Upgrading to a SmartPhone

Posted on 10:38 by Unknown
Upgrading to a SmartPhone

Many users have been abandoning older model phones in favor of these new and powerful devices, especially in the business world. Smartphones are a great way to keep your e-mail and contacts with you on the go instead of carrying around a laptop or other device. If you're thinking about upgrading to a smartphone, consider a few things:

1.  Cost:
Of course, there is the cost for the new phone plus any upgrade fees. But you may not know that smartphones also require a data plan at an additional cost. This is what allows your phone to connect to the internet and e-mail. Without it, your smartphone won't be as useful out of range of a wifi network. Also, some providers require the purchase of a data plan if you have a smartphone. Check with your carrier to learn about their requirements.

2.  Features:
Most smartphones come with all sorts of great tools such as GPS, e-mail, internet, and wifi capabilities. If you only make phone calls from your phone, consider if you will take full advantage of the new technology at your disposal or if you only want a device to place calls.

3.  Keyboard:
It can be difficult to adjust to a new style of keyboard. The iPhone has a virtual keyboard, meaning you must use the keyboard on the touchscreen to input your information. The BlackBerry and some Android phones have a physical keyboard, which may be preferable. Try before you buy!

4.  Brand:
There are quite a few different types of smartphones on the market. The iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Windows phones are the big names in personal smartphones. Make sure to take a look at the features of each device. The iPhone's user friendly nature may be well suited to somebody new to the technology whereas other users might prefer an Android phone which has more advanced and customizable
features.

Android Tips

Posted on 08:32 by Unknown
Android Tips
These tips are mostly for the 2.1 version of Android, which is by far the most common form of the OS out there today - but much of the advice will also work on older and newer versions and those boutique varieties skinned by some hardware makers.
1. Activate the Android Power Strip
The single most important feature in Android 2.1 is its built-in power strip widget. Here, you're able to quickly disconnect all the phone's battery-destroying features, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the Great Batter Killer that is GPS. Long-press on the screen and install it via the widgets category.

2. Android call screening
If you're a paranoid call-screener, Android is there for you. Open up the Contacts listing of the person you're currently avoiding, then select Menu > Options. From here you're able to ping all incoming calls from this person directly to voicemail. Give people the brush off with Android.

3. Set up custom caller ringtones
Alternatively, if you like talking to people, the same screen lets you allocate a specific custom ringtone to each caller stored in your Contacts directory.

4. Add your alarm clock to your task killer
A classic mistake, this. We're constantly being told of the (debatable) importance of using a task manager to maximise Android battery life, and if you want to go down that route you're welcome. However, when killing all your tasks to save battery life, remember that your alarm clock is a task in itself - kill that and you'll wake up in a panic at 10.15am tomorrow morning.

5. Organise things into folders
While Steve Jobs may have recently made quite a big deal about letting iOS users organise things into folders, Android's been doing that for ages. Fancy a quick Home screen shortcut to your starred favourite contacts? Long-press the Home screen and make it so.

6. Rename Android folders
And, once you've done that, to customise things to perfection it's possible to rename folders. Simply open the folder, then long-press on its name in the top bar to bring up the Top Secret renaming field.

7. Check the date
Possibly one of the tiniest undocumented features is the date-checking facility. Press the Notification bar at the top left of the screen. It tells you what the date is. Go on, try it. It will.

8. Mount your SD card
Also accessed via the Notifications field is the "Mount" option. Many an Android newcomer has failed at this hurdle, as mounting your phone's SD card is an awkward step that needs to be taken before it'll appear as an external drive for data copying. Plug it in, mount it, then copy.

9. Multiple Gmail accounts in Android
Android 2.1 added support for multiple Gmail accounts. Add a new internet identity to your phone by opening the Gmail app, then pressing Menu > Accounts > Add Accounts. Then remember who you're pretending to be.

10. Set up your keyboard launch shortcuts
One of the reasons many people still love their QWERTY keyboards is Google's inclusion of the reliable old keyboard shortcut system in Android. The phone has a completely customisable collection of app launcher shortcuts, which are found under Settings > Applications > Quick Launch.

11. Download more Android live wallpapers
One thing that makes Android 2.1 a little more swish and exciting than the rather dull earlier versions is its support for Live Wallpapers - the animating image format that brings your Home screen to life. There's a negligible battery life hit for doing so, but in return you get a phone that looks cool. Which is what life's all about, right? Search the Android Market for Live Wallpaper there are loads.

