Posted on 22:16 by Unknown
How to Rewire Your Brain

Think Your Way to a Better Life
Humankind has always been fascinated by the power of the mind, and indeed the limits are most likely never to be known. Just imagine if it were possible to turn your greatest weakness into your greatest strength. If you could rewire your brain to reverse ingrained personality traits from procrastination to pessimism and improve everything from your memory to your grasp of foreign languages. Well, not only do neuroscientists now believe this is possible, but they can show us how. A great deal of attention has been paid to the extent at which our brains can perform, and the untapped possibilities within. It is known; however that there is a direct connection between our thoughts and our actions.

Here's how to increase your ability to change:

1. Be rigorously honest with yourself. You can only make changes when you accept yourself as you are.

2. Acknowledge that you are who you choose to be, not who you were yesterday.

3. Know that it takes about 14 days to begin to form a lasting habit. Those first two to three weeks are the hardest, physically and emotionally. Give yourself the time.

4. Write your life story. Literally. Explain why you are the way you are, and how and why you continue to convince yourself you can't change.

5. Write the truth about why you haven't made changes and what changes are possible. Be honest. Take care to evaluate the way you use language. If you find yourself phrasing statements in the negative - like "I can't" or "It's too hard" - consider how to rephrase these statements as things you can do and that are easier for you to stick with.

6. List the life values most important to you, and explore your purpose in life. Do your habits align with these values and mission? If they don't, you'll likely experience stress.

7. Now write the story of who you want to be. The truth is, people have tremendous capability to change. Write down what it will take to get you to make those changes. What will success look and feel like? How will you measure successes along the way?

8. Write down how you might undermine these goals. What should you do to avoid these pitfalls? The most common are 1) rationalizing, 2) denial and 3) minimizing the truth.

9. Announce the changes you plan to make. Ask for the help and support you need from friends and family or from medical professionals. Your commitment will be much more powerful if you do.

10. After six weeks, recognize that you'll probably miss the benefits of your new habit if you stop.
11. Celebrate milestones along the way!

15 Secrets for Using Body Language in Business

Posted on 08:33 by Unknown
15 Secrets for Using Body Language in Business

We instantly send messages that speak more loudly than words, using body language or non-verbal communication. Body language communicates powerfully because we are visual creature. We take in much more information with our eyes than with our other senses.

Here are some tips on how to use body language to make a great impression in business, so you connect with your customers.

1. Posture:  People who exude class and confidence invariably have great posture. They stand and walk tall. Good posture makes a strong impression because people notice it from across the room. It involves the whole body, not just small muscles. To make a great impression, stand and walk tall.

2. Facial expression: We look at people’s faces to find out their moods. When your face and words don’t match, you send a mixed message. For credibility, make sure your facial expressions match your words.

3. Smile: The smile has a magical quality that is almost impossible to ignore. There is something inside us that responds instinctively to a sincere smile. Smile warmly, and you’ll make an instant connection.

4. Eye contact: Without eye contact, communication is almost impossible. Try talking to someone without looking at them. Do you feel any connection? When doing business with North Americans, aim to maintain eye contact about 60-70% of the time to maximize its positive impact. With people from other cultures, you may need more or less eye contact.

5. Hands: People notice other people’s hands, so what you do with your hands can betray your true feelings. Nervousness often shows in your hands through rubbing or wringing them together, or clasping and unclasping them. To appear calm and relaxed, avoid excessive fidgeting, or rapid, exaggerated gestures.

6. Open or closed posture: Body language can be described as Open or Closed. Open body language welcomes interaction. It involves facing people squarely, and making eye contact. Closed body language is used when people feel threatened or uncomfortable. They withdraw or hide their bodies by using various stances and physical shields for protection.

7. Mirroring: Good communicators naturally mirror people’s body language. It’s a way of getting in sync. We all use different tones of voice and language when communicating in business from when we talk to close friends or family members. You can easily tone down or ramp up your energy level, rate of speech, and voice tone to make the other person feel comfortable.

8. They place their hands in their chest. This signifies openness and conveys sincerity, honesty, or dedication. However, a woman putting her hands in her breast is a defensive position and may indicate that she is surprised or astonished.

9. They take their glasses off, after which they may either (1) clean them, or (2) put the tip of the frame in their mouth. They are buying themselves some time to think things over. A frame in the mouth would also likely indicate that they need more details and they are willing to listen.

10. They are pinching the bridge of the nose most likely with eyes closed. People doing this are engaged in very deep thought. They may be involved in a difficult situation, where they are aware of the consequences that may occur as a result of making crucial decisions.

11. They put a palm below the chin, index finger pointed and extended along the cheek, while other fingers placed beneath the mouth. This gesture more likely indicates thoughts that are criticizing or antagonizing other people.

12. They walk with the head down and hands behind the back. People who walk this way are probably worried about their problems, and they are thinking of ways to solve them.

13. When doing sales calls and presentations, be sure to use sincere and open movements all the time. Do not cross your arms, as this can ruin the trust of your potential customer. The outward and upward gestures of your hands are recommendable. If you lean back on a chair and place your hands at the back of your head, it may drive your clients away as this is a sure sign of arrogance and a false sense of confidence. Meanwhile, if you place your hands on your waists, you are exuding positive confidence.

14. "Don't point.” Pointing at a client is equivalent to death wish in selling. It is as if you’re waving your sales opportunity goodbye. Pointing is an aggressive act that can be interpreted as hostility, so throw this gesture out the window if you really want to sell.

15. In sales, here are signs that you are open for negotiations and are willing to compromise. Unbuttoning your jacket means you are ready to talk and to listen to a counter offer. Removing your jacket or rolling your sleeves up is a very good sign for the client, as this means you are ready to decide or to give in to the final price.

Top Grooming Tips for Men

Posted on 02:50 by Unknown
Top Grooming Tips for Men
We live in a time when it pays to look younger, whether it's in the workplace or in the dating world. One of the keys to success is good grooming, experts say.  An increasing number of men are making grooming a priority because they want to maintain a youthful appearance and a winning edge.

1. Move more
Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it’s a stress buster. Think ‘move’ in small increments of time. It doesn’t have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that’s great when you’re up to it. Meanwhile, move more.
Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha .  Then do it.

2. Cut fat
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine. Then be one.

3. Quit smoking
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we have seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Beware. Warn your children of the false romance or “tough guy” stance of Hollywood smokers.
Thought for the day: Give up just one cigarette . The next one.

4. Reduce stress
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e. soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to 10 before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible.
Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds. then float on them.

5. Protect yourself from pollution
If you can’t live in a smog free environment, at least avoid smoke filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is bad. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It’s a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent.
Thought for the day: “Smoke gets in your eyes” . And your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants . Hum the tune daily.

6. Wear your seat belt
Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.

7. Floss your teeth
Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it’s because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don’t?.
Thought for the day: Floss and be your body’s boss.

8. Avoid excessive drinking
While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease; more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

9. Keep a positive mental outlook
There’s a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can’t be unhappy when you’re smiling or singing.

10. Choose your parents well
The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn’t mean you cannot counter act the genetic pool handed you.
Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny.

11. Get rid of the gray hair.
The fastest way to take years off of your look is to get rid of gray hair. It's less noticeable and more natural to begin coloring your hair when you first begin to go gray. An easy-to-use product formulated , can be used at home to cover gray hair with natural looking results.

12. Go short if you’re balding.
Balding is another common problem among men. Opting for a comb-over just dates your look. Get comfortable with your changing look and opt for a modern short haircut. When men begin to lose the hair on their heads, they may begin to notice unwanted hair in other places, like their nose, ears or back. Be sure to trim or wax unwanted hair for a clean,  contemporary look.

13. Protect and pamper your skin.
The best way to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer is to protect your skin from sun damage by using a daily moisturizer with sunscreen.  A good daily skin care routine includes cleansing, followed by a gentle facial exfoliant scrub, which also enhances shaving ease and comfort. Follow with a moisturizer containing sunscreen for day and at night a moisturizer to encourage skin regeneration.

14. Pay attention to hands and feet.
Don’t forget to include your hands and feet in your grooming routine. Well-manicured nails and toes contribute to good hygiene and grooming habits. Make time to clip and file your nails at home.
Foot odor is a common problem among many men, and is relatively easy to treat. Scrub your feet daily and dry them completely. Insert a pair of Odor-Eaters In soles into your shoes, which will absorb wetness and odor.

Quick grooming tips
a. If you don’t iron your clothes, remove them immediately from the dryer so wrinkles don’t set.
b. In hot weather, wear light colored, cotton clothing and socks. This will absorb less heat and “sweat stains” will be less visible.
c. Consider trimming your arm pit hairs in warm weather. Less hairs, less bacteria, less smell.

2. They have white and black fur and oval shaped feet. Snow monkeys have a pink face and it is shaped like a human face. It’s nose is like a human nose. Snow monkeys have brown eyes and pink ears that are shaped like human ears.  They have a fat and oval shaped body and have really short tails. Snow monkeys have black hands that are shaped like human hands. They have skinny arms and they have short legs.

3. Macaques withstand temperatures from about 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 degrees Celsius) in winter to about 73 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius ) in summer. Thick winter fur and stored fat helps keep the primates warm in cooler months.

4. Macaques travel mostly on all four feet, but occasionally they stand and move on just their hind legs.

5. Japanese macaques are one of at least 15 macaque species and over 150 monkey species.

6. Male and female macaques live together in groups ranging from just a few to more than a thousand. The average size is fewer than 200.

7. Grooming is important as a social ritual to Japanese macaques-they spend a good part of each day removing parasites from each other. They rest for at least two to three hours a day.

8. In snowy regions macaques sleep in deciduous trees where snow won't fall on them.

9. Japanese macaques sometimes raid farmers’ crops. One of the macaques goes ahead, usually at dawn, and gives an all-clear symbol to the rest of the troop. A few monkeys act as lookouts for humans while the rest grab the crops.

10. Macaques have a number of vocalizations for different situations: warning, mating, defense, and fighting.

11. Young macaques all play, swinging in trees, fighting over items, and playing with stones. When there is snow on the ground, the monkeys often make snowballs, rolling them until they get too big or break up.

12. Possibly begun in imitation of humans, macaques in Jigokudani, Japan, head to hot springs for bathing and playing.

13. Japanese macaques in the wild eat a broad diet: fruits, seeds, leaves, bark, fungi, bird eggs, snails, crayfish, and fish. They also eat soil, probably to soothe upset stomachs but possibly also for flavor, nutrients, or digestion.

14. Major predators of macaques today are feral dogs and humans.

15. Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, are important in Japanese culture. These “celebrity” animals even draw tourists.

16. Japanese macaques seem to have culture. It usually starts with a “genius monkey,” the Einstein of the troop. When that monkey develops a new behavior that works, other monkeys learn from it and pass it on, sometimes from generation to generation. Among enduring Japanese macaque innovations: cleaning sand from wheat by dipping it in water, keeping warm in hot springs, and making snow balls.

17. Snow monkeys play a special role in mythology, folklore and art in Japan.  Most familiar are the three monkeys which represent the wisdom of Buddha: see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.