12. Easy zoom
A teeny little feature, this, but one that's super-useful if you're using all five of your Home screens - or a custom user interface that offers even more. Tapping the dots beside the dock at the bottom of the screen brings up a mini thumbnail list of all Home screens, allowing you to get from Screen 1 to Screen 5 without
wearing a groove into your screen surface.

13. Add a Navigation shortcut to Android
Android 2.1 lets users set up local short-cuts to the Maps Navigation satnav app. As long as you have one of the latest Google Maps updates, you're able to select one of your Navigation routes and attach it directly to a shortcut on the Home screen - creating a one-press launcher for your favourite trips.

14. Set your double-tap zoom level
On phones that don't support multi-touch zooming, you can take more control of your web browsing zoom via the browser's setting page. Change your view to "Close" if you want the page to fly right into extreme close up when you double-tap the screen, or leave it to "Far" if you're happy to have text only cropping in a little closer when you double-tap.

15. Change Android browser font size
From the same menu you're also able to select your browser font size. Your personal ideal settings will vary depending on your screen size, resolution and eye sight, but a few minutes getting it set up so pages are instantly readable will save many cumulative hours of resizing over the coming years.

16. Search web pages
Menu > More > Find on Page lets you search for specific text terms on web pages, if you can't be bothered reading the thing properly as the author intended.

17. Practise your robot voice
Android 2.1 features voice-input for every text field. Which is nice, although the delay for "processing" - and often rather left field results - mean it's usually quicker to just bite the bullet and type things. Remember to say "comma" to tell it to insert a comma. Full stop.

18. Add words to the Android dictionary
This is such a useful feature it ought to be screamed about via a sticker on the phone when you take it out of the box. If you've been labouring through life with a difficult-to-spell surname, type it once into your Android phone's text field - then long-press on it in the suggested word field. This adds it to the dictionary, so you'll never have to type more than the first couple of characters of your stupid name again.

19. Sign up for a Picasa account
Google's online image-sharing tool may have failed to capture the public's imagination in the same way as Flickr, but there's one good reason to register yourself one - Android 2.1's 3D gallery can auto-sync your photos with your Picasa account. Photo sharing works both ways, so you'll have to deactivate sync if you don't want your entire web gallery popping up on your phone.

20. Download web images
If you've seen one of those funny photographs on the internet, long-pressing on it lets you download it to your phone - and it'll pop up in your Gallery for easy sharing.

21. Manage your Android call log
It's very easy to delete individual items from Android's log of made and received calls -simply long-press on an item and delete it. Then sleep easier.

22. Facebook your Contact photos
If you combine Android with the official Facebook Android app, it's possible to automatically pull in photos for your contacts through Facebook. You're also able to create a specific Facebook Phonebook folder on the Home page, keeping internet and proper friends separate.

23. Browser combo button
The Android 2.1 web browser features a clever multi-function button beside the address bar. While a page is loading it turns into a "X" to cancel loading, but once a page has finished it transforms itself into a bookmark adding and history management tool. It's always there for you.

24. Android web history shortcut
Also, further speed up browsing by holding down the Back key - this is your shortcut to your internet History. Ideal for navigating those complex browsing sessions - and also cuts down on unnecessary reloading.

25. Use browser tabs
The standard Android browser offers tabbed browsing, it just doesn't do a very good job of advertising it. Long-pressing a URL lets you open web links in a new tab - you then switch tabs by pressing Menu and selecting the Windows option. Not that user-friendly a system, but it works. Just remember that quitting to the desktop may automatically close everything in the middle of a tab-heavy session.

Is Your Mobile Original?

Posted on 06:21 by Unknown
Is Your Mobile Original?

Now-a-days, a consumer has to take care of a lot of things while buying a new mobile phone. Everyone owning a mobile phone might be in doubt whether their mobile phone is original or not, in the wake of many of the past issues in which fake mobile phones were a topic of discussion. Hence, it would be really useful if a person could have an easy way of knowing whether the mobile phone owned by him or her is original or not.It was then that I came across an easy way to identify the genuinity of mobile phones. And so, I am sharing it with you here.

1. Type *#06# in your mobile phone. After you enter the last hash (#), the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number (a unique 15-digit number) of your mobile phone will appear on the screen.

2. The next step is to note the 7th and 8th digits of your mobile phone's IMEI number.

3. If the 7th and 8th numbers together read 02 or 20, it means that it was manufactured in the Emirates, and hence is of very bad quality!

4. If the 7th and 8th numbers together read 08 or 80, it means that it was manufactured in Germany, and hence is not so bad!