18. Both parents and other adults share the role of raising infants.

19. Snow monkeys are Old World monkeys (possess a non-prehensile tail and nostrils closer together).  They are most known for their red, hairless face with low brow ridges.

20. They are the largest of the macaques.

21. One way Japanese macaques deal with the cold is by soaking in 100-degree-Fahrenheit (38-degree-Celsius) volcanic hot springs. Troops that live near hot springs will spend about 30 minutes a day in them. This practice was first seen about 40 years ago in monkeys who had observed humans bathing in the natural hot springs. A monkey reportedly tried it, liked it, and passed on his new habit to her troop.

1. EMERGENCY

The Emergency Number worldwide for mobile phones is 112.  If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and, interestingly, this number 112 can be dialled even if the keypad is locked.  Try it out.

2. HAVE YOU LOCKED YOUR KEYS IN THE CAR?

Does your car have remote keyless entry?  This may come in handy someday.  Good reason to own a mobile phone:  If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.  Hold your mobile phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the spare car key unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end.  Your car will unlock.  This saves someone from having to drive your spare keys to you.  Distance is no object.  You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for
your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

3. HIDDEN BATTERY POWER

Imagine your mobile battery is very low.  To activate, press the keys *3370#, and your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.  This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.

4. HOW TO DISABLE A STOLEN MOBILE PHONE

To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone:  * # 0 6 # (star-hash-zero-six-hash).  A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset.  Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.  If your phone ever gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code.  They will then be able to block your handset, so, even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.  You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either.  If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

5. ATM PIN NUMBER REVERSAL

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM, you can notify the police by entering your PIN number in reverse (for example, if your card’s PIN number is 1234, then you would enter 4321 in the ATM).  The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.  The machine will still give you the money you requested, but, unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location.  This information was recently broadcast by Crime Stoppers, however, it is seldom used, because people just don’t know about it.

Hair Care Tips
DO NOT

1. Do not apply chemicals to your hair without a consultation from a professional stylist.

2. Do not brush, scratch or shampoo hair and scalp before any chemical service.

3. Never apply a relaxer and a tint on the same day or week.

4. Do not re-apply a relaxer before six weeks has elapsed.  Do not re-apply permanent wave before eight to twelve weeks has elapsed.

5. Do not use the so called “no lye relaxer”.   In the long term, they will damage your hair and your child’s hair too!

6. Do not press and curl chemically treated hair.  Stop allowing blow and go salons to use irons on your hair.

7. Never blow dry wet hair.  Towel-dry your hair first.  Apply setting lotion or leave in conditioner.  Then sit under a dryer until all moisture is absorbed.  Allowing hair cuticle to close.  Then you can blow dry your hair on a medium setting.

8. Never use sponge rollers-they will absorb all the moisture and conditioners from your hair.

9. When sleeping do not place rollers where your head will touch the pillow.  Stress caused by the roller will tear and weaken the hair.  Set the top of your head.  Wrap your hair around your head or pin clip your hair.

10. Do not use plastic brushes-natural or boar-bristle brushes are best.

11. Never wear a plastic cap to bed if you have a permanent wave, your scalp and hair will become rancid.

12. Do not wear wool scarves or hats without a silk lining.

13. Do not use tight uncovered rubber bands on your hair.

14. Do not add dead hair, synthetic hair or wool to your hair.  Every head of hair has potential with the right treatment.  Find out what yours is before you do more damage!

15. Do not have a chemical service after the seventh month of pregnancy.

16. Do not use any chemical on your hair before any major surgery.

DO

1. Do have the proper hair analysis to determine the right products for your hair texture.

2. Conditioning is mandatory every time you have a chemical.

3. Allow a six-month interval or three inches of new growth between application of a relaxer and a permanent wave.

4. If your scalp is sensitive to chemical service, apply oil to the scalp.

5. Advise your stylist of any medications you are taking (specifically tranquilizers or diet pills) before a chemical service.

6. Do have your hair shaped or ends trimmed after every chemical service to avoid split ends.

7. Do sleep on a satin pillow case-cotton robs the hair of moisture.  Or wrap your hair in a silk wrap.

8. Do rinse out chlorine and salt water after swimming.

9. Do cover your hair when spending time in the sun.

10. Do shampoo your hair after a workout or strenuous exercise.  The salt from perspiration will erode your hair.  If you work out more than once a week consult your stylist for your particular needs.

11. Do cover your hair when you go in the sauna.  You can leave your hair uncovered in a steam room.

12. Do use conditioning shampoos and creme conditioners on natural hair and very dry hair.

13. Always maintain a balanced diet with exercise for a healthy head of hair.

5 Ways to Reduce Dandruff

5 Ways to Reduce Dandruff

Dandruff is detected by the itchy and flakiness of the scalp. You can always check with your dermatologist to identify the problem and for remedies that help cure it. You may not even have dandruff; your current hair product including shampoo and conditioner could be irritating your scalp. So, try switching your product first to a non-dandruff fighting shampoo and conditioner. See if the flakiness goes away. Stress can be a main cause for dandruff, so make sure that you try relaxing techniques daily to reduce your stress level.

1. Shampoo
Wash your hair with warm to cool water. Try a mild shampoo for a few weeks, and if you do not see any results, use an anti-dandruff shampoo. You should notice improvement in 4-6 weeks. Avoid alcohol based products, or any other styling products until the dandruff subsides. Instead use a leave-in conditioner to maintain shape.