5. If the 7th and 8th numbers together read 01 or 10, it means that it was manufactured in Finland, which means that the mobile is of somewhat good quality!

6. If the 7th and 8th numbers together read 00, it means that it was manufactured in the original factory, which has the best quality!

7. If the 7th and 8th numbers together read 13, it means that it was manufactured in Azerbaijan, which means that the mobile is of very bad quality and hence is very dangerous for health!

Desk Top Safari
By Mike Whiteside

It truly is a very fascinating idea, combining the quirky characteristics of animals with the bored and motivational lacking office worker. Despite being trapped behind their desk, now they can swim in the ocean , soar through the sky, leap across lily pads, or even (if you have an IPad) hang upside down like a bat.

Gun-Toting Animals

Gun-Toting Animals
Tempering the violence of modern weaponry with charmingly rendered creatures, artist Xiau-Fong Wee captures a dark humor in her quirky drawings. While some of the weapons appear terrifyingly realistic, others such as in the ray gun wielding bunny portrait, speaks more to the fantastical worlds of science fiction. The anthropomorphic dispositions of the spectacle-wearing creatures also range in merry reverie to stern seriousness, adding to the delightful nature of these well-executed portraits. Customize UAC in Windows 8

Windows 8 User Account Control displays less warning than UAC in Vista, and lets you customize UAC according to your need and preference between security and a less annoying desktop experience. UAC prompts in Windows 8 are not as much as in Windows 7 as very few programs require elevation, and Administrator can adjust these UAC prompts.

Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change User Account Control Settings.
Here you can select when to notify or bring the UAC prompt. There are 4 levels of security which includes:
1. Always Notify
2. Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer
3. Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop)
4. Never Notify
Select them according to your balance between security and desktop experience and adjust the level of UAC prompt. Any change to the level of the UAC will prompt for confirmation.

FUN FACTS ABOUT GARLIC

Posted on 03:42 by Unknown
FUN FACTS ABOUT GARLIC
Garlic (Allium sativum) is commonly used as a flavoring for food, as a condiment, and for medicinal purposes.  The milder-flavored elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum) is actually a leek that produces large cloves.

Garlic is a bulb and a type of herb. It is made up of a number of segments called cloves. It has a very distinct strong smell and is used a lot in cooking. Garlic is a member of the ‘onion family’ (known as Alliums), which includes onions, leeks, chives, spring onions and shallots. The English word garlic originates from the Middle Ages, gar= spear, leac = pot herb.

Its Latin name is Allium sativum.
Allium = Latin for garlic,
Sativum = cultivated / farmed.

The potency of garlic has been acknowledged for more than 500 years. In the ancient times, garlic was used as a remedy for intestinal disorders, flatulence, worms, respiratory   infections, skin diseases, wounds, symptoms of aging, and many other ailments. Through the middle ages into World War II, the use of garlic to treat wounds surfaced repeatedly. It was ground up or sliced and was applied directly to wounds to inhibit the spread of infections.

Throughout history, people worldwide the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Indians, Koreans, Romans, Babylonians, and Vikings have used allium vegetables to enhance health:

The Codex Ebers, an ancient Egyptian medical papyrus, lists 22 therapeutic formulas in which garlic was used to treat heart problems, headache, bites, worms, and tumors.

In Greece, Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, recommended garlic for its medicinal effects, and athletes ingested garlic as a stimulant during the first Olympic games.

In India, garlic was used as both an Ayurvedic heart remedy and an antiseptic lotion.

The French fed garlic and onions to horses suffering from painful blood clots in the legs. In the Middle Ages it was thought that garlic helped to prevent the plague. In France, thieves in Marseille invented a potion containing garlic called ‘Vinegar of the Four Thieves’. It was said to be so effective that they could rob the houses of those suffering with the plague with no risk of getting the disease themselves!

Eastern and Western cultures alike have used garlic and onion to free the respiratory tract of phlegm, rid the bowels of parasites, and aid digestion.

Several North American Indian tribes used garlic and onions to relieve the pain of insect stings and prevent or cure scurvy.

1. Reduction of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer A stimulation of immune function.
2. Enhanced foreign compound detoxification.
3. Radioprotection .
4. Restoration of physical strength.

If you split a garlic bulb then you will reveal the individual cloves inside. If you peel one of these you’ll instantly get the unique smell of garlic.

Garlic’s strong flavour means that it is used a lot in cooking, particularly in European and Asian dishes.