2. Aloe Vera
You need to soothe your scalp because it is red and irritated, so try Aloe Vera. Rub the gel onto the scalp and keep it on overnight. Be sure to replace your pillowcase.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Try pouring two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar onto your scalp, or lemon juice, or even try a mixture of both. Leave it on for as long as you like about 20 minutes to an hour should work and then shampoo.

4. Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is a mild and soothing choice in relieving dandruff. You can chill it and work it through your hair. After a few days the dandruff should be gone.

5. Herbal
You can use various herbs including ginger, rosemary, tea or thyme. You can combine ginger and rosemary with olive oil, separately and rub onto the scalp. Tea can be made and then rubbed into the hair and shampooed. The oil from Thyme is an antiseptic and can be boiled and left on your hair.

You can also try to eliminate dandruff from the inside out. Cut back on junk food, or eliminate it completely from your diet. Try eating yogurt. Also, include more fruits and vegetables and incorporate milk.

If the dandruff problem persists, or any of these remedies make the problem worse discontinue and seek medical attention. You want to be sure it is in fact dandruff you are seeking. If it is another skin condition, it will be treated using different remedies.

Interesting Echidna Facts

Interesting Echidna Facts
What mammal has spines like a hedgehog, a snout like an anteater, and lays leathery eggs like a reptile? The echidna or spiny anteater. Even though it looks like a cross between an anteater and a hedgehog, the echidna isn’t closely related to to either of these animals. Actually, its closest relative is the duck-billed platypus.
The echidna and platypus are the only remaining members of a primitive group of mammals called monotremes. You were probably taught that mammals do not lay eggs because their babies are born alive.  While this is true for most mammals, monotremes are a little different.  Monotremes are the only mammals that lay eggs.
1. The scientific name for an echidna is Tachyglossus aculeatus (which means spiny fast-tongue or spiny anteater).

2. There are two main types of echidna: the short-beaked and the long-beaked.

3. Echidnas are warm-blooded mammals.

4. Echidnas have been known to live for up to fifty years.

5. Each of the echidna’s spines is formed from a single hair.

6. An echidna can lift objects twice its weight.

7. Echidnas drink water and can swim.

8. Echidnas like to bask in the sun like reptiles. They also lay eggs like reptiles. The eggs incubate for 10 days inside the mother’s pouch before hatching.

9. A baby echidna is called a puggle. Puggles are born blind and hairless.

10. Puggles drink milk. Echidna milk is pink because of the high iron content.

11. Ancestors of echidnas roamed the planet with dinosaurs. Dinosaurs died out but monotremes are still alive.

12. Echidnas are active day and night and are mainly solitary animals.

13. Echidnas are strong diggers and they have long, sharp claws. Short-beaked echidnas eat ants and termites. Long-beaked echidnas eat worms and insect larvae.

14. Echidnas have a small mouth and toothless jaw. They have a long, sticky tongue which sticks out from its snout.

15. An anteater may eat up to 30,000 ants in one day

16. Long sticky tongue can be 24 inches in length

17. The tongue can be flicked in and out of the mouth 150-160 times a minute.

18. They don’t have any teeth!

19. They are almost blind, but have an excellent sense of smell - as much as 40 times better than a human.

20. They have the lowest body temperature of any terrestrial mammal, reaching as low as 89.6 degrees (F).  Humans are 98.6.

21. Anteaters sleep for as much as 16 hours a day out in the open with their tail wrapped around them like a blanket

22. Sometimes called an “ant bear” (oso hormiguero in Spanish)

23. They never completely destroy an anthill or termite mound. They leave part of the mound intact so that the ants can rebuild and they can feed there again in the future.

24. Anteaters are well adapted for eating their favorite meal - ANTS.

25. The echidna has hair, but no spines, on its belly, legs and face. However, when it rolls up the spines on its back and sides cover the animal completely.

15 Healthy ways to express and manage anger

15 Healthy ways to express and manage anger
Everyone gets angry sometimes. Anger isn’t “good” or “bad.” You should not feel bad about feeling it. The key is to notice what you are really angry about and then find healthy ways to express it. Understanding your anger and using new ways to deal with problems and stress can make a big difference in your life.

Expressed appropriately, anger is a healthy emotion. However, many people handle anger by either suppressing it too much or expressing it in a hostile manner. If you grew up in a family where it wasn’t “nice” to get angry or where anger was used to control other family members, any sign of antagonism is likely to make you apprehensive. You may fear losing control if you get angry, so it becomes difficult to express anger constructively. This dangerous pattern can lead to such health problems as headaches, hypertension,
gastrointestinal issues, anxiety or depression. Expressing anger explosively is at the opposite end of the spectrum. Blowing up or blaming others is counter-productive in finding a solution to the problem.

1. Talk about how you feel. Say things clearly, calmly, and directly without attacking the other person with words or actions. Talk about how you feel about the situation. Use “I statements,” such as “I feel…” or “I think …” or “I want …” to describe your own reaction rather than blaming the person. It will help them understand what you need from them. People usually respond better when they hear you speak with a calm voice.

2. Name the problem. Explain why you are angry. Don’t yell, use insults, or make threats. If you use “I statements” and remain calm, you may be surprised at the way the other person responds.

3. Listen to the other person. Allow the other person to say what they want and to talk about their feelings and needs.

4. Talk about solutions. Say what you would like to change or what you want to see happen in the future. If you’re having a problem with another person, try to find a solution together.

5. Exercise. Walking, jogging, swimming, or bicycling are good and natural ways to reduce stress and anger. Exercise releases chemicals in the brain that will help you relax. Also, exercise usually takes you away from a stressful situation, gives you time to think, and helps you have more energy.