Garlic can be eaten raw, where it has a very strong flavour, but most often it is cooked to make it less strong and more appetizing. It can make your breath smell after eating it, but chewing parsley or a clove is said to get rid of the odour. It is a good source of vitamin C and can help to ward off colds.

Onion Facts

Posted on 08:54 by Unknown
Onion Facts
1. Everybody who has ever had to cut up a lot of strong onions knows what happens. It is literally a job that makes all of us cry. That is because onions contain sulfur, and when youcut the onion sulfur is released into the air. This airborne sulfur reacts with the moisture in your eyes and creates a mild form of sulfuric acid! Your eyes tear up to flush this substance from your eyes.

2. Native Americans ate wild onions and the Pilgrims brought onions with them on the Mayflower. Onions were eaten at the first Thanksgiving dinner.

3. After slicing onions, wash your hands in cold water, then rub them with salt or vinegar. The salt or vinegar will remove onion smells from your hands.

4. If you need only half of an onion, use the top half. The root will stay fresh longer in the refrigerator. Our word "onion” comes from the Latin "unio" meaning one or unity, because an onion grows as a single bulb.

5. In ancient Egypt, the onion was a symbol of eternity because it is a circle-within-a-circle. The Pharaoh Cheops paid workers who built the Great Pyramid in onions, garlic, and parsley and onions were painted on the walls of the pyramids. Mummies were even buried with onions.

6. Onions are a good source of Vitamin C and fiber. They are low in fat and calories. The antioxidants found in onions help prevent high blood pressure and some forms of cancer.

7. Onions are a popular vegetable. Worldwide we grow about 50 million tons of onions a year! The average person eats about 13.7 pounds of onions a year. In the United States we chomp down about 18.6 pounds each per year, while in Libya, the average person eats 66.8 pounds of onions in a year!

8. Acne treatment. This one is rich: those magical onion enzymes are also effective for “removing acne,” simply mix crushed onion slices with water and apply this mixture to your face. If your face is made of metal, it should also give you a nice polish. Perhaps a pair of goggles would be a good idea in this case, since I don’t think that a slice of bread is going to do you much good.

9. Onions can be grown in three ways: Bulbs, transplants, or from seeds.

10. Onions are ranked 6th among the world’s leading vegetable crops. Onions provide not only flavor but also health-promoting phytochemicals and nutrients. Select onions that feel dry and solid, with no soft spots or sprouts. Store onions in a cool, dry space away from bright light.

11. Onions can be grown in three ways: Bulbs, transplants, or from seeds.

12. The white onion bulb and the green stalk are both edible.

13.  Humans have been cultivating onions since 3500 B.C.

14. Green onions are also known as scallions.

15. The three colors of onions sold in most grocery stores are Yellow, red, and white.

Almonds

Almonds
Almonds can benefit the body in so many ways that it’s hard to believe such a small nut can pack this much punch. There are many different reasons why almonds are such a powerful food; probably the best way to explain this is by taking a look at all of the nutrients, healing properties, and of course, the best way to eat them.

The extensive nutrients contained in almonds include, among others, vitamin E, vitamin B2, protein, magnesium and potassium. Additionally, almonds are high in dietary fiber and monounsaturated fat, also known as the “good fat”, which is found in olive oil.

With respect to heart disease, the healing properties of almonds pack a one, two punch. For example, the monounsaturated fats, when ingested, help lower LDL cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Studies have proven that eating almonds over a period of only two weeks can have a positive impact on LDL levels. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, helps lower cholesterol and magnesium reduces stress on veins and arteries by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain and throughout the body.

For optimal cellular health vitamin B2 is essential. Your body has a high amount of oxygen-containing molecules that are used to produce energy. Sometimes, these molecules can be reactive and cause damage to the mitochondria; however, this can be prevented with a protein molecule called glutathione, which vitamin B2 allows being recycled within the body. Essentially, without vitamin B2 the glutathione would not be able to recycle itself and defend your mitochondria against danger.

Beyond heart and cellular health almonds possess an array of healing properties that help promote weight loss and colon health as well as protecting you from anemia. Did you know that a quarter of a cup of almonds contains over 4 g of fiber – a whopping 16% of the daily requirement? Or, that eating almonds are a great alternative to red meat for getting your daily dose of protein? Healthy cooking ideas for almonds are far from traditional. You can of course eat them as is, in fact, many health experts recommend eating the skin of an almond to get the maximum benefit. However, there are more creative ways to get your daily almond fix – for example:

1. Add fresh almonds to a salmon salad in addition to lemon juice and capers
2. If you don’t eat fish, try almonds with some yogurt for a tasty treat
3.For a twist on a holiday favorite try adding almonds to cranberry sauce for a wonderful taste
4. Almond shavings can also be added to a variety of main dishes including roasted chicken with mango for an island flavor.
Can you think of a better tasting way to stay healthy? Make almonds part of your daily life and your body will reap the rewards!

DNA Facts

DNA Facts
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, has been described as the very “stuff of life.”  The central importance of DNA is that it is the genetic material the substance that carries the information determining the properties of the organism.  DNA is the master plan or program that specifies all the proteins that will be synthesized in an organism.

1. DNA is found inside every cell in our body (apart from red blood cells).

2. Each cell contains roughly 2 metres of DNA.

3. Humans have roughly 100,000,000,000,000 (100 trillion cells). If you unravelled all of your DNA from all of your cells and laid out the DNA end to end, the strand would stretch from the Earth to the Sun hundreds of times (the sun is approximately 98 million miles away from Earth).

4. You could fit 25,000 strands of DNA side by side in the width of a single adult hair.

5. The DNA is tightly coiled up and structured into 46 chromosomes.

6. Our chromosomes are arranged in pairs. We inherit one copy of the pair from our Mum and one from our Dad.

7. When chromosomes are stained they can be quite easily recognised by their distinctive stripy patterns. This is used to check whether people have the right number of chromosomes and check for any rearrangements.

8. There are approximately 3 billion (3,000,000,000) chemical letters (otherwise known as bases) in the DNA code in every cell in your body.

9. This is a massive amount of information. It would fill 200 yellow pages in small type font.

10. If you tried typing the whole genetic code out (typing at 200 letters per minute) it would take 29 years (without taking any breaks!).

11. The DNA is made up of 4 building blocks (an alphabet of 4 letters spelling out the instructions to help us grow, develop and function).

12. The four letters in the DNA alphabet - A, C, G and T - are used to carry the instructions for making all organisms. The sequence of these letters holds the code - just like the order of letters that makes words mean something. Each set of three letters corresponds to a single amino acid.

13 . Sections of DNA that code for proteins are called genes. The complete set of genetic information for an organism is called the genome. The latest estimate is that there are between 20,000 and 25,000 genes in the human genome.

14. We share a lot of DNA with other animals, plants and microorganisms.

Raccoon Facts
COMMON NAMES (English only)
Raccoon
Common Raccoon
Northern Raccoon
Coon

1. This cat-sized omnivore, mostly nocturnal carnivore, with its black and white face, can live in almost all terrestrial habitats. It has a distinct sense of touch and an excellent climbing and swimming ability.

2. One of the most easily recognized furbearers, the medium-sized raccoon is distinguished by a black mask across the eyes and cheeks and black rings around the bushy tail. Long, thick fur gives raccoons a typical gray brown color, with variations ranging from sienna to silver.

3. Raccoons are nocturnal animals that love to live near a good source of food.

4. Raccoons are excellent scavengers- they will raid garbage cans, dumpsters, pet food left out overnight, and even come into a house through a pet door.

5. Remove a source of food and a raccoon will eventually leave for better food availability.

6. A raccoon will bite a pet if cornered or it feels threatened but prefers to run away from danger.

7. A raccoon might bite a human if: 1. it is rabid (intentional) or 2. it has been handfed and is seeking a handout (accidental).

8. Raccoons can carry rabies and is one of the most common carriers of this disease.

9. You are millions of times more likely to be bitten by your pet dog, (3 million dog bites in the U.S. every year) than by any wildlife, including raccoons, coyotes, foxes, bears, cougars, etc,.

10. In a rural setting, there are approximately 5 raccoons per square mile. In urban settings, that number increases to 25 per square mile. The reason…available food.

11. Raccoons are most closely related to the weasel (Mustelidae) and bear (Ursidae) families. They have keen senses of hearing, sight, and touch, but taste and smell are less well developed.

12. The front and hind paws of raccoons have 5 digits each. The dexterous front paws enable the raccoon to grasp and manipulate food items. Raccoons are excellent climbers, and can descend a tree head first.

13. Raccoons are primarily crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) and nocturnal (active at night). They occasionally venture out in the daytime, but that does not mean that they are diseased. Raccoons often adjust their feeding schedules, especially in spring when rearing their young. They may "den up" during the coldest periods in late fall and winter; however, this is not true hibernation, and the animals will wander out during
warm spells.

14. Other diseases, such as canine distemper, can cause neurological symptoms similar to rabies. Distemper is a common disease that is usually fatal.