6. Be good to yourself. Get enough sleep each night and do not use drugs or alcohol to solve your problems. Find healthy ways to manage stress – perhaps watch a favorite movie, read a good book, or take a bubble bath or hot shower.

7. Get help if you need it. Talk with a trusted family member or friend. You may want to see a counselor or other health care professional.

8. Take a “time out.” Although it sounds simplistic, counting to ten or removing yourself from the room goes a long way toward restoring peace. Calm yourself by deep breathing and positive self-statements.

9. Use relaxation techniques. Breathe deeply and rhythmically while relaxing your muscles, one group at a time, and visualizing a pleasant scene.

10. Repeat calming self-statements. Reiterate helpful phrases to yourself such as: “Stay calm,” “I am annoyed, but I can handle this,” or “I do not have to let this bother me.”

11. Get some aerobic exercise. Go for a quick walk or bike ride. Shoot baskets or lift weights.

12. Use humor to release tension. Think of a funny joke or story. Imagine yourself or the person you are angry with in a silly situation.

13. Keep an anger log. Identify the kinds of situations that trigger anger and record your reactions.

14. Talk with a sympathetic friend, spouse, health care provider or therapist. Being able to share your frustrations can help to defuse anger. Actually saying, “I am furious” or “I’m so mad I could…..” will help. Don’t expect your listener to solve the problem, but consider yourself lucky to have someone who lets you vent.

15. Forgive the other person. Recognize that it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you wish. Visualize releasing the anger and feeling calm.

Okapi: Half Giraffe, Half Zebra

Posted on 01:08 by Unknown
Okapi: Half Giraffe, Half Zebra
Okapi is a real African animal that is a cross between a giraffe and a zebra.
Have you ever seen an animal that looked like it was made from parts of two other animals? That’s not as creepy as it sounds! There really is a rainforest animal, known as the okapi (Oh-COP-ee), that looks like it came from two different animals, the giraffe and the zebra.

The okapi resembles a giraffe because he has a long neck and a head shaped like the giraffe’s, with the same large, upright ears. The males even have two small horns in the middle of their foreheads. They have longer front legs than back ones, and both legs move together on each side of the body when they walk, instead of each leg moving separately. Okapis are not as tall as their giraffe cousins, but they can stretch their necks far enough to reach branches 10 feet above the ground.

The okapi’s hindquarters and all four legs have brown and white stripes, much like the zebra. These stripes act as camouflage in the forest, and make the okapis hard to see among all the trees and foliage. This camouflage protects them from the rainforest leopard, their main predator. The rainforest is a beautiful place, but it is also dangerous for the animals that have natural predators living in the same forest, so camouflage is a good thing to have.

Okapi are herbivores, which means they eat plant life, such as tree leaves, buds, grass, ferns, and fruit. (That doesn’t sound as good as pizza and ice cream, does it?) Their tongues are dark purple, 14 to 18 inches long, long enough to clean their eyes and ears! Would you want a tongue that long?.

The only natural habitat in the word for the okapi is the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the Ituri Rainforest in Central Africa. The okapi were not discovered there until the year 1900. While this may seem like a long time ago, it was actually the last large mammal to be discovered. Since then, new animals have been discovered all over the world, but none have been large mammals like the okapi. Even today, many people have never heard of this unusual creature.

Oldest primate-Archicebus achilles

Posted on 23:16 by Unknown
Oldest primate-Archicebus achilles
Chinese Academy of Sciences shows a reconstruction of Archicebus achilles in its natural habitat of trees. One of our earliest primate relatives was a hyperactive wide-eyed creature so small you could fit a few of them in your hand, if they would just stay still long enough, new fossil evidence shows.

An international team of researchers has announced the discovery of the world’s oldest known fossil primate skeleton, an animal that lived about 55 million years ago and was even smaller than today’s smallest primate, the pygmy mouse lemur. The new specimen, named Archicebus achilles, was unearthed from an ancient lake bed in central China’s Hubei Province, near the course of the modern Yangtze River. In addition to being the oldest known example of an early primate skeleton, this almost complete new fossil is crucial for illuminating a pivotal event in primate and human evolution: the divergence between the lineage leading to modern monkeys, apes, and humans (collectively known as anthropoids) and the branch leading to living tarsiers small, nocturnal tree-dwelling primates. The discovery, described today in the journal Nature, also provides evidence that the earliest primates were active during the day, climbed trees, and primarily ate insects.

“Archicebus marks the first time that we have a reasonably complete picture of a primate close to the divergence between tarsiers and anthropoids,” said lead researcher Xijun Ni, a scientist at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History. “It represents a big step forward in our efforts to chart the course of the earliest phases of primate and human evolution.”

The fossil was recovered from sedimentary rock strata that were deposited in an ancient lake roughly 55 million years ago, a time of global greenhouse conditions, when much of the world was shrouded in tropical rainforests and palm trees grew as far north as Alaska. Like most other fossils recovered from ancient lake strata, the skeleton of was found by splitting apart the thin layers of rock containing the fossil. As a result, the skeleton is now preserved in two complementary pieces, each of which contains elements of the actual skeleton as well as impressions of bones from the other side.

Howler Monkey Facts

Howler Monkey Facts
Alouatta caraya
Alouatta is the most widespread New World monkey genus.
1. Howlers Monkeys are a favorite for animals lovers who visit the rainforest.  Their morning calls work as an alarm clock for the natives and can be heard up to three miles away.  Once the howlers start barking, people know it is time to get up.  The males have a specialized vocal chamber that is shaped like a shell.

2. Howlers are the biggest of the new world monkeys.  They have a long, prehensile tail that works like an extra arm when they are swinging around the canopy.  They have wide, side-opening nostrils and no pads on their rump.