15. Raccoons are primary carriers of round worm, which is shed in raccoon feces. The roundworm rarely causes problems for raccoons, but it can be dangerous to other mammals, including humans.

16. Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system.  The virus is present in the saliva and nervous tissue of a rabid animal.

17. Rabies is most often seen among wild mammals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes.

18. Cats, dogs, ferrets and livestock can also get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them.  Deer and large rodents, such as woodchucks, have been found rabid in areas affected by raccoon rabies.

19. Some animals almost never get rabies.  These include wild rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, rats, mice, guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters.  They can get rabies, but it almost never happens.

20. There are other animals that never ever get rabies.  They are birds, snakes, fish, turtles, lizards and insects.

The Great Kapok Tree

Posted on 20:05 by Unknown
The Great Kapok Tree
A giant in the rainforests, the kapok tree can reach up to 200 feet in height, sometimes growing as much as 13 feet per year.

The kapok tree is found throughout the Neotropics, from southern Mexico to the southern

Amazon and even to parts of West Africa.

Because the unopened fruit won't sink when submerged in water, many believe the fruit of the kapok tree floated its way from Latin America to Africa.

The trunk can expand to 9 or 10 feet in diameter.

In the nooks and grooves of this huge plant live a diverse number of  species including frogs, birds and bromeliads.

The white and pink flowers of the kapok tree emit a foul odor that attracts bats.

The kapok tree does a great job at spreading its seeds, producing anywhere between 500 and 4,000 fruits at one time, with each fruit containing 200 seeds. When these fruit burst open, silky fibers spread the many seeds all over the forest.

The white and pink flowers of the kapok tree emit a foul odor that attracts bats.

The trunk can expand to 9 or 10 feet in diameter.

The majestic kapok tree has many uses for humans. Its wood is lightweight and porous; good for making carvings, coffins and dugout canoes

The silky fibers that disperse the seeds are too small for weaving but make great stuffing for bedding and life preservers.

Soaps can be made from the oils in the seeds.

Other parts of the giant tree are used as medicines.

A young man is hired to cut down a Kapok Tree that is part of a large ecosystem of animals and people. As he naps on the job, several animals and a young boy visit him and whisper in his ear the significance the tree has in their lives. After hearing testimony after testimony the young man realizes that cutting down one tree can make a significant impact on the environment. Upon waking the man decides not to cut down the tree.

35 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep

Posted on 10:31 by Unknown
35 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep
Source:  http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.en
Quality sleep is vital for the mind and body. It is even key to managing - another common diabetes-related issue. The less you sleep, the more tempting it is to eat the comfort foods that poorly help you compensate for that lack of rest and necessary energy.
Sleep plays a critical role in immune function, metabolism, memory/attention span, learning, and other important mind and body functions. It also impacts a person's weight, lowers incidents of depression, and it is one easy way to get stress relief.

1. Try to go to bed at the same time every evening and get up at the same time every morning. This will help your body to work out a healthy sleep routine.

2. A person should only stay in bed equal to the number of hours of sleep they are achieving per night (for example, if you are getting six hours of sleep per night you should plan bedtime and wake time as six hours apart).  Many insomniacs spend far too much time in bed, attempting to "squeeze" out a few more minutes of sleep.

3. If you have difficulty getting to sleep within 20 minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing and distracting.  For many people this is reading.  Do not do housework, bills, work, or anything that is too stimulating within two hours of bedtime or during a nighttime awakening.

4. Although some people's insomnia is helped by a nap at midday, for most, it will interfere with falling asleep that night.

5. Avoid alcohol within five hours of bedtime.  Alcohol is a poor hypnotic and causes nighttime awakenings.

6. Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate) after noon.  Even if it doesn't prevent you from falling asleep, it can cause shallow sleep or nighttime awakenings.

7. Avoid going to bed on either an empty stomach or a full stomach.  A light snack may be of value.

8. Bedrooms should be quiet, safe, and relaxing.  Clocks should face away from the bed, so as not to "count down" the minutes until morning.

9. Daily exercise will improve insomnia, although the effects may not be immediate.

10. Schedule "worry time" earlier in the day, so as to consider the day's problems and find some resolution before getting into bed.

11. Most adults need about 8 hours sleep every night.
Some require more and some less. Many poor sleepers spend much more than 8 hours in bed and this makes fragmented sleep a habit. Except if you have lengthy sleep requirements, limit your time in bed to no more than 8.5 hours. If you often take hours to fall asleep,go to bed later. Remember that children need more sleep than adults.

12. Bed is for sleeping, not entertainment
Television, computers and other distractions can interfere with your sleep. It is better not to sleep with your TV on. Your mind needs to be in the habit of knowing that if you are in bed, you are there to sleep. Don’t stay in bed if you are wide awake.

13. Make sure your bedroom is comfortable You should have a quiet, dark room with comfortable bedding and good temperature control.

14. Avoid daytime naps
Sleeping during the day will make it much more difficult to sleep well at night. If a nap is absolutely necessary, for example because of a late night, then limit this to about thirty minutes. Make sure that you are awake for at least 4 hours before going back to bed.

15. Don’t lie awake watching the clock
Watching the time on a clock just makes you anxious about not being asleep. If possible take the clock out of your bedroom. If you need the clock for the alarm, turn it around so that you cannot see the time.

16. Avoid sleeping pills except in exceptional circumstances They do not fix the cause of your sleeping problem.

17. You may need professional help
If you are still having trouble sleeping, if you have persistent problems with mood, restlessness in bed, severe snoring or waking up unrefreshed despite what should be adequate length sleep, make sure that you go and see your doctor

18. Exercise - Twenty to thirty minutes of exercise every day can help you sleep, but be sure to exercise in the morning or afternoon.

19. Have a hot bath or shower - Helps bring on sleep because it can relax tense muscles.

20. Read a fiction book - It takes you to a whole new world if you really get into it. And then take some time to ponder over the book as you fall asleep.

21. Cool down your room - Most people sleep better in cooler weather, so make sure that you have your bedroom set to the proper temperature.  You shouldn’t be too cold or too hot.

22. Sleep in silence - Avoiding distractions will allow you to feel more restful and to fall to sleep

23. Quieten a racing mind before bedtime.

24. Getting more emotional support may help.

25. Quit smoking.
Besides all the usual benefits of quitting smoking, nicotine is a stimulant and it can take hours for the effects of a stimulant to wear off.

26. Make your bedroom your oasis.
Your bedroom should be a sleep-friendly environment.

  • Clean
  • Dark as possible (a sleep mask can works wonders)
  • Comfortable mattress and pillows
  • No technological distractions, if possible
  • And while you are at it ...

27. Set your thermostat.
Once you are asleep, it is difficult for your body to regulate its own temperature, so make sure you are comfortable beforehand.

28. Drink a warm beverage before bedtime.  Chamomile and Valerian Root Tea are calming.  As an alternative, a natural sleep remedy is a glass of warm milk with some nutmeg and honey.

29. Create a comfortable and quiet environment for sleep.  Make sure your pillow, mattress and sheets are comfortable and support the creation of a nurturing environment.

30. When you are ready to fall asleep simply close your eyes and “observe your body”.  Wherever you feel tension you can consciously relax that area.  Then gently observe the in-flow and out-flow of your breath until you fall asleep.

31. Some foods can help, though. Milk contains tryptophan, which is a sleep-promoting substance. Other foods that may help promote sleep include tuna, halibut, pumpkin, artichokes, avocados, almonds, eggs, bok choy, peaches, walnuts, apricots, oats, asparagus, potatoes, buckwheat, and bananas.

32.  Keep pets off the bed. Does your pet sleep with you? This, too, may cause you to awaken during the night, either from allergies or pet movements. Fido and Fluffy might be better off on the floor than on your sheets.

15 Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is experienced by nearly million adults all over the world. Often accompanied by excess weight, high blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, and the leading killer heart disease. If you are someone who has high blood pressure, the mainstream medical industry wants nothing more than your eternal business, buying their pharmaceutical drugs that never really cure anything. But instead of doing that, try utilizing one of these natural solutions.

1. Drink Coconut Water to Combat High Blood Pressure
Coconut water is a tasty and nutritious beverage which has also been shown to be effective at lowering blood pressure. In one study where authors investigated the effects of coconut water when regularly consumed, they found that coconut water was able to significantly lower blood pressure in 71 percent of the study participants. This refreshing beverage has also been shown to rise above sports drinks in hydration while causing not nearly as many stomach pains.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Effectively helping thousands of health ailments such as  strep throat  and  acid reflux, apple cider vinegar is also a fantastic solution for high blood pressure. Just a few tablespoons a day for one month could have a dramatic impact. I have seen people’s blood pressure go from 150/80 to 130/80 in just a month while taking 2 tablespoons of ACV a day. Many others have experienced the same scenario, and blood pressure medications are often chucked. It could help you too.