3. Male Howler Monkeys are black in color, while the females are brown. The brownish color allows the females to camouflage themselves from predators. The young howler monkeys cling to their mother's stomach for the first few months of their lives and are most vulnerable to predators.

4. Howler Monkey grows to be about 2 feet in length, not including it's 30-inch tail, making it the largest monkey found in the Americas. Howlers weigh about 15 pounds when they reach adulthood. They have a lifespan of about 20 years.

5. Like other herbivorous monkeys, the Howler Monkey eats mostly leaves, fruit and flowers.

6. Compared to other monkeys, Howler Monkeys don't travel very much. They prefer to stay within their small communities. This makes them very susceptible to habitat destruction. The Howler Monkey is an endangered species throughout its entire range.

7. Howler loud noise comes from an extra bone in their throat.  Their barks make them one of the loudest animals in the world.  Aided by an oversized throat and larynx, which acts like a resonance chamber, so the howling can be heard at least 3 miles away.

8. Howler’s howl to let other monkeys in the area know where they are so they don’t have to get into a fight.

9. Leaders will kill the young of other male monkey to stay as the predominant male.

10. Howlers use their tail to move through the trees and while eating.

11. Howlers live in a troop up to 45 monkeys.

12. They have an opposable thumbs and a prehensile tail.  On the underside of the tail there is a naked area with well developed tactile skin which allows them to be sensitive to touch and act in identifying things, much like a 5th hand.

13. They have a prominent muzzle and a greatly enlarged hyoid bone and larynx. The nostrils close together.

14. The males have black hair and the females have yellow-brown to olive colored hair.

15. Adult males will be seen taking care of offspring that are not their own.

16. Young males are not allowed to handle the infants because they are too rough with them and often kill them.

17. They eat only the best parts of the fruit, so seeds may lie on the ground and germinate, therefore helping with seed dispersal.

18. The baby clings to mom’s belly for the first month then switches to her back.

19. The male howler monkey has the loudest call of any primate.

20. They use their tails to extend their reach and they can even hang from a tree by their tail alone.

21. Black howlers are sexually dimorphic in both size and color. Males are black, females are yellow-brown or olive colored.  Infants are blonde.

22.  The hyoid of howlers has air spaces within bones, one of the few cases of this condition outside of dinosaurs. This allows the super loud “howler” vocalization.

23.  While the females of most species of New World monkeys are trichromats, both male and female howler monkeys are, that is they both see in color.
Trichromacy or trichromaticism is the condition of possessing three independent channels for conveying color information, derived from the three different cone types. Organisms with trichromacy are called trichromats. Wikipedia

Fast Facts about Human Genetics

Posted on 06:54 by Unknown
Fast Facts about Human Genetics

1. DNA stands for Deoxy-ribo-Nucleic Acid.

2. On February 28, 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson figured out the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).  That structure, a 'double helix', can "unzip" (separate into two long strands) to make copies of itself.  This discovery confirmed suspicions that DNA carried an organism's hereditary information.

3. DNA molecules are linked, one after another, like pearls on a very long string.

4. DNA molecules are the "software" that direct cellular activity and determine everything about an organism - from what it looks like to how long it is likely to live. Genes are pieces of this DNA, and are the fundamental units of heredity.

5. The complete human genome consists of approximately 3 billion DNA molecules.

6. On average, each chromosome has about 65 million DNA molecules.

7. A gene is a stretch of DNA molecules (ranging in length from thousands to tens of thousands of DNA molecules, in some cases they may be even larger).

8. Between genes, along the length of a chromosome, there may be long stretches of DNA, which have no known function.

9. A chromosome contains about 1000 genes.

10. Humans have approximately 30,000 different genes spread out over the 46 chromosomes.

11. Humans get one complete set of genes from each parent.

12. In April 2003, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) celebrates the completion of the human genome sequence and the 50th anniversary of the description of the DNA double helix.

13. The nucleus, or control centre, of a cell, is where the DNA is coiled up into chromosomes. With the exception of reproductive cells, every cell has 46 chromosomes. Twenty-two pairs of the chromosomes are similar in terms of size, shape and genetic content. The twenty-third pair determines the sex of the individual, and is composed of either two x chromosomes (female) or an x and a y chromosome (male).

14. DNA molecules are incredibly long. If all of the DNA from all of your cells was stretched out into a single thread, it would extend to the moon and back about one million times!

15. It takes about eight hours for one of your cells to completely copy its DNA.

16. The human DNA code is made up of about three thousand million A,T, C, and Gs on each side of the DNA strand.

17. If you were to start reciting the order of the ATCGs in your DNA tomorrow morning, at a rate of 100 each minute, 57 years would pass before you reached the end (provided that you did not stop to eat, drink, sleep, use the bathroom etc.)

18. If you were to stretch out the DNA from those 46 chromosomes in one cell and lay it end to end, it would be over 2 yards in length.

19. If the total DNA in one person were laid in a straight line, it would stretch to the sun and back over 30 times (it’s 93 million miles from here to the sun).

20. You could fit one thousand nuclei across the period at the end of this sentence.

21. You could fit one million threads of DNA across the period at the end of this sentence.

22. Humans are 99.9% genetically identical - only 0.1% of our genetic make-up differs.

23. Information, and yet, all of it is contained inside the microscopic nucleus of a cell so tiny that it could easily fit on the head of a pin!

24. Our genes are remarkably similar to those of other life forms. For example, we share 98% of our genes with chimpanzees, 90% with mice, 85% with zebra fish, 21% with worms, and 7% with a simple bacterium such as E. coli.