3. Vitamin D
Research  points out that  vitamin D  can be an effective solution to  lower blood pressure, promote vascular health by helping blood vessels, and contribute to healthy arteries. While helping to lower blood pressure, this powerful cancer fighter can also protect you from the flu 800% better than any flu vaccine.

4. Aloe Vera, Hibiscus Tea, Cayenne Pepper
Aloe, cayenne pepper, honey, and tea are all fabulous for helping with a whole host of health problems. They are often used in combination to treat anything from strep throat to lowering insulin levels to boosting overall health. Not surprisingly, some individuals have also found this combination to effectively lower blood pressure.

5. Lifestyle
In addition to all of these solutions, living an overall healthy lifestyle with some exercise will also help greatly. This means avoiding fructose, which has been shown to up the risk of having blood pressure levels of  160/100 mm Hg by 77 percent  with the consumption of 74 grams (2.5 sugary drinks).

6. Fiber Rich Diet
Having a diet that has a huge amount of fiber has been proven to be successful in preventing and treating many different cardiovascular diseases such as Hypertension. However, the effect of different dietary fibre varies. Water soluble gel-forming fibers have the best result in lowering high blood pressure.

7. Sugar Low Diet
The common sugar that we use for cooking increases our blood pressure. This common sugar is called sucrose. The actual mechanism to how sucrose does this is still not fully understood.

8. Instead, people should switch to a diet that is high in potassium (vegetables and fruits) and essential fatty acids. Seven grams of potassium should be ingested daily. The diet should be low in salt, sugar and saturated fat. On the whole, diets should have a big component of vegetables and members of the onion/garlic family.

9. Vegetarian Diet
People who follow a vegetarian diet tend to have both a lower level of blood pressure and lower occurrences of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. There vegetarian diet can be a diet that can control blood pressure. Therefore researchers have a hypotesis that it could be that a vegetarian diet contains a greater amount of complex carbohydrates, potassium, vitamin A, polyunsaturated fat, vitamin C, fiber, calcium and magnesium; all of them might have a positive impact on high blood pressure.

10. Low Sodium Level Diet
The key for Hypertension patients to note is that they must avoid foods that have high levels of salt and sodium. People who were not able to get high blood pressure medication in the past resorted to consume a very low salt-reduced, low-calorie "rice diet." Apparently, people were able to lower their blood pressure significantly just by avoiding salt. If you have Hypertension, you must avoid foods that contain huge amount of salt or are highly processed. Examples of such food include fast food, frozen pizza and preserved vegetables.

11. Lose Weight:
Hypertension diets are commonly used to lower high blood pressure. Foods enriched in nutrients, mainly calcium, potassium, magnesium, protein and fiber are recommended to lower it. Decreasing salt and sodium enhanced foods are typically included in all hypertension diets. The key to hypertension diets are foods low fat foods and lean meats, to stop additional weight gain and/or lose extra pounds, and eating grains, vegetables, fruits, and proteins to obtain the proper minerals and nutrients needed in one's daily diet.

12. Cut Back Alcohol:
Save some money at the bar! Decrease the amount of alcoholic beverages consumed daily, if a typical night out consists of 3 drinks, cut it in half, save some money, and naturally lower blood pressure. A healthy amount of alcohol varies based on medical conditions, but a healthy male should consume no more than two drinks per day (24 oz of beer, 10 oz of wine, 3 oz of heavier liquor) a healthy female should cut the male's intake in half.

13. Limit Caffeine:
Make a half of pot of coffee in the morning. Caffeine can raise blood pressure by tightening blood vessels and restricting blood flow to the body. If a typical coffee drinker drinks 2-4 cups per day, cut that amount in half or switch to a decaffeinated brand. Sodas and teas with high levels of caffeine have the same affect on the body. Caffeine also effects people's way of dealing with stress.

14. Reduce Stress:
Take a deep breath, relax, and shrug off what a happened during the rush hour traffic drive home. Learning to deal with stress and maintaining a way to deal with it is important to lower blood pressure naturally. People are put in stressful situations daily, learning how to respond and react to them is important in keeping a clear mind as well as a healthy blood pressure.

15. Start An Exercise Plan:
Exercise is important in everyone's life, more so in a person's life with hypertension. Lowering body fat and increasing blood circulation is critical in lowering blood pressure. This does not mean one needs to get a gym membership, but it does mean there should be some sort of daily physical activity in one's life that they follow and continue until it is back to normal ranges (as told by a doctor, not your own monitor).
Try the above tips and  control high blood pressure.