25. Less than 2% of the total DNA carries instructions to make proteins. The rest is misleadingly called ‘junk’ DNA, because it is a hodge-podge of sequences that does not seem to code for anything.

Spider Facts

Spider Facts
1.Spiders are not insects because they have eight legs and two body parts, called the abdomen and the thorax. In contrast, insects have three body parts and six legs. ! Spiders belong to a group of animals called “arachnids”.

2. Spiders have 8 eyes and 8 legs.

3. Spiders have no bones.  They have a hard outer shell called an ‘exoskeleton’. Because
it is hard, it can’t grow with the spider. So young spiders need to molt, or shed their exoskeleton. The spider must climb out of the old shell. Can you imagine how hard it must be to pull all those legs out! As adults, they stop growing and do not need to molt.

4. Male spiders are usually smaller than females.

5. All spiders produce silk but not all spiders spin webs. Silk can be sticky, dry or stretchy. Spiders have silk spinning glands, called spinnerets, at the tip of their abdomen. As a rule of thumb: Spiders who make webs will make one new web every night.

6. To molt means to shed their outer shell.

7. The biggest spider is the Tarantula.

8. Spiders recycle their silk, they eat up what isn’t useful anymore.

9. There are more than 30,000 species of spiders, all of which belong to the Arachnid family.

10. Spiders are oviparous, which means that their babies hatch from eggs.

11., All spiders have fangs, which eject venom. Not all spider bites are harmful, even though they can hurt!

12. Spiders eat insects, some of which can be harmful to plants.

13. The venom of the female black widow spider is 15 times stronger than rattlesnake venom.

14. The Brown Widow Spider (Latrodectus geometricus) is not as dangerous as some other widow spiders because the Brown Widow Spider is less likely to bite someone, and injects less poison. Still, it is a venomous creature, and must be treated with respect.

15. Black Widow is considered the most venomous spider in North America.

16. Black Widow spiders are not usually deadly, especially to adults, because they inject only a small amount of venom.

17. Only the female Black Widow is dangerous to humans; males and juveniles are
harmless.

18. The female Black Widow hangs belly upward and rarely leaves the web.

19. The Black Widow is also called the "hourglass" or "shoe-button" spider.

20. Araneae is the Latin word for spider.

21. More than 35,000 spider species of spiders occur in the world. Of these, about 3,400 species in 64 families are found in North America.

Computer Viruses

Posted on 09:15 by Unknown
Computer Viruses

A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes.
Viruses can also replicate themselves.
All computer viruses are manmade.

Types of Computer Viruses
Trojan horse
Worms
Boot virus
Macro virus
Directory virus
Logic bombs
Resident virus

Trojan Horse
A Trojan Horse program has the appearance of having a useful and desired function.
A Trojan Horse neither replicates nor copies itself, but causes damage or compromises the security of the computer.
A Trojan Horse must be sent by someone or carried by another program and may arrive in the form of a joke program or software of some sort.

Computer Worm
A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program.
It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computers on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention.
It does not need to attach itself to an existing program.

Boot Virus
This type of virus affects the boot sector of a floppy or hard disk.
This is a crucial part of a disk, in which information on the disk itself is stored together with a program that makes it possible to boot (start) the computer from the disk.
These are normally spread by floppy disks.

Macro Virus
Macro viruses are viruses that use another application's macro programming language to distribute themselves.
They infect documents such as MS Word or MS Excel and are typically spread to other similar documents.

Directory Virus
Directory viruses change the paths that indicate the location of a file.

Logic Bombs
Their objective is to destroy data on the computer once certain conditions have been met.
These are viruses which are programmed to initiate at a specific date or when a specific event occurs.
Some examples are a virus which deletes your photos on Halloween, or a virus which deletes a database table if a certain employee gets fired.

Resident Virus
This type of virus is a permanent which dwells in the RAM memory.
From there it can overcome and interrupt all of the operations executed by the system: corrupting files and programs that are opened, closed, copied, renamed etc.

How does Computer Virus Spread?
Computer virus is a program that must be triggered or somehow executed before it can infect your computer system and spread to others.
Computer viruses can be spread via:
Network / Internet
Storage media

What do viruses do to computers?
Computer viruses can:
Damage files
Interfere with computer's operation
Viruses can't do any damage to hardware.
Unexplained messages appear on the screen

Keystroke Logging-Key Loggers

Posted on 06:39 by Unknown
Keystroke Logging-Key Loggers
A logfile from a software-based keylogger
Key Loggers, like the name suggests, are programs that record keystrokes from the computer keyboard and either logs it to the computer or sends it to its maker through a built in e-mail engine. Key logging allows a prospective hacker to gain access to the user name, passwords, and even id numbers entered into sensitive online bank accounts or passwords to remote control programs.
You can find the list of latest keyloggers here

http://www.keylogger.org

Use PSMantiKeylogger to check if your computer has any keyloggers installed, you can get it here

http://psmantikeyloger.sourceforge.net/prod03.htm

NextGen AntiKeylogger Free 3.3.0.1
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/NextGen-AntiKeylogger-Free-Download-139613.html

Here are a few other ways to be safe from harmful effects of key loggers

*Monitoring what programs are running

A user should constantly observe the programs which are installed on his or her machine. Also, devices connected to PS/2 and USB ports (which have both been hacked) can be used to secretly install a keylogger and then remove it (along with the user’s data) by the perpetrator.

* Anti-spyware

Anti-spyware applications are able to detect many keyloggers and cleanse them. Responsible vendors of monitoring software support detection by anti-spyware programs, thus preventing abuse of the software.

* Firewall

Enabling a firewall does not stop keyloggers per se, but can possibly prevent transmission of the logged material over the net if properly configured.

* Network monitors

Network monitors (also known as reverse-firewalls) can be used to alert the user whenever an application attempts to make a network connection. This gives the user the chance to prevent the keylogger from “phoning home” with his or her typed information.

* Anti-keylogging software

Keylogger detection software is also available. Some of this type of software use “signatures” from a list of all known keyloggers. The PC’s legitimate users can then periodically run a scan from this list, and the software looks for the items from the list on the hard-drive. One drawback of this approach is that it only protects from keyloggers on the signature-based list, with the PC remaining vulnerable to other keyloggers.

Other detection software doesn’t use a signature list, but instead analyzes the working methods of many modules in the PC, allowing it to block the work of many different types of keylogger. One drawback of this approach is that it can also block legitimate, non-keylogging software. Some heuristics-based anti-keyloggers have the option to unblock known good software, but this can cause difficulties for inexperienced users.

* One-time passwords (OTP)

Using one-time passwords is completely keylogger-safe because the recorded password is always invalidated right after it’s used. This solution is useful if you are often using public computers where you can’t verify what is running on them. One-time passwords also prevents replay attacks where an attacker uses the old information to impersonate. One example is online banking where one-time passwords are implemented and prevents the account from keylogging attacks as well as replay attacks.

* Automatic form filler programs

Automatic form-filling programs can prevent keylogging entirely by not using the keyboard at all. Form fillers are primarily designed for web browsers to fill in checkout pages and log users into their accounts. Once the user’s account and credit card information has been entered into the program, it will be automatically entered into forms without ever using the keyboard or clipboard, thereby reducing the possibility that private data is being recorded. (Someone with access to browser internals and/or memory can often still get to this information; if SSL is not used, network sniffers and proxy tools can easily be used to obtain private information too.)

It is important to generate passwords in a fashion that is invisible to keyloggers and screenshot utilities. Using a browser integrated form filler and password generator that does not just pop up a password on the screen is therefore key. Programs that do this can generate and fill passwords without ever using the keyboard or clipboard.

* Drag & Drop

Most keyloggers cannot intercept texts which are drag & dropped from one window to another. With the help of this technique, sensitive data could be transferred, for example, from a password manager to the target application.

* Non-technological methods

Most keyloggers can be fooled by alternating between typing the login credentials and typing characters somewhere else in the focus window. Similarly, one can move their cursor using the mouse during typing, causing the logged keystrokes to be in the wrong order. One can also use context menus to remove, copy, cut and paste parts of the typed text without using the keyboard.

Another very similar technique utilizes the fact that any selected text portion is replaced by the next key typed. E.g. if the password is “secret”, one could type “s”, then some dummy keys “asdfsd”. Then these dummies could be selected with mouse, and next character from the password “e” is typed, which replaces the dummies “asdfsd”.

Shutdown Command Via Command Prompt

Posted on 05:43 by Unknown
Shutdown Command Via Command Prompt

The 'Shutdown' Command Becomes More Flexible and Automated when used from the Command Prompt.

To Run the 'Shutdown' command from the command prompt, go to 'Start > Run', type 'cmd', and press 'Enter'.
In the black box (the command prompt) type 'Shutdown' and the Switches you want to use with the 'Shutdown' command.
You have to use at least one switch for the shutdown command to work.

The Switches :-
The 'Shutdown' command has a few options called Switches. You can always see them by typing 'shutdown -?' in the command prompt if you forget any of them.

-i: Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l: Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s: Shutdown the computer
-r: Shutdown and restart the computer
-a: Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername: Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx: Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c “comment”: Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f: Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy: The reason code for the shutdown u is the user code p is a planned shutdown code xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256) yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)

Note :- I’ve noticed using a switch with a '-' sign doesn’t work sometimes.
If you are having trouble try using a '/' in place of '-' in your switches.

Examples :-
shutdown –m \\computername –r –f
This command will restart the computer named computername and force any programs that might still be running to stop.

shutdown –m \\computername –r –f –c “I’m restarting your computer. Please save your work now.” –t 120
This command will restart the computer named computername, force any programs that might still be running to stop, give to user on that computer a message, and countdown 120 seconds before it restarts.

shutdown –m \\computername –a
This command will abort a previous shutdown command that is in progress.

Using A Batch File :-
You can create a file that performs the shutdown command on many computers at one time.

In this example I’m going to create a batch file that will use the shutdown command to shut down 3 computers on my home network before I go to bed.

Open 'Notepad' and type the shutdown command to shut down a computer for each computer on the network.
Make sure each shutdown command is on its own line.
An example of what should be typed in notepad is given below-

shutdown –m \\computer1 –s
shutdown –m \\computer2 –s
shutdown –m \\computer3 -s

Now I’ll save it as a batch file by going to file, save as, change save as type to all files, give the file a name ending with '.bat'. I named mine 'shutdown.bat'.
Pick the location to save the batch file in and save it.

When you run the batch file it’ll shutdown computer 1, 2, and 3 for you.

You can use any combination of shutdown commands in a batch file.

Pop A Banner Each Time Windows Boots

Posted on 22:51 by Unknown
Pop A Banner Each Time Windows Boots

Pop a banner which can contain any message you want to display just before a user is going to log on.

Go to the key :- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon
Now create a new string Value in the right pane named 'LegalNoticeCaption' and enter the value that you want to see in the MenuBar.

Now create yet another new string value and name it:
'LegalNoticeText'.
Modify it and insert the message you want to display each time Windows boots.

This can be effectively used to display the company's private policy each time the user logs on to his NT box.

It's '.reg' file would be:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "LegalNoticeCaption"="Caption here."
